Ken Jennings is usually lenient when it comes to his role as Jeopardy! host, but he isn’t afraid to get mean and throw some shade when the situation calls for it. On the latest episode of the Inside Jeopardy! podcast, hosts Sarah Whitcomb Foss and Buzzy Cohen played a clip from an off-air segment where a member of the studio audience asked Jennings what happens when a contestant doesn’t answer in the form of a question. “Oh, boy. Do you know what hanging, drawing, and quartering is?” Jennings quipped. The host went on to say that he gets progressively meaner throughout the episode if a contestant continues to mess up that key Jeopardy! rule. He explained, “The rules are actually different in the first and second rounds. In the first round, I get to remind them very sternly. I say, ‘Yes, but please remember your phrases.'” “In the second round,...

Former Jeopardy champ Brad Rutter is spilling some trade secrets about the long-running game show.
During an interview with Tyler Boronski, the past champion opened up about what you need to win the show, and you may be surprised that it all comes down to just mastering three categories.
Keep reading to find out more…
Which three categories? Presidents, World Capitals and Shakespeare.
“There is a lot of stuff that comes up all the time… there are some things you can memorize and be pretty confident that at least one of them is going to come up in some way. And that is Presidents, World Capitals, and Shakespeare,” he said.
Brad says that knowing all the U.S. Presidents by number in order, every capital on the planet, and trying to get a basic knowledge of all the Shakespeare play titles with characters will give you a “big advantage going in.

Jeopardy! has been in tournament mode for what feels like forever, but there is great news for fans waiting on the return of regular games with brand-new contestants. On the latest episode of the Inside Jeopardy! podcast, long-time producer Sarah Whitcomb Foss was joined by her regular co-host and former Tournament of Champions winner Buzzy Cohen, where she confirmed regular Jeopardy! will be back next week. “The finals of the [Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament] will kick off on Friday (April 5), and, as a reminder to our listeners, it is the first player to win two games who will be our champion. So this could run as little as two games and as many as four.” She continued, “Which means next week, no matter what, we will be back to regular Jeopardy! I know people are excited.” “We’re gonna welcome back, you might not remember him [because] it was so long ago, our 3-game champion,...

After Mayim Bialik‘s surprising exit as Jeopardy! host in December, it seemed like Ken Jennings would take on the regular syndicated show and the tournaments all on his own. However, that isn’t quite the case. Former champion and Inside Jeopardy! podcast co-host Buzzy Cohen has stepped in to lighten the load, hosting two play-in games for the currently airing Champions Wildcard tournament, which features brief winners from Season 39 plus the recent Second Chance winners. However, in a Jeopardy! first, Cohen’s episodes are audio-only and are available via TuneIn Radio. If you’re wondering why these episodes aren’t included in the televised broadcasts, well, there is a logical reason, as a user on the Jeopardy! Reddit forum explained. “There are more 1- and 2-day champs from Season 39 than there are spaces in the two 27-player [Wildcard] tournament brackets, so they had nine champs play in audio-only play-in games on TuneIn Radio,...

When Jeopardy! returned for its Second Chance and Champions Wildcard tournaments back in September, it came with a new rule, which sees contestants required to read out the entire category name each time they select a new clue. However, this new rule might not stick around much longer, as many viewers have complained that it disrupts the flow of the show, especially when the category names are a mouthful, like last Thursday’s (December 7) “During Lou Gehrig’s Consecutive Game Streak.” Jeopardy‘s long-time producer Sarah Whitcomb Foss and former Tournament of Champions winner Buzzy Cohen addressed the backlash on the latest Inside Jeopardy! podcast, with Foss explaining why they introduced the rule change in the first place. “We’ve seen the chatter online about contestants reading the full category, which is a change to the rules this season,” Cohen brought up, though Foss disagreed with the term “rule.” “Not really a rule,...

