Agora, the industry section of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, has selected 10 films from seven countries for its works in progress strand.
The strand selects projects in post-production stage, which have a link to the Mediterranean region and Southeastern Europe, and presents them to sales agents, distributors, producers, streaming platforms and festival programmers with the objective to raise finishing funds, secure sales agents, festival premieres and book meetings with potential partners.
“This year’s powerful projects challenge contemporary issues and gaze upon the human condition through gripping imagery, sometimes painfully beautiful storytelling and creative cinematic language. Their common compass navigates us through the subjects of social injustice, exploration of human relationships and common desires and choices people make to treat one another and the environment they inhabit,” the festival said in a statement.

The numbing apathy of poverty chained to tireless bureaucracy is met with a rude awakening in Brother’s Keeper, the fourth film from Turkish director Ferit Karahan. Ostensibly a social issue melodrama which pivots on the importance of connection and camaraderie as the only sure-fire way not to fall inextricably between the cracks for those without agency or privilege, this twenty-four-hour microcosm is compounded by metaphors of an environment as wintry outside as it is within. If the eventual finger pointing eventually satisfies as an administrative witch hunt, Karahan wisely keeps a close eye on his central protagonist, an innocent child whose haunting expressions say more than the scenario or the screenplay ever could.…...

Our second ever Best West Asian list is a bit smaller than the previous one, which included 20 films, but at least equal in terms of quality and diversity. In that fashion, and although Iran has the lion’s share, movies from Turkey, Georgia, Palestine, Lebanon, Iran, Kazakhstan and Bangladesh are included in a list that also showcases (experimental) documentaries, dramas, comedies, action and everything between.

The 25th edition of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival is about to kick off, and between 12-28 of November the audience will have the oportunity to watch a great number of films from Asia, strewn across festival’s various program sections, including all competition segments. We went through the complete program and counted no more or less than 69 films from the broader Asian region.
Quite surprising is the amount of competition titles in the main selection, with three world premieres, four international. Lu ZHang’s “Yanagawa” will have its European premiere at PÖFF.

Nominations in the 14th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (Apsa) were revealed today with nods for 38 films from 25 Asia Pacific countries and regions. Winners will be announced on Thursday, November 11, at the 14th Apsa Ceremony on the Australia Gold Coast. Nominations include Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car, which won the best screenplay award at Cannes, Asghar Farhadi’s Cannes Grand Prix winning, film A Hero, and the TIFF Platform award winning film Yuni directed by Kamila Andini.

Oliver Twist meets “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu” in Ferit Karahan’s sophomore feature, “Brother’s Keeper.” Set in a snowbound boarding school on the eastern edges of Turkey, the film tells the story of a boy desperate to get help for his sick friend yet stymied at every turn by bullying teachers and corrupt administrators. While Karahan (“The Fall From Heaven”) builds the narrative in a resolutely effective manner, ensuring the child’s increasing desperation gets under the audience’s skin, the scenario’s predictability and the stereotyped depiction of the adults impede emotional involvement.

Turkish director Ferit Karahan’s second feature “Brother’s Keeper” was awarded the Fipresci prize in the Panorama competition of Berlinale which had meatier films to offer – for instance, the likes of Carlos Alfonso Corral’s feature debut “Dirty Feathers”, or Damien Odoul’s “Theo and the Metamorphosis”. Despite of its many flows, it is a film that will stick in one’s mind for its depiction of life in a remote boarding school for Kurdish boys in Eastern Anatolia, cut off from the rest of the world by mountains and the long, cruel winter months.

