All kids deserve a happy, healthy summer, but as communities continue to struggle with the effects of the pandemic, millions of children are at risk of hunger this summer. No Kid Hungry, a national campaign to end childhood hunger, is launching an awareness campaign to help families find free meals for their kids and teens this summer through a bilingual text service.
Parents, grandparents and caregivers can simply text “Food” or “Comida” to 304-304 to find sites serving free meals in their neighborhood. Chef Lorena Garcia, Ayesha Curry and Big Freedia are joining the effort as campaign ambassadors.
During the school year, kids can rely on school meal programs like breakfast, lunch and afterschool meals. But when school is out, many of those meals disappear, making summer the hungriest time of the year for kids and teens. This summer, rising food and fuel prices will make it particularly hard for...

Bravo’s Top Chef may have just wrapped up its eleventh season, but the popular reality cooking competition is about to get a Latino-themed makeover when Top Chef Estrellas premieres on Telemundo Feb. 16. And there’s more to the show than the lilt of Spanish to distinguish it from its English-language counterpart. The trailer for this incarnation of Top Chef promises “spicy new ingredients,” like a a blonde who seductively tears off her chef coat, a hunky guy who appears shirtless, and a handful of fully-made up Spanish TV stars who prance around in the kitchen in high heels.

It's been a strong season of "Top Chef Masters," but it all comes down to one winner. Ultimately it was all about the chef who took the bigger risks. And the distinguished chef-testant who can now call himself the Top Chef Master is: Chris Cosentino.
Cosentino wins a season full of fierce competition and big personalities. Lorena Garcia, Patricia Yeo, Takashi Yagihasi, Art Smith and Thierry Rautureau all left their unique marks in the kitchen even though they didn't make it to the finals. The season also benefited from a cleverly selected mix of guest stars -- including the hilariously idiosyncratic food musings from the likes of Holly Madison, the B-52s and Dita von Teese -- and challenges -- cooking at the Grand Canyon, a cook-off in a boxing ring -- that took full advantage of the Las Vegas locale.

Maybe Twitter should add a spoiler alert to Tom Colicchio's account. The "Top Chef" judge tweeted the results of last night's penultimate episode of "Top Chef Masters" immediately as the episode ended on the East Coast.
If you're planning to catch up on "Top Chef Masters" later, you'll probably want to stop reading now.
Colicchio tweeted "Congratulations to my friends Kerry Heffernan and Chris Cosentino for making it to the finale of Top Chef Masters" at 10:59 p.m. Et.
To which Bravo executive and "Watch What Happens" host Andy Cohen immediately replied: "Pst brother!"
Most entertainment sites, including Zap2it, try to be sensitive about spoiling reality show results on social media. In the age of timeshifting and DVRs, not everyone watches live. But Colicchio clearly was excited about the outcome. "Top Chef Masters" viewers know from an episode that aired earlier this season that Colicchio and Heffernan...

We recently reported that two of the three locations for Soul Daddy, the restaurant concept which won America's Next Great Restaurant, had closed after only a few weeks. Word was that all of the resources were being shifted to support the remaining restaurant in Minneapolis. Now this last location has closed as well.
A PR statement reads, "This was a difficult decision for us, as we wanted to see Soul Daddy succeed, but the restaurant simply was not performing as we had hoped. We'd like to thank all of the customers who tried our restaurants and the people who worked hard to try to make the restaurants succeed."
According to Portfolio's estimates, the failure cost more than $3 million. Chipolte Corp. put in about $2.3 million. Chipotle founder Steve Ells and his fellow judges/investors Bobby Flay, Lorena Garcia, and Curtis Stone supposedly contributed $220,000...

One of the greatest mysteries of America's Next Great Restaurant is exactly how much money the show's four judges actually invested in the restaurant, Soul Daddy, which just closed its final location after just two months. If Bobby Flay, Curtis Stone, and Lorena Garcia all invested the same amount of money as Chipotle founder Steve Ells, the answer is $220,000. Along with that, Chipotle gave $2.3 million to be the show's prize sponsor, meaning the...

