Like Johnny Damon, “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” isn’t Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s first reality rodeo. But while Damon just used his business acumen to fit whatever fancy of Donald Trump’s on “Celebrity Apprentice,” Abdul-Jabbar did something far more daring on a far better, but sadly short-lived, show: “Splash.”
“Splash,” ABC’s version of the Dutch hit, aired only one season in 2013 and was just “Diving with the Stars.” It was ridiculous, awesome, fun as hell, and my former TV Guide colleague Sadie Gennis and I miss it very, very much. Everyone had personalized walkout songs for God’s sake! (Abdul-Jabbar’s song was appropriately named “Skyhook.”)

Last spring, ABC aired a new celebrity water competition called Splash. Was it a ratings success? Has it been cancelled or will it be back for a second season later this summer?
Based on a Dutch series, the Splash TV show pits celebrities against one another in a diving competition that includes backflips, somersaults, and high dives. Hosted by Joey Lawrence and Charissa Thompson, the celebrities are coached by Greg Louganis and judged by Steve Foley and David Boudia. Contestants in season one were Keshia Knight Pulliam, Chuy Bravo, Ndamukong Suh, Kendra Wilkinson, Katherine Webb, Louie Anderson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Brandi Chastain, Drake Bell, Nicole Eggert, and Rory Bushfield.
Many performers are willing to give their all for an audience and this show's participants had plenty of injuries over the course of the eight weeks. Unfortunately, fewer and fewer people tuned in to watch each week.

Olympians remembered one of their fallen comrades during the halfpipe finals on Thursday night. Canadian Sarah Burke was honored in a fitting tribute as a formation of skiers created a heart on the snowy slope of Sochi, over two years after her death. "She would be smiling down on the Olympic Games and everything that is going on around it. She is an inspiration, and she would absolutely be smiling," Burke's husband, Rory Bushfield, told The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive interview before he left for the Olympics earlier this month. Standing on top of the podium as the youngest American to win gold during the Sochi Games, freestyle skiing half-pipe champion Maddie Bowman (pictured left) took a moment to acknowledge another champion - the late Canadian freeskier Sarah Burke (pictured right), who tragically passed during training two years ago at the age of 29. "Sarah Burke is watching over us tonight," Bowman said, "and we just want to honor her as much as we can." Sarah was one of the athletes known to have pushed for freestyle skiing to be added as an Olympic sport, and it was at Sarah's urging that French skier Marie Martinod, this year's silver medalist, returned after a six-year hiatus. Marie paid tribute to Sarah in her own way: a snowflake manicure, reminiscent of the snowflake tattoo Sarah had on her foot, which has also become the symbol for the Sarah Burke Foundation. Ahead of this year's Games,...

Showing love to Sarah Burke! The late Canadian freestyle skier was honored at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia on Thursday, Feb. 20. Crew members skied down the middle of the halfpipe in the shape of a heart to honor Burke, who helped bring halfpipe skiing to the Olympics. Burke died at the age of 29 from injuries she sustained during a training accident in January 2012. If it wasn’t for Sarah Burke, there might not have been a ski halfpipe event to compete in at the Winter Olympics this year. Burke, who died before she could realize her dreams of competing in the event on the Olympic stage, was celebrated by her fellow skiers on Thursday in a moving tribute.
Sarah Burke's Tribute At Sochi
Had Burke been alive, she’d have been the favorite to win the gold in the first-ever Olympic ski halfpipe. Rising to the occasion to capture the medal in her absence was American Maddie Bowman. Once on the podium, with the medal around her neck, Bowman raised her arms upwards, towards the skies.
“Sarah Burke is watching over us tonight. We just want to honor her as much as we can,” explained Bowman to NBC Sports.

Splash crowned its first winner Tuesday and Rory Bushfield walked away with the Crystal Splash trophy (yes, that's what it's called). The extreme freestyle skier and his insane acrobatics, not to mention ruptured eardrum, emphatically beat out Drake Bell and runner-up Nicole Eggert, who suffered a nasty and literal backflop into the water on her final dive. "It was up to the fans [to vote for the winner], so you never know what's going to happen," Bushfield tells TVGuide.com. "But Nicole was pretty badass. She went for that double and almost had it." See whate else Bushfield, had to say about his victory, if Bell was really calling him out and doing the show for his late wife, pioneering freestyle skier Sarah Burke.

It was a season of tough injuries on ABC's "Splash," and the brutal nature of the sport continued right into the finale. it came down to Drake Bell, Rory Bushfield and Nicole Eggert for the title, but Drake came up short in the first round. The finalists had to get past the judges' votes in Round 1 to face the audience vote in the final round.
Both Nicole and Rory nailed their landings much sharper than Drake did, but at least he was gracious in defeat this time.
When it came time for their final dives, though, Nicole had a terrifying mishap. Trying for a double backflip from the 7-meter platform, she landed flat on her back. Thankfully, this was an audience voted round or the competition would have been over there.

