Bella Sims won an Olympic medal before her 17th birthday. Now, she’s taking a brief break from elite competition to enjoy the mundanities of life. The swimming star is the subject of Bella Sims Needs A Life, a nine-part series produced by Portal A that will drop on her official Instagram page.
As 18-year-old Sims prepares to attend the University of Florida in the fall, she’s catching up on the activities she previously put aside. In a trailer for Bella Sims Needs A Life, the titular star discusses the impact her swimming career has had on her social life. “My life is awesome,” Sims said, “but it’s not like the life of a lot of my friends. So for a week, it will be fun to have somewhat of a normal life.”

Portal A has revealed nine projects it is developing as part of its $500,000 investment in experimental content. The digital-savvy production company is backing an eclectic mix of digital programs through the Moonshots program it introduced this past February.
Several of the projects in the Portal A slate will utilize emerging technologies like AI and short-form video. Nightmare Fuel, for example, is a TikTok series that will combine horror stories with AI-generated audio and visuals.
By embracing experimentation, Portal A’s Moonshots unit is taking the company “back to its innovative roots,” according to Portal A Director of Original Projects Jacob Motz. As the leader of the Moonshots program, Motz is looking to recapture the core values of a company that once produced global video game contests, upside-down cooking tutorials and shot-for-shot remakes of Abba music videos. (Portal A also produced the year-end Rewind videos alongside YouTube.)

Portal A is committing $500,000 in funding to five indie content projects this year through its Moonshots program.

First-round projects also included American Pathogen, a 30-minute documentary about the Trump administration’s response to Covid; The Adventures of Nunchuk Larry, an “off-the-wall action film” made in partnership with longtime YouTube creators The Gregory Brothers; and Robu, an award-winning short film directed by Portal A’s co-founder Kai Hasson.

Exclusive: Tony Amendola (Stargate Sg-1) will topline Rough Magic: Exit Shakespeare, a new film from veteran TV director Andy Wolk (The Practice) and Silver Spring Road Films that has recently wrapped production.
The film is set in 1611 on a single night where Shakespeare (Amendola) is at a crisis point in his career. It’s about how writers age, their jealousies, resentments, and regrets, why they can’t revisit their old glories, and how their writing can overwhelm their life. Shakespeare has sacrificed much of his family life for his theatrical success and now—haunted with guilt about missing his young son’s death to the plague—he is forced to reflect on the price at which glory comes.
WGA and Humanitas Award winner Wolk directed from a script he wrote with Elliot Krieger, and produced alongside Matt Handy.

Even in trying times, a great movie can do wonders for you. The prospect of watching Sam Richardson and Brittany Snow in a romantic comedy already offered up some glowing potential, but nothing will prepare you for how wonderful this film is. A charming, funny, and sexy rom-com, Hooking Up even manages to get serious at times in a way that never betrays its core entertainment value. With terrific performances by Richardson and Snow, who display absolutely phenomenal chemistry, this is one of the year’s most pleasant surprises. Coming to VOD on Friday (an initially theatrical run is obviously out of the question right now), it deserves to find a place in your hearts. The film is a romantic comedy couched around a road trip. When Bailey (Richardson) and Darla (Snow) first meet, they’re in a school entering very different support groups. He’s a survivor of testicular...

YouTube kicked off Lgbtq+ Pride Month in the throes of an explosive scandal, amid calls to remove right-wing commentator Steven Crowder from its platform, after he was discovered to have extensively harassed Vox journalist Carlos Maza about his sexuality (and also promoted a T-shirt line emblazoned with the slogan ‘Socialism Is For F*gs). YouTube ultimately opted to let Crowder’s channel stand, but apologized to the Lgbtq+ community for the hurtful outcome.
Now, YouTube -- which has long been outspoken in its support for the Lgbtq+ community from a corporate marketing perspective -- has announced a new film produced alongside World Of Wonder (RuPaul’s Drag Race) and storytelling nonprofit StoryCorps titled Stonewall Outloud.
The documentary will chronicle the Stonewall Riots of 50 years ago -- a series of protests in New York against an anti-gay police raid on the Stonewall Inn bar that became a seminal event in the gay rights movement.

Giving the film to Mike Flanagan though and letting him do what he wants with it, horror fans are in for a treat. This is exactly what Ouija: Origin of Evil is, a treat for horror fans.
Set in 1967 Ouija: Origin of Evil is a prequel to the first movie. In it we see single mother Doris Zander (Elizabeth Reaser) and her two daughters Lina (Annalise Basso) and Doris (Lulu Wilson) running a séance scam. When the Ouija board game is used as a new stunt to bolster their business,...