It’s coming up on three years since the legendary Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek lost his battle with pancreatic cancer, and his family and former co-workers have been sharing their memories of the beloved host in those final weeks. The most recent episode of the This is Jeopardy! podcast, hosted by former contestant Buzzy Cohen, took a look back at the week Trebek announced his cancer diagnosis and the difficult months that followed. Longtime supervising producer Lisa Broffman opened up about the moment she first heard about Trebek’s diagnosis, saying she was in the office with fellow producers Rocky Schmidt and Harry Friedman. “Alex called, and Rocky put him on speaker phone, and Alex told us that he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer, and I remember Harry had a stack of papers on his lap, and he picked them up and threw them on the ground,” she said, holding back tears.

Jeopardy! viewers had plenty to say about recent champion Jake DeArruda, both positive and negative, but now the show’s producers have shared their thoughts on the polarizing contestant. Ken joked in a post-game chat he’s got t-shirts older than Jake. [He] was inspired by Matt Jackson, who was another very strong champion back when he was 23 and just mowed down the competition.” She then asked...

The 250,000 prize wasn’t the only thing Jeopardy! super-champ Amy Schneider won after coming out on top of the 2022 Tournament of Champions, as she also received a unique gift from last year’s Toc winner. Taking to Twitter, Schneider revealed that after she’d finished taping the Toc final, the 2021 champion, Sam Kavanaugh, approached her “holding a box.” She continued, “I had no idea what he was giving me, although I should have! See, apparently Buzzy Cohen felt that the ToC winner should have a championship belt…” “So, [Cohen] gave one to James [Holzhauer], James had given one to Sam, and now Sam was giving one to me! Now that I know I think it’s a nice tradition. But now I guess at some point I’ll have to figure out how one makes a customized championship belt!” she added alongside a photo of her pro-wrestling-style Jeopardy! belt. So, he gave one to James,...

Jeopardy‘s executive producer Mike Davies has responded to criticism over a new format change he’s considering for the long-running game show. Last month, Davies brought up the idea of offering cash bonuses to contestants who correctly answer an entire column of clues under one topic without bouncing around the board. Some fans, including former Tournament of Champions winner Buzzy Cohen, worried that this new rule might have a negative impact on the gameplay. Davies touched on these concerns on Monday’s (October 3) Inside Jeopardy! podcast, where he spoke with fellow Jeopardy! producer and former Clue Crew member Sarah Foss. While the new rule is something Davies is seriously mulling over, he stated that it hadn’t yet been implemented, so people don’t need to be worried. “A lot of response, we should say, to my, let’s say, positing the not yet reined-in idea that I floated.

Jeopardy!‘s executive producer Mike Davies is toying with an interesting format change to help shake up the long-running game show, but not everybody is on board with the idea. Speaking on the Inside Jeopardy! podcast on Monday, September 19, Davies brought up the concept of offering cash bonuses to contestants who correctly answer an entire column of clues under one topic. The producer, who took over from the ousted Mike Richards in 2021, first touched on the idea last week but went into more detail on this week’s podcast. “I have been thinking about trying out, perhaps in one of our other tournaments this season, experimenting with giving out a cash bonus for contestants who run a category,” Davies said in conversation on the podcast with show producer Sarah Foss and Jeopardy! alum Buzzy Cohen. “It’s a moment in the studio; it’s a great thing.” Cohen, however, seemed apprehensive,...

Jeopardy! will be introducing some format changes for its upcoming 2022 Tournament of Champions, including byes to the semi-finals for three of its most winningest contestants. The new details were revealed during the third episode of the Inside Jeopardy! podcast, where executive producer Michael Davies and producer Sarah Foss were joined by 2017 Tournament of Champions winner Buzzy Cohen, who hosted last year’s Tournament of Champions competition. During the episode, Davies and Foss unveiled the line-up for the upcoming champions tournament and explained some of the new formatting, which includes byes to the semi-finals for Amy Schneider, who won 40 games in January, Matt Amodio, who won 38 games when Season 38 began in September 2021, and Mattea Roach, who won 23 games in May. These three players will proceed automatically to the semi-final round, meaning they do not have to play in the quarter-final rounds. Davies explained that this is to make the contest fairer,...

