Newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson is a hardcore Christian nationalist who has a history of spouting extreme right-wing views — including on mass shootings. The Louisiana Republican’s record on guns has come under scrutiny in the wake of a shooter killing at least 18 people in Maine on Wednesday, and in addition to opposing gun control legislation, the man who is now second in line for the presidency has blamed mass shootings on both teaching evolution and abortion.

‘Ruth: Justice Ginsberg In Her Own Words’ Review: The Starz Doc Works, So Long as You Don’t Know Rbg
It’s been a little less than six months since Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died at the age of 87. Before her death, Ginsburg’s vocal dissents on the Supreme Court and her status as one of the longest serving female justices gave her a certain cache. Art and pop culture came to immortalize the “notorious Rbg.” In 2018, the documentary riffing off that designation, simply titled “Rbg,” secured two Oscar nominations for its look at Ginsburg’s life and career. It was then followed by Mimi Leder’s scripted biopic, “On the Basis of Sex.”
Ginsburg’s death rocked an already bleak 2020, and as the government slowly starts to come out of things, complete with a new President and a predominately conservative Supreme Court, audiences are getting a new documentary: Freida Lee Mock’s “Ruth: Justice Ginsburg in Her Own Words.” Premiering on Starz, the film’s premise is...

Few types of films are more awkward to sit through than listless and unremarkable biographical documentaries that fall short of their inspiring subjects. Touring the film festival circuit since 2019 and finally available to the general public via virtual cinemas, Freida Lee Mock’s “Ruth – Justice Ginsburg in Her Own Words” unfortunately yields one such bumpy viewing experience.
On one hand, it is tough not to adore the central figure of “Ruth,” the legendary and influential Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away last September and has been a lifelong, passionate teacher and practitioner of law, fighting against various forms of unconstitutional discrimination in the U.S. On the other, it’s curiously difficult to stay engaged with Mock’s film that merely puts forth a paint-by-numbers assembly of the wealth of material it has at its disposal.

Irin Carmon has become CNN’s newest contributor. Carmon, a senior correspondent at New York Magazine, helped write the Washington Post investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against Charlie Rose last November and is a leading writer on gender and legal issues.
She is perhaps most famous for co-authoring the book “Notorious Rbg” — an homage to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
The news was not formally announced by the network, but was revealed in CNN anchor Brian Stelter’s Tuesday evening newsletter.
“Officially CNN’s newest contributor,” Stelter called her, pointing to a Tuesday morning appearance by Carmon on “New Day” where also referred to her as “contributor.”

Thanks to the unpredictable whims of the internet, there’s no telling where the next pop-cultural obsession will come from. In recent years, medieval portraiture, a tragic trip to the zoo (Rip Harambe), the rat-and pizza-slice-infested subways of NYC, and the celebratory queering of a horror character meant to symbolize grief and extreme parental resentment have all served as unlikely Twitter sensations.
In that context, the Supreme Court doesn’t seem too far-fetched as the source of enduring virality.
Arriving months before an awards-season biopic about the jurist starring Felicity Jones, the new documentary “Rbg” attempts to humanize the woman behind the “Notorious R.B.G.” meme but ends up mostly printing the legend instead.
Directed by Julie Cohen (“The Sturgeon Queens”) and TV producer Betsy West, “Rbg” is a proficient but prosaic overview of Ginsburg’s (exceptional) life and (world-improving) accomplishments. If you know enough to be impressed by...

The Mirror Awards, handed out today by the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, honored journalistic work including investigations by the New York Times, New Yorker and Washington Post that focused on Harvey Weinstein and Charlie Rose.
The lunchtime awards gala at New York’s Cipriani 42nd Street, which also featured special honors for National Public Radio, HBO’s Sheila Nevins and 60 Minutes, put a spotlight on the still-evolving arena of the #MeToo movement. Media companies are grappling with overhauling the cultures of their companies even while covering the industry’s errant ways.
One award recipient in particular gave a speech that drew some cheers and sustained murmurs throughout the cavernous, 98-year-old former Bowery Bank building. Irin Carmon, a Washington Post writer who was cited along with Amy Brittain for Best Story on Sexual Misconduct in the Media Industry, aimed to put the events of 2017 and 2018 in a broader context.

It’s only fitting that Sundance Film Festival darling “Rbg,” which hits theaters May 4 via Magnolia Pictures, was put together by female filmmakers stretching across multiple generations. Directed by Julie Cohen and Betsy West, the documentary chronicles the life and career of octogenarian Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a driving force for equal rights in America.
“When you have this many women working together, there’s a certain type of trust and respect for each other, especially with this kind of subject matter,” says editor Carla Gutierrez, who sifted through hundreds of hours of archival footage and new material shot by cinematographer Claudia Raschke to shape the narrative. There’s a caseload of fascinating facts about the justice, from her undergrad days at Cornell, to her time at law school where she made the Harvard Law Review, to President Carter appointing her to the U.S. Court of Appeals...

Mayim Bialik has been accused of victim blaming for an op-ed she penned about the allegations of sexual misconduct against Harvey Weinstein.
In the New York Times article titled “Being a Feminist in Harvey Weinstein’s World,” the Big Bang Theory star wrote that she has “experienced the upside of not being a ‘perfect 10.’ ”
“As a proud feminist with little desire to diet, get plastic surgery or hire a personal trainer, I have almost no personal experience with men asking me to meetings in their hotel rooms,” Bialik said. “Those of us in Hollywood who don’t represent an impossible...

Paris Hilton is dialing back her defense of Donald Trump after being criticized over her remarks on social media. In a interview with Marie Claire's Irin Carmon, carried out in Mexico last November after the 2016 U.S. election and published in the magazine's September 2017 issue, the heiress says women who alleged that the president sexually assaulted them "are just trying to get attention and get fame." About a dozen women have accused Trump of making unwanted sexual advances towards them. He has denied the allegations and has not been charged with a crime. Following an online backlash, Hilton, a family friend of Trumps, told Us Weekly in comments posted...

An attorney helping an anonymous California woman accusing Donald Trump in a federal lawsuit of raping her in the ’90s when she was 13 announced that the woman would go public for the first time Wednesday.
But as the press conference was about to begin in the California offices of attorney Lisa Bloom, Bloom called it off, citing threats to the plaintiff, known in court papers as Jane Doe.
“Jane Doe has received numerous threats today … She has decided she is too afraid to show her face,” Bloom said, according to the tweets of MSNBC/NBC reporter Irin Carmon. “We’re going to have to reschedule.

After a tough year for his network, MSNBC President Phil Griffin urged staff to look at 2014 as a learning period for the network that will help it going forward.
In a year-end memo obtained by TheWrap, Griffin acknowledged 2014 was not the best of years.
“It’s no secret that 2014 was a difficult year for the entire cable news industry and especially for MSNBC,” Griffin wrote. “Technology is continuing to drive unprecedented changes across the media landscape – and we all should be taking a hard, honest look at how we need to evolve along with it.”