The chill of anxiety is written all over the face of little Yusuf (Samet Yildiz) through most of this boarding school drama, a fearfulness borne, if not of direct experience then most certainly of expectation and something that has long since settled on him and his schoolmates, piling up like the snow which falls constantly outside.
There are few things more vulnerable looking than a child in a towel, and that's where Ferit Karahan, who co-wrote the screenplay with Gülistan Acet, begins the action, as the kids queue for their weekly bath, where they share a bucket, three to a cubicle. Although we never see the sticks that the masters frequently carry employed, like the children, there's always a fear that they might be. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Berlinale has developed a new festival format for its 71st edition.
In 2021, the Competition, Berlinale Special & Berlinale Series, Encounters, Berlinale Shorts, Panorama, Forum & Forum Expanded, Generation and Perspektive Deutsches Kino have been reduced in size due to the pandemic.
The majority of the Film Selection will be available for viewing online by industry representatives and accredited members of the press during the Industry Event from March 1–5, 2021.

“Wild Roots,” a drama about a lonely, ex-con bouncer who is reunited with his wild child daughter, has won the Works in Progress Award at Eastern Promises, Karlovy Vary Film Festival‘s industry section.
In the debut feature from director Hajni Kis, the two outsiders bond, but the father’s vehement nature and a family secret stand between them. The Hungary-Slovak Republic coproduction will receive a cash prize of Euros 10,000.
The jury described the film, produced by Júlia Berkes and Balázs Zachar, as “visually compelling,” and displaying a “distinct directing style and promising talent.” It added the director displays a “skilful ability to engage both professional and nonprofessional actors,” and delivers a “profoundly moving and intriguing story.”
The jury included Gabor Greiner, COO of Films Boutique, Faruk Güven, head of co-productions at Turkish Radio and TV Corporation, and Vanja Kaludjerčić, festival director at Rotterdam Film Festival.

The second edition of the new programme has awarded the upcoming film projects by Ferit Karahan and Hajni Kis. The second edition of First Cut+, the new programme aiming to boost the competitiveness and marketability of feature films which previously participated in the First Cut Lab, has wrapped and announced its award winners. Running online due to the pandemic as part of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival’s Eastern Promises Industry Days, First Cut+ has attracted more than 150 industry professionals during the online screening of the eight participating films (see the news), which are currently in post-production. The winner of the newly introduced First Cut+ Award (read the news) is Turkish-Romanian co-production Deskmate by Ferit Karahan, who will be receiving extra marketing related consultations by four First Cut+ mentors: Alexis Hamaide (L’Avventura Studio), Michael Arnon and Laurin Dietrich (Wolf Consultants) and Boris Pugnet (Tiramisu). Co-penned by Karahan and Gülistan.