It's hard to believe that the Jeopardy! has yet to name a permanent host.
Following Alex Trebek's death in 2020, the series employed temporary hosts as questions mounted about who would become the face of the series long-term.
Executive Producer Mike Richards was named permanent host a year ago, only to depart shortly after following unearthed anti-Semitic, misogynistic, and racist jokes came to the forefront.
During the Daytime Emmys, fellow EP Mike Davies spoke to press and said that "we hope to have a hosting announcement very, very soon," according to Variety.
“But with all of our plans for Jeopardy! — which is more Jeopardy!, not less, more versions — we’re going to need multiple hosts to represent the entire audience,” Davies added, “to represent the entire country, in order to take this franchise forward.”

Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik have been sharing Jeopardy! hosting duties for the better part of a year now. But a permanent Jeopardy! host announcement could be coming soon. At the Daytime Emmys on Friday, June 24, executive producer Michael Davies said the shows hopes to announce the permanent host “very, very soon,” adding that more versions of the beloved game show are on the horizon. Speaking backstage, Davies teased that there could be not just one new host, but several. “We hope to have a hosting announcement very, very soon,” he said. “But with all of our plans for Jeopardy! — which is more Jeopardy!, not less, more versions — we’re going to need multiple hosts to represent the entire audience, to represent the entire country, in order to take this franchise forward.” Just last week, rumors circulated that Buzzy Cohen might be getting a permanent position on the show when...

A number of “Jeopardy!” fans on Twitter are convinced that former Tournament of Champions winner Buzzy Cohen may be making a return as host of the show for its upcoming “Celebrity Jeopardy!” edition.
Last week, the game show fan account BuzzerBlog tweeted “100 prepared to be wrong but still not totally believing that the Mayim-hosts-primetime-Jeopardy thing is still here. The Chase is changing things up in Season 3 with the addition of new Chasers, among which are Jeopardy!‘s former Tournament of Champions winner and guest host, Buzzy Cohen. He’ll be joined by fellow newbie Chasers Victoria Groce and Brandon Blackwell. Meanwhile, Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer are sticking around and making way for an interesting dynamic as ABC‘s interpretation of The Chase ups its Chaser count by one. So, what’s ahead for this new combination of brilliant minds? We have an exclusive first look with a sneak peek promo, above, along with some teases from Cohen himself. “There’s definitely a tonal shift,” he acknowledges of the latest panel of Chasers. Jeopardy! continues its alternating of hosting duties between interim guest Ken Jennings and primetime host Mayim Bialik. And while this dynamic has been successful for the most part, more so than the parade of guest hosts who fronted the game show stage in 2021, there’s one big question that still remains: Who is going to be the permanent host? Since longtime host and fan-favorite Alex Trebek died in late 2020, the question has lingered and was almost answered when former executive producer Mike Richards was initially given the gig, but it didn’t last long. Richards exited the show after previous comments he made on a podcast came under scrutiny. And while Bialik was given the primetime gig back then, she’s been yo-yo-ing with Jennings as syndicated host for this past season. Last year, along with Jennings, Bialik, and Richards, Katie Couric, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Aaron Rodgers, Anderson Cooper, Bill Whitaker,...

ABC has finally settled on Mayim Bialik and longtime champ Ken Jennings as hosts of “Jeopardy!” through the end of 2021. Bialik will take on hosting duties for the first few weeks beginning September 20 and running through November 5. Then, she and Jennings will trade off on emceeing the show as their schedules permit. “Jeopardy!” just hasn’t been the same since Alex Trebek’s final episodes — and neither have its ratings.
Ok, so that’s a little unfair. The “Jeopardy!” ratings were of course boosted by interest in seeing Trebek off. And they stayed high due to the intrigue of seeing someone other than Trebek — initially, legendary champion Ken Jennings — host the popular quiz program.
While the Nielsen numbers for the Sony Television game show have since tapered off a bit from there, “Jeopardy!” has still topped all other syndicated series most weeks since Trebek’s final bow.
TheWrap has ranked all the “Jeopardy!” guest hosts by their average rating. This, too, is a bit unfair, as the highest ratings of 2021 were all pretty frontloaded for the first guys. Again, that’s just the nature of public fascination after Trebek iconically hosted the show for 36 years.

The search for a successor to late “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek has been a rocky one, culminating August 20 in executive producer Mike Richards’ resignation from the post.
