Neon, the indie studio behind “Parasite” and “Anatomy of a Fall,” has tapped the producers of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Jon Read and Allison Rose Carter, to lead their growing production arm. Read and Carter are the co-founders of Savage Rose Films.
The pact comes as Neon has moved more aggressively into developing and producing its own movies, instead of focusing purely on acquiring completed films. The company’s recent foray into production have included Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool,” Bishal Dutta’s “It Lives Inside,” Theda Hammel’s “Stress Positions,” Jazmin Jones’s “Seeking Mavis Beacon” and Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo.” This new in-house focus also includes upcoming projects from Joshua Oppenheimer, Boots Riley and David Robert Mitchell. Under the terms of the deal, Neon will have a first-look at Savage Rose Films’ roster of projects while Read and Carter will also run Neon’s productions, reporting to Jeff Deutchman,...

Bestselling author Stephen King gingerly stepped up to the witness stand Tuesday in a federal antitrust trial. Tracing his own history, he laid out a portrait of a publishing industry that has become increasingly concentrated over the years, while richly rewarding his creative endeavors.
“My name is Stephen King. I’m a freelance writer,” King said as he began his testimony as a witness for the U.S. Justice Department. The government is bidding to convince a federal judge that the proposed merger of Penguin Random House and rival Simon & Schuster, two of the world’s biggest publishers, would thwart competition and damage the careers of some of the most popular authors.
King has been published for years by Simon & Schuster. Some of his former publishers were acquired by larger ones. The 2.2 billion merger of Penguin Random House, the biggest U.S.

As the Justice Department bids to convince a federal judge that the proposed merger of Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster would damage the careers of some of the most popular authors, it is leaning in part on the testimony of a writer who has thrived like few others: Stephen King.
The author of Carrie, The Shining and many other favorites, King has willingly — even eagerly — placed himself in opposition to Simon & Schuster, his longtime publisher. He was not chosen by the government just for his fame, but for his public criticism of the 2.2 billion deal announced in late 2021, joining two of the world’s biggest publishers into what rival CEO Michael Pietsch of Hachette Book Group has called a “gigantically prominent” entity.
“The more the publishers consolidate, the harder it is for indie publishers to survive,” King tweeted last year.

Update: Penguin Random House’s proposed merger with Simon & Schuster will not drive down author advances and they will “continue to go up,” the attorney for the publisher said in opening arguments on Monday.
Dan Petrocelli, representing Penguin Random House, attacked the entire premise of the government’s case, arguing that it was relying on a definition of the marketplace for top selling books that “does not exist.” He argued that the DOJ “shrunk their case down to a tiny corner of the market,” while avoiding the impact that the merger would have on competition in the sale of books or even in the number of books that are published each year.
“The government has created an artificial market to create artificial concentration to create artificial harm,” Petrocelli said.
He said that the DOJ’s focus on the market for anticipated best sellers is not grounded in how the business works.

Federal antitrust enforcement has typically been considered through the lens of consumers. The logic goes, if a megamerger leads to lower prices and more choices, then it’s good for competition and good for the economy. Conversely, if it leads to higher prices and fewer choices, then it’s bad for competition and bad for the economy. Most deals authorized by the government have been approved under this view of antitrust law. However, that sole focus on consumer welfare is starting to change, which could be worrying news for Hollywood executives eyeing major deals.
In November, the Department of Justice sued to block ViacomCBS from selling its Simon & Schuster publishing unit to Penguin Random House, with a trial scheduled to start Aug. 1. The 2.18 billion deal would combine the world’s largest book publisher in Penguin and the fourth-largest U.S. book publisher in Simon & Schuster.
