Exclusive: Amazon’s MGM division is in final negotiations to acquire worldwide rights to the Night of the Living Dead sequel that Nikyatu Jusu (Nanny) is directing for Village Roadshow Pictures, Vertigo Entertainment, Westbrook, Origin Story and the late George A. Romero’s Sanibel Films.
While specifics as to the financials haven’t been disclosed, we understand that the deal has emerged from a highly competitive situation. The Walking Dead‘s Latoya Morgan scripted the film we were first to report on, which will be released by MGM theatrically.

Writer/director Nikyatu Jusu’s feature directorial debut Nanny, the first horror film to win the U.S. Grand Jury Prize for drama at the Sundance Film Festival, will be receiving a theatrical release on November 23rd, then will reach Amazon Prime Video on December 16th. With her movie about it makes its way out into the world, Jusu is now focusing on her next projects – and we know she has at least two more horror movies in development. Last month, it was announced that Jusu will be directing a sequel to George A. Romero‘s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead (a sequel that is being produced by Romero’s ex-wife Christine Romero), and now Deadline has confirmed that Jusu is working on a vampire movie for Jordan Peele’s production company Monkeypaw Productions. While we wait for Nanny to debut on Amazon Prime Video on December 16 – it’s first coming to select theaters on November 23 – director Nikyatu Jusu has set up her next project.
Deadline reports that Jusu will be directing a feature length adaptation of her vampire short film Suicide By Sunlight for Jordan Peele‘s company, Monkeypaw Productions.
“My project with Monkeypaw is an expansion of a short film I made called Suicide by Sunlight,” Jusu says, “about day-walking Black vampires who are protected from the sun by their melanin.”
Deadline also notes, “… the original piece, set in a near-future New York City, more specifically tells the story of Valentina (Natalie Paul), who finds it difficult to suppress her bloodlust when a new woman is introduced to her estranged twin daughters.”
Jusu is writing the feature film screenplay with Fredrica Bailey.
Suicide By Sunlight is part of Monkeypaw’s overall deal with Universal Pictures.

Jennifer Hudson, Milla Jovovich, Quvenzhané Wallis and Common are set to star in Stefon Bristol’s new action-thriller “Breathe.”
Capstone Global will introduce the project to buyers at the Marché du Film in Cannes next week. CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group helped to arrange financing for the film and will co-represent the U.S. rights, alongside Capstone.
In “Breathe,” after Earth is left uninhabitable due to lack of oxygen, a mother Maya (Hudson) and her daughter Zora (Wallis) are forced to live underground, with short trips to the surface only made possible by a state-of-the-art oxygen suit made by Maya’s husband, Darius, whom she presumes to be dead. When a mysterious couple arrives claiming to know Darius and his fate, Maya tentatively agrees to let them into their bunker, but are they all they appear to be?
“Avatar” star Sam Worthington is also in talks to join the cast.

As you’re reading this, the 35th Independent Spirit Awards are being held. Oscar will have their say tomorrow evening, but today, it’s the indie films getting their turn! Will this awards show honor the likes of The Farewell, The Lighthouse, Marriage Story, or Uncut Gems? Maybe some combination of them all? We’ll know in a few hours, that’s for sure. What this space for the Spirit Award results once the show is over. A number of deserving movies and performances are about to have one last moment in the sun, before the Academy Awards suck up the last bit of awards season oxygen. If nothing else, it’s a fun, more casual moment, before the pomp and circumstance of the Oscars… Leading the way was Uncut Gems, which took home Best Actor for Adam Sandler, Best Director for Josh Safdieand Benny Safdie, Best Editing for Ronald Bronstein and Benny Safdie.

This year, the Independent Spirit Awards are really indie. A24 dominates the field with 18 Spirit Award nominations over five films. Of that group, only “The Lighthouse” scored an Oscar nod, for Best Cinematography.
That means several high-profile contenders who did not land Oscar nominations will get strong Spirit sympathy votes. “The Lighthouse” and “Uncut Gems” have five nominations each, so Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe, and Adam Sandler are strong acting contenders. In the Supporting Female race, there’s no way Jennifer Lopez doesn’t win the Spirit for Oscar-snubbed “Hustlers,” fresh from her Super Bowl triumph.
“Uncut Gems” goes up against Netflix’s Best Picture Oscar nominee “Marriage Story” for Best Feature, which is already taking home the Robert Altman Ensemble Award for Noah Baumbach’s high-wattage cast. That’s why the movie has only three nomination, and could lose Best Feature to the Safdie brothers’ popular thriller.

The nominations for the 35th Independent Spirit Awards have been announced, and it was a big morning for “The Lighthouse” and “Uncut Gems.” The annual indie awards ceremony is presented by Film Independent and takes place the day before the Academy Awards on the beach in Santa Monica, California. The Spirit Awards have become known over the last decade for showcasing nominees that are a mix of underdog films and higher-profile awards contenders.
It’s important to note the Indie Spirit Awards has a budget ceiling of $22.5 million, meaning any movie made for more than this amount is ineligible for nominations. For this reason, Martin Scorsese’s Netflix-backed “The Irishman” was not eligible for 2020 nominations (the film had a budget north of $150 million). Netflix’s other top Oscar contender, Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” is eligible for Spirit Awards and landed a Best Feature nomination. As has become common over the last several years,...