Eight films in production from around the world made their way to the Industry@Tallinn International Works in Progress line-up. The Industry@Tallinn International Works in Progress pitching session of this year's Black Nights Film Festival showcased eight new film projects this year, coming from places as diverse as Turkey, Argentina and Kyrgyzstan amongst others and showcasing mainly young female characters in the lead. The 52nd International Antalya Film Festival this year was a case of “The Show Must Go On”. In spite of several setbacks which made Turkey quite unstable and put it on the U.S. State Department’s Alert List, it took place in the beautiful Turkish seaside site of the recent G20 Conference. It rivals Cannes for its Croisette; its boulevards exceed any street in Cannes. Organized by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality whose Mayor Menderes Türel, recently reelected for a five year term, is supporting this festival in a major way and directed by Elif Dağdeviren, the Festival’s Closing Night was an extravaganza of special effects as it announced its winners and handed out its Golden Orange 35 times.
The Festival’s industry component, the one year old, Antalya Film Forum (Aff), was directed by filmmaker Zeynep Özbatur Atakan. Industry guests included, among others, Jim Stark and his partner Nicolas Celis whom I had just recently written about. Idfa’s Ally Derks, Tiff’s Piers Handling, International sales agent Catherine Le Clef, BaseWerx for Film’s Claudia Landsberger, and Producer Linda Beath who all attended in spite of warnings of terrorism in Turkey. I also had the good fortune to meet the Bosnian Dp Mirsad Herović who seems to be working non-stop in Turkey these days, on his film “Iftarlik Gazoz/Pop A Revolution”.
At the ceremony I sat next to Alin Tasciyan, President of Fipresci who was also responsible for the international press in attendance. Days later, we went to a fabulous restaurant in Istanbul and talked more about the state of the industry and Turkey in general. This evening was one of the highlights of the trip and deserves an article of its own.
The jury was presided over by the elegant Ömer Vargi, known as the director who revitalized the Turkish cinema and who is also the head of the Istanbul Film Studios. The jury members included the award winning screenwriter Tarik Tufan and L.A.’s own James Ulmer, the entertainment journalist who created a ranking list of actors, known as "The Ulmer Scale" and who wrote the books James Ulmer's Hollywood Hot List -- The Complete Guide to Star Ranking and Directors Hot List, which measure the global value of stars and directors in a variety of areas including bankability, career management, professionalism, promotion, risk factors and talent. We again shared an evening together in Istanbul where we stayed at the same boutique hotel recommend to us by Israel’s Dan and Edna Fainaru , who unfortunately broke her foot at the festival.
The most notable film was “Ivy” which won four awards: National Competition for Best Movie -- plus 100.000 Turkish Lira (3Tl = 1Us$) and whose director-writer Tolga Karaçelik won the National Competition for Best Screenplay and for Best Director (for which he also won 1 million travel miles by Turkish Airlines) and whose actor Nadir Sarıbacak won the Best Actor Award of the National Competition.
“Ivy” is Tolga Karaçelik’s second film and previously played at Sundance 2015, Tiff 2015 Contemporary World Cinema, Thessaloniki, Istanbul and Karlovy Vary Film Festivals in 2015. The story is about a ship sailing to Egypt to load goods bound for Angola. The crew is forbidden to go to shore when a lien is put on the ship because the ship’s owner has gone bankrupt leaving the crew with no salaries paid which puts them into a nasty mood. While in anchorage, supplies run out, the crew fractures into parts, small arguments escalate into major conflicts and the ship becomes a battlefield.
“The Cold of Kalander” also won four prizes: the Dr. Avni Tolunay Jury Special Award, National Competition for Best Music to François Couturier, International Competition Best Actor to Haydar Şişman and National Competition to Nuray Yeşilaraz for Best Actress.
Winning three prizes, “Memories of the Wind," about an intellectual of Armenian origin hiding from Turkish militia by the Georgian border during WWII who falls in love with the wife of the farmer offering shelter, received a great round of applause with its Audience Award in International Competition, International Award for Best Music by Eleonore Fourning and Best Visual Director Award going to Andreas Sinanos. International sales by Arizona Flms.
“For Love of the Neighborhood” won the Special Jury Award, Best Art Direction Award and Best Editing Award. “The Apprentice” won for Best First Movie, and the Best Supporting Actress Award went to Çiğdem Selışık.
Elif Dağdeviren on the state of the festival and its mission today says,
"Our aim was and will continue to be a respected film festival on a par with all the important film festivals around the world. We choose all the films, events, national and international guests according to this mission and vision.
During the first 50 years, the festival served a very important purpose to support the cinema of Turkey locally. This was at a time when there were no other festivals and very few theatres in Turkey.
Antayla opened many doors for other successful local festivals and then needed to renew itself by becoming a meeting point of both the local and the world cinema sector. And it needed to modernize itself according to the technological innovations taking place worldwide. The first two years have proven that this is not a dream but a possible reality."

