Horror movies like Deep Fear take place underground, and they are often the most effective as far as compelling scares go. They evoke a fear that everyone can understand. Trap someone in a confined, dark space below ground, then have them be pursued by someone (or something) — it’s a simple but winning formula.
Screambox‘s latest release Deep Fear, as well as the nine other movies below, reinforce feelings of claustrophobia and remind you of what possible evils could be hiding below the surface. As Above, So Below, The Descent, C.H.U.D., Creep and The Midnight Meat Train are all familiar examples of this subgenre, but this list focuses on underseen movies set underground.

What horrors lurk beneath the earth? In the case of Tikhon Kornev's upcoming Russian horror film Diggers (Диггеры) it looks and feels like some sort of (not so) distant cousin to the Predator. We first came across this one back in December with the arrival of a first teaser and now that it is approaching its theatrical release that early offering has been followed by something significantly more substantial. With the first offering we knew people we disappearing underground without knowing why while now we get a good look at the exact ugly cause. Production values are quite good on the whole here, check it out below....

The Russian language film Diggers has a new trailer. The film takes place beneath Moscow, in an old subway station and route. Here, a train has missed its stop and people have gone missing; a search party has gone in to rescue the missing passengers, but they have found something malevolent in the dark. Diggers is from director Tikhon Kornev (Mamy). And, the film stars Roman Evdokimov and Anna Vasilyeva. The exciting trailer for the film is hosted here. The film looks similar to another, End of the Line (2007). Both films take place deep below ground. While it does not appear that there is a religious, doomsday cult in Diggers, both films feature a dangerous situation, in a confining subway tunnel. As well, a release date for Diggers is still forthcoming. But, it will be posted here, once announced. Release Date: Tba. Director: Tikhon Kornev. Cast: Roman Evdokimov, Anna Vasilyeva Alena Savastova,...

While the concept of upcoming Russian horror Diggers (Диггеры) will undoubtedly remind some of Christopher Smith's Creep there's plenty here to like on its own merits. When the last train of the night blows through the station and disappears deep into the tunnel system beneath Moscow rather than stopping and releasing its passengers, and when authorities successfully stifle all talk of the disappeared train and passengers, it falls to a group of young people to work their way into the tunnel system to try and discover what has happened to their friends. And while I have no idea if they succeed in finding what they went in looking for, they certainly find something.Production values on the Tikhon Kornev film look absolutely first rate. Take a...
