‘Member the Member Berries? Trey Parker members the Member Berries. So much so, in fact, that the “South Park” co-creator used them as a point of reference for “Ready Player One,” Steven Spielberg’s nostalgia-laced new film, in a Hollywood Reporter interview.
An adaptation of Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name, the film concerns a virtual-reality game that brings together a huge number of ’80s pop-culture touchstones: “Back to the Future,” Freddy Krueger, “Mad Max,” and so on and so forth.

“Loving Vincent” is being billed as the first fully oil-painted feature film, but even that lofty description doesn’t do just justice to the painstaking and extremely technical process it took to make this one-of-kind hand-crafted film. IndieWire recently talked to co-directors Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman to find out how, over the course of seven years, they made this film that tells the story of the real-life Vincent van Gogh through his paintings.
The Backstory
Co-director Dorota Kobiela was a painter working in animation and frustrated by a career that revolved around working on other people’s projects. Determined to make something of her own, she set out to combine her passion for painting and film. As a university student, she studied the intersection of psychology and art, writing her thesis on the letters of van Gogh. Using this as starting point, she came up with an idea for...

After more than six years in production, Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman’s “Loving Vincent” is finally coming to U.S. theaters this September, and it’s safe to say nobody has ever seen anything quite like it before. In telling the story of Vincent van Gogh, the directors have decided to create the world’s first oil painted movie. That’s right, all 65,000 frames have been hand painted by 125 different artists. Not even Pixar has managed to do something like this.

If there’s any doubt that Universal’s Illumination Entertainment is the new powerhouse of animation, allow this record-breaking set of news to seal the deal: The “Despicable Me” franchise has officially surpassed DreamWorks’ “Shrek” to become the highest grossing animated franchise in history. What’s particularly impressive about this feat is that “Despicable Me” managed to make history in just four films, while “Shrek” needed five movies.