Celebrity diving series "Splash" came to a close on Tuesday night, with extreme skier Rory Bushfield taking home the grand prize. Bushfield struggled in the beginning of the show, since as a skier, he's been taught never to land on his head -- an important skill when one is going into a pool head-first.
Ultimately, he overcame his physical obstacles, including a painful ruptured eardrum. He was driven by the memory of his wife, freestyle skier Sarah Burke, who died last January after a crash in Park City, Utah. "Sarah was my dream girl before she knew who I was," he said on the show. "A lot of the craziest things I ever did were just kind of to impress Sarah."

"Splash" welcomed a special celebrity diver to its latest episode, and their surprise guest brought along a diving prop. Entering masked, Tony Hawk didn't reveal himself until he was on top of the 10-meter platform. Once there, he grabbed a skateboard and performed an unusual hybrid skate-dive that earned him high praise from the judges.
For the rest of the night, though, the judges were very stern with the Final Four, in all the right ways. They deducted as they should, even giving out the lowest scores yet for Brandi Chastain's disastrous first dive. The night was structured so that the person with the highest combined scores from the judges and the audience would automatically advance to next week's finale. The other three would compete head-to-head-to-head in a dive-off to see which two would move on.
Rory Bushfield did an impressive three-somersault dive from the 10-meter platform to earn his way into the finale.

It's one thing when a celebrity gets hurt training for the ballroom on Dancing with the Stars. But as fans of this spring's TV diving competition Splash have learned, when you put a star up on a springboard or platform, the danger level soars. Or does it? It was all about togetherness on the latest episode of ABC's "Splash." The celebrity divers were paired with champion divers to perform synchronized dives. It's hard enough to master these dives in the short time they have to train, much less to do it in synch with a pro. To make it even more challenging -- and fun -- their partners are all children.
The children proved quite the inspiration for the celebrities as well, as most everyone really improved their game from last week. Even more impressive, not only did they improve the quality of their dives, but they synchronization with the kids was pretty impressive as well.
But a nagging injury left Rory Bushfield training his partner a bit instead of the other way around. During practice, he hit the water on the ear he'd already injured earlier. Because of that, they had to try a different dive...

ABC‘s new injury-plagued Splash isn’t the only reality diving show hampered by safety concerns. Xinhua News Agency reports 18-year-old Peng Jiaxuan, assistant to martial artist/contestant Shi Xiaolong on China’s Celebrity Splash China, drowned in a pool during a training session April 19. The show broadcast on China’s Zhejiang TV and ABC’s Splash are both spin-offs of the original Dutch format. The death happened a day after Us Splash contestant Nicole Eggert was injured on the set of ABC’s American version and subsequently hospitalized. In recent weeks fellow contestant Rory Bushfield ruptured an eardrum and Louie Anderson suffered bruised ribs in training, while show-related injuries forced Katherine Webb and Chuy Bravo to quit the show in its first month on the air.

The incident comes after Chuy Bravo first left for an injury sustained during the show, followed by Kendra Wilkinson's quitting, Rory Bushfield's rupturing an ear drum, and Katherine Webb's departure just a few days ago.

Who knew that joining "Splash" would be the most dangerous job in Hollywood?
The ABC reality show adds another injured cast member to its growing list with a report from TMZ that Nicole Eggert was hospitalized on Thursday (April 18) after a dive went very wrong while taping the show.
Sources tell the outlet that the former "Baywatch" star was attempting a dive that included multiple backflips when something went wrong and she back-flopped in the water. The impact was said to have looked so painful that on-site EMTs rushed to pull Eggert out of the pool. She was taken to a nearby hospital.
Luckily, she didn't break any bones, but doctors were concerned that she may have suffered internal injuries from the fall, monitoring her kidneys, specifically. Eggert was released from the hospital after only a few hours.
Beyond Eggert's accident, the show has taken a toll on its cast.

Splash contestant Rory Bushfield projects fearlessness on the diving board and on the slopes, but on the show this week the professional extreme skier exposes his vulnerable side as he opens up about the death of his wife, acclaimed freestyle skier Sarah Burke.
Burke, 29, died last January after a crash at the bottom of a superpipe during a training run in Park City, Utah. The couple had married in 2010.
"My life's changed drastically," Rory, choking up, says in a clip of the show (watch below). "I lost my wife. I had it all. I still have a lot. I'm thankful for everything I have,...