See You Yesterday, directed by Stefon Bristol, follows two ambitious technologically and scientific prodigal teenagers C.J. Walker and Sebastian Thomas – played by Eden Duncan-Smith and Danté Crichlow respectively – who manage to create a time machine years after theorising such a scientific achievement. However, what soon starts as smooth sailing slowly broadens out into a dangerous game of trying to alter the past, resulting in damaging consequences that will change the lives of the two and all around them forever.

Netflix’s “See You Yesterday” combines the time-travel goofiness of “Back to the Future” with the social criticism of “Boys N the Hood.” It’s the subject of our latest “Low Key” podcast, which you can listen to right here.
Does “See You Yesterday” work? We’re a little divided. We appreciate that the protagonist is a young, black and female scientist (played by Eden-Duncan Smith). And we love seeing Marty McFly himself, Michael J. Fox, reading Octavia E. Butler’s time-travel classic “Kindred.” We also think the message of the movie is pretty brilliant.
But the question is how well the film melds silliness with seriousness. It starts like a Brooklyn-based “Back to the Future,” melding a late ’80s and early ’90s sensibility with the present day. But then a shooting that is all-too-familiar across every era takes the narrative in a serious direction, and the much-discussed conclusion — if...

Like Spike Lee, Stefon Bristol grew up in Brooklyn and went to Morehouse College. Bristol dreamed of breaking into film and getting a chance to work with Lee, his hero. At three different Q&A sessions, Bristol approached Lee pleading for a chance. That went nowhere, but when Bristol entered the NYU graduate film program, Lee became Bristol’s professor. But the experience wasn’t exactly what he expected.
“Spike called [my short] trash and he called it unoriginal, because it was a hood film,” said Bristol in an interview with IndieWire. The short was about a character trying to get his best friend to rob a bodega to help his father get rid of his debt. Lee’s criticism hit Bristol hard, mostly because he saw the truth in what he was being told. It was also a turning point that culminated with his feature debut, the Netflix-produced time travel comedy “See You Yesterday.

Stefon Bristol’s debut feature “See You Yesterday,” which has Spike Lee as one of its producers, revolves around the ingenuity of two 16-year-old friends, Claudette and Sebastian (Dante Crichlow), who are working on a homemade time machine in Sebastian’s garage. The effects in this movie are as charmingly lo-fi as the backpack modules that they wear to travel back in time for 10-minute intervals.
“See You Yesterday” nods to some of its 1980s forebears by having Michael J. Fox turn up as one of their teachers at the Bronx High School of Science. Claudette is reading Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time” in his class, while Fox has his nose buried in Octavia Butler’s “Kindred,” a popular time travel novel from 1979. When Claudette tells Fox’s Mr. Lockhart about her time-travel backpack project, which she hopes will get her into MIT, Bristol keeps his camera...

The script was co-written by Bristol and Fredrica Bailey. It’s based on their 2017 short film of the same title, which was a finalist at the HBO Short Film Competition at American Black Film Festival and is currently on the Cinemax streaming platform, Max Go.
Starring Eden-Duncan Smith (Roxanne Roxanne) and newcomer Danté Crichlow, the film centers on two Brooklyn teenage science prodigies, Claudette “C.J.” Walker and Sebastian J. Thomas, who build make-shift time machines to save C.J.’s brother, Calvin, from being wrongfully killed by a police officer

Principal photography has completed on Netflix’s upcoming film “See You Yesterday,” a time-travel film written and directed by newcomer filmmaker Stefon Bristol and produced by Spike Lee through his 40 Acres and a Mule production banner.
Netflix plans to release the film in 2019.
Based on Bristol’s NYU thesis short film, which was also produced by Lee and streamed on HBO last year, “See You Yesterday” follows C.J. and Sebastian (Eden-Duncan Smith and Dante Crichlow), two African-American prodigies who build a time machine in the hopes of using it to save C.J.’s brother from being wrongfully killed by a cop.

The Fire This Time 10 Minute Play Festival 2017 Directed by Cezar Williams Presented by Frigid New York @ Horse Trade at the Kraine Theater, NYC January 19-February 5, 2017
The annual The Fire This Time Festival was begun by artists, for artists, and its purpose is to showcase early-career playwrights of the African diaspora. Traditionally, The Fire This Time has been composed of a variety of events, with the 10 Minute Play Festival serving as the flagship, and this year, its eighth, Tftt has expanded those events beyond the strictly theatrical, including web series and readings by playwrights and sisters Kia and Kara Lee Corthron from their respective debut novels. As an anchor to the festivities (and the only event that isn't free to attend), the The 10 Minute Play Festival has consistently put forth collections of strong, exciting work, and this year's group of seven short plays, performed by a group of seven actors, is no exception.