The Festival’s industry component, the one year old, Antalya Film Forum (Aff), was directed by filmmaker Zeynep Özbatur Atakan. Industry guests included, among others, Jim Stark and his partner Nicolas Celis whom I had just recently written about. Idfa’s Ally Derks, Tiff’s Piers Handling, International sales agent Catherine Le Clef, BaseWerx for Film’s Claudia Landsberger, and Producer Linda Beath who all attended in spite of warnings of terrorism in Turkey. I also had the good fortune to meet the Bosnian Dp Mirsad Herović who seems to be working non-stop in Turkey these days, on his film “Iftarlik Gazoz/Pop A Revolution”.
At the ceremony I sat next to Alin Tasciyan, President of Fipresci who was also responsible for the international press in attendance. Days later, we went to a fabulous restaurant in Istanbul and talked more about the state of the industry and Turkey in general. This evening was one of the highlights of the trip and deserves an article of its own.
The jury was presided over by the elegant Ömer Vargi, known as the director who revitalized the Turkish cinema and who is also the head of the Istanbul Film Studios. The jury members included the award winning screenwriter Tarik Tufan and L.A.’s own James Ulmer, the entertainment journalist who created a ranking list of actors, known as "The Ulmer Scale" and who wrote the books James Ulmer's Hollywood Hot List -- The Complete Guide to Star Ranking and Directors Hot List, which measure the global value of stars and directors in a variety of areas including bankability, career management, professionalism, promotion, risk factors and talent. We again shared an evening together in Istanbul where we stayed at the same boutique hotel recommend to us by Israel’s Dan and Edna Fainaru , who unfortunately broke her foot at the festival.
The most notable film was “Ivy” which won four awards: National Competition for Best Movie -- plus 100.000 Turkish Lira (3Tl = 1Us$) and whose director-writer Tolga Karaçelik won the National Competition for Best Screenplay and for Best Director (for which he also won 1 million travel miles by Turkish Airlines) and whose actor Nadir Sarıbacak won the Best Actor Award of the National Competition.
“Ivy” is Tolga Karaçelik’s second film and previously played at Sundance 2015, Tiff 2015 Contemporary World Cinema, Thessaloniki, Istanbul and Karlovy Vary Film Festivals in 2015. The story is about a ship sailing to Egypt to load goods bound for Angola. The crew is forbidden to go to shore when a lien is put on the ship because the ship’s owner has gone bankrupt leaving the crew with no salaries paid which puts them into a nasty mood. While in anchorage, supplies run out, the crew fractures into parts, small arguments escalate into major conflicts and the ship becomes a battlefield.
“The Cold of Kalander” also won four prizes: the Dr. Avni Tolunay Jury Special Award, National Competition for Best Music to François Couturier, International Competition Best Actor to Haydar Şişman and National Competition to Nuray Yeşilaraz for Best Actress.
Winning three prizes, “Memories of the Wind," about an intellectual of Armenian origin hiding from Turkish militia by the Georgian border during WWII who falls in love with the wife of the farmer offering shelter, received a great round of applause with its Audience Award in International Competition, International Award for Best Music by Eleonore Fourning and Best Visual Director Award going to Andreas Sinanos. International sales by Arizona Flms.
“For Love of the Neighborhood” won the Special Jury Award, Best Art Direction Award and Best Editing Award. “The Apprentice” won for Best First Movie, and the Best Supporting Actress Award went to Çiğdem Selışık.
Elif Dağdeviren on the state of the festival and its mission today says,
"Our aim was and will continue to be a respected film festival on a par with all the important film festivals around the world. We choose all the films, events, national and international guests according to this mission and vision.
During the first 50 years, the festival served a very important purpose to support the cinema of Turkey locally. This was at a time when there were no other festivals and very few theatres in Turkey.
Antayla opened many doors for other successful local festivals and then needed to renew itself by becoming a meeting point of both the local and the world cinema sector. And it needed to modernize itself according to the technological innovations taking place worldwide. The first two years have proven that this is not a dream but a possible reality."

Israeli film-maker Itamar Alcalay’s Darkroom, revolving around a young gay Armenian man forced into an arranged marriage, has won the top $50,000 prize at the Sam Spiegel International Film Lab’s pitching event.
The Death Of Black Horses by Kurdistan’s Ferit Karahan, a story of family intrigue in a Kurdish village during the First World War, clinched the second prize of $20,000.
The two prizes were donated by the Beracha Foundation.
Darkroom, produced by Amir Harel and Ayelet Kait of Tel Aviv-based Lama Films, is Alcalay’s debut feature, after a number of documentary shorts.
Set in a down-at-heel neighbourhood near the central bus station in Tel Aviv, it revolves around the relationship between hot-blooded Armenian Artium, his lover Amir and a free-spirited girl to whom Artium is married-off by his family.