This week's eliminated contestant on "Splash" didn't get cut from the competition for failing to impress the judges. It was the end of the road for Kendra Wilkinson because she failed to dive. Period.
The theme was paired diving, and Kendra was paired with Rory Bushfield. He was a fearless athlete, while she suffered from a crippling fear of heights. It was a monumental achievement last week when she took inspiration from her son and actually jumped off the diving board. This week, host Joey Lawrence had to rush up the stairs as she started heading down.
"I wish I could do it for everybody," Kendra said. "I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry everybody."
She went a little deeper into what she was going through with E!Online. She said, "I start spinning, I start wanting to throw up, I'm shaking, my fingers wiggle -- It's like a real thing,...

"Splash," ABC's new celebrity diving competition, is all about celebs overcoming physical and mental limitations in order to be the best divers they can be. But on this week's episode, Playboy playmate and reality star Kendra Wilkinson threw in the towel.
This episode focused on synchronized partner dives. Wilkinson was paired with extreme skier Rory Bushfield, and the duo was set to do a partner dive that involved Bushfield holding Wilkinson while they flipped. Her crippling fear of heights became a major obstacle -- as did his health, since he ruptured an eardrum in practice and was advised by doctors not to dive.
He went against medical advice and decided to do the dive anyway, but when he and Wilkinson took to the board, she couldn't get past her terror. She stood on the platform, but refused to make the dive. "I'm so sorry, everybody," she said sadly. "This is...

Not all fears can be conquered. That was the lesson Kendra Wilkinson learned during Tuesday's episode of ABC's new reality series Splash, the diving equivalent of Dancing With the Stars. Because of her intense fear of heights, the Playboy playmate refused to dive, eliminating her from the competition. "I'm so sorry, everybody," Wilkinson said when she was unable to dive from the 23-foot-high platform. "This is the first time in my life I've quit something. This will haunt me for the rest of my life." Wilkinson was paired with extreme skier Rory Bushfield during the episode, which presented the celebs with a synchronized diving challenge. Prior to Wilkinson's...

The Taste wasn't exactly a ratings smash for ABC so how will Splash perform in the same timeslot? Will it be a surprise hit and run for many years or will it be cancelled after one season, like so many others? We shall see.
The first season of Splash typically airs Tuesday nights on the ABC network. The show pits celebrities Keshia Knight Pulliam, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Louie Anderson, Drake Bell, Chuy Bravo, Rory Bushfield, Nicole Eggert, Ndamukong Suh, Katherine Webb, and Kendra Wilkinson against one another in a high diving competition. It's hosted by Joey Lawrence and Charissa Thompson and judged by Steve Foley and David Boudia. Greg Louganis serves as the competitors' mentor.
Below are the TV show's ratings for the 2012-13 season, the best way to tell if Splash is going to be cancelled or renewed for a second season.

ABC's eclectic selection of celebrities faced their fears in the newest diving competition show. The premiere of "Splash" featured five of the ten contestants performing dives of varying heights and complexity. Easily the most passionate about the show was comedian Louie Anderson.
Louie was more than 400 pounds when training began, and suffered the embarrassment of not being able to get out of the pool after his first dive. On the show, though, he was a much more confident man. In fact, he was so confident that he made the last minute change to go even higher -- up to 23 feet -- surprising even his coach, Greg Louganis.
Louie talked about how the show was such a huge opportunity for him, and something that could save his life. Entertainment Weekly felt that he was taking the show more seriously than the show was taking him, and that his passion "has the...

Here’s the thing about Splash: It doesn’t actually make any sense. And that’s a compliment — if the show made any sense, it wouldn’t be any fun.
For the uninitiated, here’s what you must know: Splash is a new ABC reality diving competition wherein 10 stars train for six weeks and then, each week thereafter, perform at least one dive for a live viewing audience, two judges, and Joey Lawrence. The judges score the dives; the audience scores the dive. All the while, synchronized swimmers practice their synchronicity before commercial breaks. And at the very tip-top of the hour,...

When we first heard about ABC's "Splash," we had our doubts -- watching D-list celebs hop into a pool doesn't seem nearly as entertaining as watching them cha-cha. (And even the entertainment value of that is dwindling.) Tuesday's series premiere of the celebrity diving competition show was surprisingly compelling, though. London Olympic U.S. gold medalist David Boudia and Australian Olympic athlete and USA Dive team director Steve Foley were very dynamic judges, and because the show doesn't air live, there was room to create drama with editing.
First of all, we loved to hate the jingles for each of the divers -- particularly "The Cosby Show" child star's Keshia Knight Pulliam, whose jingle made sure to mention that she wasn't little Rudy anymore. Her dive involved a handstand on the board, but the judges weren't particularly impressed by it. "You had as much balance as a one-legged man at a butt-kicking contest,...

