Aliens have sent old school video game characters to destroy our world in Chris Columbus ' Pixels, a live-action/CGI comedy that'll have you wanting to travel back to the sweet arcade days of the 1980s. Even as an Adam Sandler/Kevin James-vehicle, Pixels deserves to be more inspired. The arcade-loving, '80s-centric action-comedy transitioned to the big screen from Patrick Jean's inventive world-domination-by-8-bits short film wields the fine set pieces, tech resources and token-required games to earn a top score. But Sandler and his team don't even attempt to advance to the next level, constantly drawing on the comedian's trademark sophomoric cheat codes to hastily produce what's essentially the poor man's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, global-annihilation movie. Make no mistake: this is a Happy Madison production through-and-through. Minus extensive pratfall jokes with James or unnecessary Rob Schneider or Steve Buscemi pop-ups, almost every check mark from the Sandler production list is marked. Cheap insults directed towards one physical trait from different supporting charactersc Check. Sandler getting the out-of-his-league girl (in this case, Michelle Monaghan) because he's our main slubby do-gooderc You bet.

Adam Sandler misfires in Pixels, a film that has its moments, but simply not enough of them...
Judging by recent box office receipts, 1990s nostalgia is in full force. But there still must be something said about the 80s. The decade that gave us dayglo and Mario, shoulder-pad fashion and Pac-Man, still looms large for both the generation that grew up in that time and everyone else who wishes they could at least visit. And now? Pixels is offering an invitation engraved in eight-bit.
Essentially a selective memory time capsule, this action-packed comedy and pseudo-epic is blinged out in 80s euphoria for the arcade games of the past, as well as a kind of catch-all of Generation X touchstones. For a story ostensibly about an alien invasion, even the antagonistic threats and demands come in the guise of faded VHS recordings from Madonna’s early MTV interviews.

When it comes to geeking out, nothing comes close to Star Wars and an opportunity to immerse yourself in a galaxy far, far away, is one that cannot be missed.
UK events company Future Cinema specialises in secret, interactive film screenings, the majority of which take place in Londo. With experiences ranging from recreating 1920s Beaumont for Miller’s Crossing to sudden incarceration for Shawshank Redemption, the organisation has created a series of visually memorable events that raises a normal trip to the cinema to a multi-sensory level.
Last summer, the company held their first ‘Secret Cinema Presents’ event, hosting Back to the Future in a recreation of 1950’s Hill Valley. Despite initial cancellations, the run was an overwhelming success, so much so that not only did it put Robert Zemeckis’ hit back in the UK box office but has also inspired a similar event to be hosted in Los Angeles later this year.

Putting the mobility and practicality of a GoPro camera to good effect, Sony Pictures has today released a new behind-the-scenes clip for Chris Columbus’ upcoming actioner Pixels, which showcases some of the stuntwork and action scenes as earth is besieged by invading alien lifeforms.
What makes the Adam Sandler-led film so intriguing, though, is that these oncoming extra-terrestrials will take the form of beloved 80s video game characters. From Pac-Man to Donkey Kong, Galaga to Space Invaders, each and every trailer coming out of Sony Pictures’ budding blockbuster has been a blast of nostalgia for those who grew up controlling and/or fighting the pixelated creations.
Mind you, invading aliens isn’t the most preposterous plot point within Pixels, as it stars Paul Blart: Mall Cop‘s Kevin James as the Potus who will likely go down as one of the more bizzare picks for the Oval Office in quite some time.

The world of Star Wars has been re-created for the latest immersive experience by Secret Cinema. Michael Rosser headed to a galaxy far, far away to find out if it would prove a trip into hyperspace… or hypersleep.
Secret Cinema has staged its biggest production to date – of that there is no doubt.
A team of more than 400 people at the immersive cinema specialist have recreated the fantasy world of Star Wars across 18 acres in London – twice the size of the space used to stage its hit production of Back To The Future last summer.
It reportedly took a year for founder Fabien Riggall to secure a license from Disney - owner of the Star Wars franchise - and its staging comes ahead of the much-anticipated release of new instalment The Force Awakens in December.
The ambition is bigger, the interactive elements more immersive and the sets enormous. But is bigger always better?

I’m more divided on Pixels than on any other blockbuster hitting screens this summer. On one hand, it boasts Chris Columbus at the helm, and initial trailers have made the alien-invasion action-comedy seem like quite a lot of fun. But on the other hand, it has both Adam Sandler and Kevin James, two of the most detestable comedians working in Hollywood today. Here’s hoping that their distinctively lazy brand of comedy doesn’t derail the movie.
In honor of the 35th anniversary of Pac-Man, Sony has unveiled a new clip from the flick, which isn’t really anything more than an extension of a scene we already saw in one of the film’s earlier trailers, involving Denis Akiyama as Pac-Man creator Tōru Iwatani. Still, it’s the only moment from the preview that really warranted any laughs, so there’s no harm in the studio sending it our way once more.

Sometimes one trailer just isn't enough, just like sometimes one cup of coffee isn't enough. Both of those happen to be the case today, as Sony has released two new trailers for its upcoming film Pixels just as I'm about to bike over to my favorite local coffee shop for a little extra caffeine boost. Pixels seeks to delight the classic gamer slash geek in all of us, Wreck-It Ralph style, as it features a number of iconic video game characters including those from Pac-man, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Galaga, Frogger, Q*bert, and Space Invaders. Sounds pretty cool, rightc I'll admit, the physical world-building in the two trailers does look pretty rad, but these days I'm always skeptical of anything starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James. Pixels also stars Michelle Monaghan, though, whom I'm generally a fan of, and it's got Q*bert. Who knows, maybe it won't be completely...

