If there's one thing that movie fans should recognize in the midst of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA's dual strikes, it's this: Films don't disappear the minute they end their original theatrical runs. Despite what studios would have you believe, the home release side of the equation involves several crucial factors such as residuals (which remain a top priority among writers and actors), transparency in streaming views, and more. I have good news and bad news and, well, they're both the same and whichever it is depends entirely on you. Go with God, people.
After previous reports indicated that the "Harry Potter" IP would be remade into an HBO series because absolutely nothing in a capitalist society is sacred, the inevitable has finally happened. Today, during a special Warner Bros. Discovery presentation, the studio officially announced that it is, in fact, moving forward with this new rebooted series. Oh, and the cherry on top of this content sundae? It'll debut on the newly-rebranded streaming service that will replace HBO Max. For whatever reason, it's now being referred to as just plain "Max." You know, like the name for a dog or a hygienic product or that mouth-breathing jock who was really good at running into opponents that we all knew in high school. Wait, where was I again?

"Titane" and "Raw" filmmaker Julia Ducournau took to the stage recently for a South By Southwest spotlight discussion facilitated by Austin Film Society's Holly Herrick, with /Film's Erin Brady reporting. During the event, Herrick asked Ducournau to weigh in on the "sky is falling" discussions that abound in the film industry, particularly in relation to the box office and pandemic-era changes that have drastically impacted the medium. The Palme d'Or winning filmmaker had some choice words about a situation that she says "we can't sugarcoat," especially when it comes to the way art is being received.
While Ducournau says that the situation speaks to "our capacity to adapt," she does find the film industry downturn concerning. "I know that's everything's crashing. Vanderpump Rules star Raquel Leviss was a pageant pro. But according to her, former President Donald Trump ended her career as a “pageant girl.”
After a bad breakup and her last state competition, Leviss said she was left trying to “find” herself in all the change. And one thing she hopes to do now is tear down some of the stereotypes about those who compete in pageantry.

After graduating from Sonoma State University in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, she continued competing after becoming a regular on Vanderpump Rules while dating James Kennedy.

It starts like any other yule log channel, with a warm fire filling the frame. A landlady interrupts the yuletide joy, her legs and vacuum shuffling past now and then. The doorbell rings; an elder woman with a Southern accent is there with her large adult son (dubbed "Pleatherface" at one point), claiming their car broke down, then forcing their way in. Later an unwitting couple returns to the home, unaware of the grisly death that went down moments before their arrival. All the good girls and boys watching become captive witness to hillbilly murder, haunted logs, a cult, aliens, and a night of laughs at a cozy cabin in the woods.
"Get in the holiday spirit with this cozy, crackling fire," reads the HBO Max page for Adult Swim's "Yule Log," the latest fever dream from Cheddar Goblin commercial creator Casper Kelly ("Too Many Cooks"). /Film's Matthew Bilodeau...

Despite what the Academy Awards and Sight and Sound polls would have us believe, horror is and has always been the lifeblood of cinema. During the pandemic, when theaters across the country were closed, it was an indie horror movie that had fans showing up to drive-ins and keeping the box office alive. When productions across the globe had closed up shop and gone home to await further instructions, it was a horror filmmaker who found a way to make a movie entirely over Zoom and gave movie lovers something to talk about. Horror is one of the only genres to never wane in popularity or profitability throughout the history of cinema, spawning an entire subculture of conventions, events, and avenues for merchandising that thrive year-round.
From the earliest days of the streaming wars, horror has been on the frontlines in the form of the AMC-owned streaming service, Shudder.

Steven Spielberg is immensely concerned about the future of cinema. The "Fabelmans" director went on record with A.O. Scott of the New York Times to talk about his new movie, but also to express extreme trepidation about where movies stand in the wake of Covid lockdowns. Movies, he feels, aren't drawing crowds to theaters the same way they did in the past, and -- perhaps controversially -- he felt that people streaming movies at home wasn't a suitable substitute. Back in 2013, in an interview with the Guardian, Spielberg had already predicted a sea change in the future of moviegoing, claiming that expensive, effect-based blockbusters (a class of film he helped pioneer back in the 1970s) would fetch higher ticket prices while smaller, more intimate dramas like his own "Lincoln" would play only smaller arthouses. The director also felt that Netflix and other streaming services should be omitted from Academy Award consideration,...

Paul Verhoeven grew up in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands and that's why he and his films have such a distaste for authoritarians. Even with years spent working in the U.S., the filmmaker has never adopted the black and white moral framing of America. "I have a hard time believing in all these hero stories," he once told The Independent.
Verhoeven was especially repelled when he tried to read "Starship Troopers," Robert Heinlein's novel where humanity has become an interstellar empire. The director recalled to Empire, "I stopped after two chapters because it was so boring. It is really quite a bad book... It's a very right-wing book." So what did Verhoeven do with the book he couldn't even finish? Why, make a movie out of it, of course.
As /Film's Erin Brady has written about, Verhoeven and his screenwriter Ed Neumeier decided their "Starship Troopers" wouldn't be just an adaptation of the novel,...

Nicolas Cage is back! Okay, it's not like he went anywhere, as the running joke goes in his recent meta-action-comedy "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent." Still, there's no denying we're in the middle of a Cage-aissance following his direct-to-video era, starting with films like "Mandy" and "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" in 2018, and continuing on to "Massive Talent" and, in particular, his haunting, ruminative drama "Pig" (pictured above).
Up next, Cage stars in "Butcher's Crossing," a western that finds the actor "at his most subdued, but still radiating energy that can only be described as malevolent," as /Film's Chris Evangelista put it in his positive review from the film's debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. It's one of several intriguing projects Cage has coming out between now and the end of 2023, including Chris McKay's horror-comedy "Renfield" (featuring Cage as Count Dracula himself).

Before the 2013 Miss Universe pageant gets underway, the contestants took part in a preliminary runway where they donned costumes that represented their countries. The results were mixed, with some being truly lovely, while others are a bit confusing.
Take Miss USA Erin Brady, for instance. Her costume, created by Victoria's Secret costume designer Martin Izquierdo, is a Transformer of all things. Brady looks like a strange version of Optimus Prime from the Michael Bay film series. Brady addressed the costume on her Instagram, writing, "Nothing screams national costume like the first Miss USA transformer. Embracing powerful women to a transforming country that's made up of so much. That's what Miss USA means to me." The irony is the Transformers line of toys originated in Japan, before they were renamed for the United States.

For 19-year-old Logan West, being Miss Teen USA definitely has its perks, like the opportunity to help other young women.
When Logan West was named Miss Teen USA on July 28, 2012, her whole life changed. Logan West: I Took A Stand Against Bullying
Receiving the Miss Teen USA title meant many things to Logan — most importantly that she got to stand up against bullies, something she admits she struggled with:
I was bullied when I was in the seventh grade by a student who told me I did not act my skin color, but I had no idea what bullying was. I didn’t really know how to describe it.