ABC's ballroom-dancing competition "Dancing With the Stars," which started a new season on Monday, March 18, is known for a fairly high rate of injury to participants, both celebrity contestants and professional dancers -- from pulled muscles to foot fractures to tendon tears.
But Joey Lawrence, star of ABC Family's sitcom "Melissa and Joey," who competed on "Dancing," says that risk is nothing compared to that faced by the contestants in "Splash," the new reality-competition show he's co-hosting for ABC.
"These are serious injuries," says Lawrence. "We have things going on I'm not going to tell you about, as these episodes roll out. But it is crazy stuff these people are experiencing."
Premiering on Tuesday, March 19, "Splash," based on a Dutch concept, pairs 10 celebrities with diving mentor and Olympic legend Greg Louganis, then has them compete in regulation platform and springboard diving in front of two judges: London Olympics gold-medalist David Boudia,...

Several personalities are taking a major plunge, to their own surprise as well as others'.
In January, Fox tried a celebrity diving special that -- pardon the phrase -- tanked, but ABC is forging ahead with a weekly variation. Premiering Tuesday, March 19, "Splash" is to diving what "Dancing With the Stars" has been to another pursuit, as several famous faces attempt challenging twists and turns after leaping off boards toward the water below.
The show's host -- multiple Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis -- and judges certainly know the sport, giving them a firm basis to gauge the efforts of competitors who include basketball icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, comic Louie Anderson, actor Drake Bell ("Drake & Josh"), extreme skier Rory Bushfield and Olympic-medalist soccer star Brandi Chastain (a late substitute for "Chelsea Lately" sidekick Chuy Bravo, who fractured his heel while training for the show).
Also competing are actresses Nicole Eggert ("Baywatch...

Take ten celebrities, put them in swimsuits, give them some training by a sexy Olympic legend and then make them dive into a swimming pool. There you have the basic concept behind ABC’s new reality competition series, Splash.
The reality competition series, which kicks off tonight, has celebs learning from the skilled prowess of Greg Louganis, the show’s Dive Master. But the hook of Splash is watching as the celebs – basketball icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, comedian Louie Anderson, actor/singer Drake Bell, comedian Chuy Bravo, reality star Kendra Wilkinson, actress Keshia Knight-Pulliam, skier Rory Bushfield, actress Nicole Eggert, Miss Alabama Katherine Webb, football’s Ndamukong Suh – grow (or not grow) as divers both physically and emotionally.
As you probably know, Louganis won Gold Medals in both 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games on both the springboard and platform events. He was diagnosed with HIV...

They’re finally here! The official cast photos for ABC’s celebrity diving show Splash have arrived, and they’re hotter than we could have ever imagined. Well, maybe not Louie Anderson…But Katherine Webb sizzles her two piece, as does Keshia Knight Pulliam.
Whatever happened to Little Rudy Cosby, huh? The cast is definitely not short of hotties. Former Baywatch Babe Nicole Eggert showed that she still knows how to tear it up in her trademark red one-piece, and Kendra Wilkinson reminds us that she was one of Hugh Hefner’s Girls Next Door. But it wasn’t just ladies. Buff dudes also made an appearance including Ndamukong Suh, Rory Bushfield and David Bouida brought a little something special for the latest. We can’t wait to see how well these celebs can jump when the show premieres on March 19th! For now check out some of the sexiest...

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Keshia Knight Pulliam Join Cast Of ABC's Celebrity Competition Show 'Splash'
And finally, ending the day with some totally non-essential news, comes word that former NBA legend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and former Cosby kid (although I'm sure she hates being called that) Keshia Knight Pulliam, have joined the cast of ABC's new celebrity competetion sports show Splash. The show, which is set to premiere on Tuesday March 19th at 8Pm (7Pm Central), features celebrities, including Chuy Bravo, Drake Bell, Ndamukong Suh, Rory Bushfield and Nicole Eggert, who will train and complete in regulation platform and springboard driving from extreme heights, in front of an audience and Olympic judges. To be honest, with the exception of Pulliam and...

The final two celebrities for "Splash" have been announced and you may be surprised -- one of them you wouldn't expect to see on a reality diving competition and one of them you've maybe never heard of.
NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and extreme skier Rory Bushfield are joining Ndamukong Suh, Katherine Webb, Louie Anderson and more as the celebrities competing in an Olympic diving competition on ABC for "Splash."
Abdul-Jabbar is the NBA's all-time leading scorer and towers over his "Splash" competition from a height of 7'2". Bushfield is a 29-year-old extreme skier who was married to Winter X Games gold medalist skier Sarah Burke until her tragic death in 2012 after a crash during a training session.
"Splash" premieres Tuesday, March 19 on ABC. Hopefully they're being safe -- Louie Anderson has already had to be rescued once.