What’s old is new again in the latest trailer for Chris Columbus’ Pixels, which sees Adam Sandler and his gang of friends witness the earth come under siege from the very video game character they grew up with.
From Donkey Kong to Q*Bert, Pac-Man to Space Invaders, the clip is as bombastic as it is nostalgic, with a hoard of extraterrestrials misinterpreting our intergalactic search for intelligent life. Now, having travelled light years to find us, the aliens declare war on humanity leaving President Will Cooper (Paul Blart: Mall Cop star Kevin James) to call upon his childhood friends in order to prevent mass extinction at the hands of, well, malevolent pixels.
And so, it isn’t long before Cooper is joined by the greatest video game champs of the ’80s, replete with all of the old stereotypes one would expect from the generation. Alongside Adam Sandler’s...

What would you do if aliens decided to attack the world using ‘80s video-game staples turned into very real threats? You’d turn to Adam Sandler, of course! At least, that’s the thinking in the new trailer for Pixels. Spawned from Patrick Jean’s inventive short, Pixels posits what happens when wrong-headed extra-terrestrials interpret examples of video games included in a space probe as a declaration of war. With creations such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Centipede threatening the globe, an unusual countermeasure is suggested. Us President Will Cooper (Kevin James) tracks down old friend and ‘80s video game champ Sam Brenner (Sandler) so he can put together a team of old-school arcade masters including Josh Gad’s Ludlow Lamonsoff and Peter Dinklage’s Billy Mitchell-styled Eddie Plant to defeat the techno-menace. Together, they’ll utilise interesting tweaks on game tropes (such as driving Mini Coopers named for...

The middle of Spring actually means a new selection of summer blockbusters to look forward to, and with a ton of big-budget films slated to come out within the next few months and beyond, the summer of 2015 looks like one to remember.
From the new Mad Max (which is already on our end-of -year top ten list event though we haven’t yet seen it) to Avengers, Poltergeists, male strippers, talking teddy bears, and a reboot of the Jurassic Park franchise, this summer’s trips to the theaters will be jam-packed with sequels and new tales. From May 1st right through to the end of August, some of the movies on our list could wind up on year-end “best of” lists or even receive some Oscar talk by December.
Grab your calendar, because Wamg has a rundown of this summer’s films we’re most excited about, so check them out below!

Somewhere in La, a casting director was asked to find an actor to play a Us president for the next Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter) movie, and inexplicably, they decided on Kevin James (Paul Blart: Mall Cop).
This casting choice for this summer’s Pixels is the perfect microcosm of the entire action-heavy comedy. It’s ridiculous, unthinkable, insane, hilarious, and also so incredibly gutsy that we can’t help needing it in our life.
When aliens attack the Earth with real-life video game characters, President Will Cooper (James) calls upon his best friend, former 1980s arcade champion Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler) for help. With a team of retrogamers (Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad) by his side, it’s up to Sam to save the word against Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, and a fleet of Space Invaders.
And people say video games were a waste of time.

Does anyone else get the sense that Hollywood still doesn’t quite “get” video games in 2015? If you look at the movies it’s all still feeding quarters into a machine, getting a high score, winning a new life, joystick flailing, button mashing, and old 32-bit side-scrollers with wacky sound effects. Yeah, there’s Wreck-It Ralph and a few other good examples, but then you look at something like Pixels, and the movies still have a lot of catching up to do to where games are today.
Pixels, directed by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, Home Alone) stars Adam Sandler as an ’80s video game champion tasked by the President (Kevin James) to fight off invading aliens taking the form of classic ’80s games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. And though I wouldn’t put it past Hollywood to make a dark, gritty reimagining of Space Invaders or Missile Control as...

Hollywood’s last foray into the inner world of videogames resulted in the brilliantly tongue-in-cheek Wreck-It-Ralph. The 2012 family comedy explored the workings of a regular gaming arcade when the humans leave and the 8-bit inhabitants of its games run riot. While that caper delighted in its animated format, for Sony’s summer tentpole comedy Pixels, those iconic characters come to life in a live-action extravaganza.
Brought to the screen by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, Mrs. Doubtfire), Pixels takes its inspiration from a 2010 short film and expands on its retro-meta story. After Nasa sends a time capsule into space, packed with pop culture items representative of life on earth, an extraterrestrial race seizes it and misconstrues its contents. The aliens who receive the goods mistakenly conclude that the bundle of video games included are actually a threat from humans – and so begins an intergalactic war.

I was really hoping this wasn’t going to feel like an Adam Sandler movie, but here we have it, he’s name dropping video game franchises. Director Chris Columbus has done a fine enough job at getting the look of the movie right, that is when it’s compared to it’s original short film (watch it below). I just could have done without Kevin James doing his Kevin James bit.

It’s been a while since we last caught wind of Pixels, Chris Columbus’ bold adaptation that pits Adam Sandler and Co. against a group on oncoming aliens, but today, we’ve been treated to a trio of otherworldly stills that showcase a very familiar looking extraterrestrial threat.
The images, which you can feast your eyes on in the gallery below, depict the likes of Pac-Man and Space Invaders wreaking havoc on some of the world’s most famous landmarks. And so, with planet earth hanging in the balance, the world turns to Sandler’s Sam Brenner — a former video game champion who is now living out the rest of his days as a home theater installer. All that changes overnight, though, when Brenner must band together the finest thumbs in the business — namely Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad’s characters — to overcome the galactic threat.