If The Breakfast Club and Ocean’s 11 were shoved into Seth Brundle’s telepods, Coin Heist is the unholy abomination that would stagger out the other end, pressing a shotgun to its malformed head and begging to be put out of its misery.
Based on the young adult novel by Elisa Ludwig, Coin Heist opens with a group of students on a field trip to the Us Mint, their slack-jawed un-enthusiasm only briefly lifting when the cops show up and drag their principal away in handcuffs. It turns out he’s embezzled $10 million from the school funding, putting the very institution itself in jeopardy.
And so, hacker Alice (Alexis G. Zall), athlete Benny (Jay Walker). honor student Dakota (Sasha Pieterse) and slacker (and the embezzling principal’s son) Jason (Alex Saxon), band together to save the school. Their plan: break into the Us Mint, secretly manufacture quarters with a flaw...

"You realize if this doesn't go perfectly, we are all going to jail." Netflix has debuted a trailer for the film Coin Heist, the latest little indie from young filmmaker Emily Hagins out of Austin. We've featured her work before, including her most recent film before this, titled Grow Up Tony Phillips. Coin Heist is indeed about a "coin heist" - four different high school kids decide to team up and figure out a way to break into the U.S. Mint and pay off a big debt by planting flawed coins. The cast includes Alex Saxon, Alexis G. Zall, Sasha Pieterse, Jay Walker, Blanche Baker, David W. Thompson and Elijah Boothe. This looks like it might be fun, and I always like supporting talented young filmmakers like Emily. Give it a look below. Here's the first official trailer for Emily Hagins' Coin Heist, direct from Netflix's YouTube: United by dire circumstances,...

First off, Andrea Russett will join Fullscreen’s roster of influencer-driven talk shows with an as-yet-untitled series in 2017 in which the YouTube star and actress will serve cocktails, dish on gossip, share relationship and sex advice, and host guests in her 90s-themed basement set. Other Fullscreen talkers include Shane Dawson’s Shane And Friends, Zall Good with Alexis G. Zall, and Not Too Deep with Grace Helbig. Many prominent YouTube stars have gotten into the podcast game. And Fullscreen, a subscription service launched by the digital network of the same name earlier this year, has sought to televise several of these podcasts, including Shane Dawson’s Shane And Friends, and Zall Good with Alexis G. Zall.
The latest creator to premiere her podcast -- in video form -- on the $4.99 monthly subscription service is Grace Helbig, who launched her Not Too Deep chat show in 2014, whereupon it catapulted to the top of the iTunes charts. Fullscreen will now team with Helbig to produce an exclusive visual edition, with two back-to-back episodes premiering next Monday.

Two of the most popular YouTube stars in the world are two months away from splashing into the film world. On September 26th, the film Laid In America, which stars Caspar Lee and Olajide “Ksi” Olatunji, will premiere in the UK. It will make its stateside debut the following day.
Laid in America, which we first heard about more than a year ago, follows its two stars as they descend upon Yankee shores and get into all sorts of trouble. The film is being billed as a raunchy teen comedy, and its plot, which can be summed up as “two guys try to lose their virginity on the night before they leave the United States,” is reminiscent of the enduring 1999 film American Pie.
Like many of the other so-called “influencer films” that star digital media personalities in feature-length productions, Laid in America will feature a supporting cast filled with Lee and Ksi’s colleagues.

Though the cultural impact of ‘Coming Out’ videos on YouTube are undeniable -- and particularly pertinent this Lgbt Pride Month -- past announcements have typically been splashy and solemn affairs. But today, 18-year-old vlogger Alexis G. Zall, who also hosts her own chat show on the fullscreen Svod platform, announced she was a lesbian in a way that almost seemed like a gloriously casual afterthought.
In a video titled 18 Tips For 18 Years (below), posted on her birthday, Zall prefaced number 8 by saying, “I’m about to get gay.”
“It is totally okay to be a girl who likes girls or a boy who likes boys. And me, personally, I am a girl who likes girls,” Zall said, before imagining the reaction of her more than 1 million subscribers: “Did that bitch just come out?” Zall added that she wouldn’t rule out dating guys in the future -- and that that was totally okay,...

Update, Monday Actuals, 4 Pm: All of the top 10 films, except for Fox’s Taken 3, came in lower than their weekend projections yesterday morning due to the Super Bowl, with Warner Bros./Village Roadshow missing its target record as the largest grossing title over Super Bowl weekend. Disney’s Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds Concert holds onto to that title ($31.117M) with American Sniper ranking second with a $30.66M Fss. Said one rival distribution chief, “It’s hard to nail down these predictions down to the penny when there is something so extraordinary like the Super Bowl in the market. No one saw this as being the highest-rated Super Bowl ever. Next weekend will be easier to project.” Warner Bros. was initially anticipating a 70% drop on Super Bowl Sunday for American Sniper from its Saturday B.O. of $16.5M but yesterday charted lower with a 74% decline for $4.4M.