NBC's recent reality series, America's Next Great Restaurant, wasn't a success in the ratings and was cancelled after one season. Fortunately, the TV series lasted long enough to to see a winner crowned on May 1st.
Jamawn Woods, the owner of a small Detroit catering business, won with his concept for a healthy soul food restaurant called Soul Daddy. As the prize from the show, Woods' eatery opened for business in three locations -- Manhattan, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis (in the Mall of America). Some of the investment money for the restaurants supposedly came from the show's judges -- Chipotle founder Steve Ells, and chefs Lorena Garcia, Curtis Stone, and Bobby Flay.
Now, it looks like two of the locations haven't lasted any longer than the seven episode series. Both the New York and Los Angeles branches of Soul Daddy have already closed, after...

We were big fans of the recent reality TV show America's Next Great Restaurant and were sad to see it end this past Sunday. But the best thing about the series is, it's the gift that keeps on giving. Because at the end of the road the winner received a restaurant chain with three locations, New York, Minneapolis and right here in Los Angeles. And so even before we knew who took top prize, we planned a pilgrimage to the eatery's opening day festivities on Monday morning.
It turns out our top choice was also the favorite of the judges — Bobby Flay, Curtis Stone, Lorena Garcia and Steve Ells. Soul Daddy was triumphant over Spice Coast and the Brooklyn Meatball Company. Creator Jamawn Woods started out his career running a chicken and waffles catering company out of his apartment and now he's a restaurateur. We...

One of the things that always made me resentful at shows like Top Chef is the fact that as the lowly viewer, I was never offered the privilege of tasting the winning dishes which so often look succulent and mouth-watering. Though America’s Next Great Restaurant, which concluded its finale on Sunday, is in the same vein as cooking shows like my beloved Top Chef, Angr had a different goal. Find a panel of experienced restauranteurs and celebrity chefs, introduce them to a bunch of people who like to cook, and see if you can produce a new chain restaurant capable of achieving Chipotle-level success.

"America's Next Great Restaurant" has crowned its first ever winner, Jamawn Woods. The reality show by NBC which is a cross between "The Apprentice" and "Top Chef" named Woods' restaurant Soul Daddy as the winner of first season on Sunday, May 1 finale.
Soul Daddy beat Brooklyn Meatball Company and Spice Coast in the final challenge which was made ala "Hell's Kitchen". The finalists were tested with actual diners giving reviews on their meals. Before the soft opening, the restaurateurs were to meet architects to discuss the dining area and design the company's logos.
The judges, including Bobby Flay, Curtis Stone, Steve Ells, and Lorena Garcia, agreed that Soul Daddy's concept of healthy soul food was a success. They thought Spice Coast's concept was too similar to Chipotle Mexican Grill, and Brooklyn Meatball Company made them wait too long for their food, causing a backup.
"This is definitely the biggest moment of my life.

It was between the Brooklyn Meatball Company, Soul Daddy and Spice Coast for the title of "America's Next Great Restaurant" on Sunday, May 1. So who went home with the title and the chance to run a three-location chain of restaurants?
That would be Jamawn Woods and his concept Soul Daddy, which specializes in healthy soul food. The investing team -- which is made up of Bobby Flay, Curtis Stone, Steve Ells and Lorena Garcia -- chose Soul Daddy as Spice Coast was pretty similar to Chipotle (Ells' company) and Brooklyn Meatball Company's service was backed up over an hour during the final challenge.
The final challenge kind of resembled "Top Chef's" restaurant wars with each contestant developing a soft open for their concept restaurant. The contestants met with arthitects to design the eating space and graphic designers for their logos. Several hundred customers tried out the food.

We’re sad that the show is already wrapping up, but we’re excited that the following day we’ll be able to scoot over to the Hollywood & Highland complex and enjoy the winner’s food. We’re hoping that winner is Sadhir Kandula of Spice Coast but we’d be happy to eat at Jamawan J. Woods’ Soul Daddy, too. Many TV critics have already harped on the American Idol judges this season. Their refrain: J.Lo, Steven and Randy are nothing more than paid cheerleaders, incapable of criticism. In their eyes, all of the Top 13 contestants were winners, and their performances have deserved nothing worse than a "that was kind of pitchy."
American Idol: What do the girls need to do to survive?
We agree, and would like to offer some advice by pointing to lesser-seen TV competition America's Next Great Restaurant, the NBC show in which the winner gets to open a new fast-casual restaurant chain. Seems to us, the Idol panel could learn a lot from the show's four judges Curtis Stone, Bobby Flay, Lorena Garcia and Steve Ells.

When NBC debuted its new reality series America’s Next Great Restaurant, gaydars went off for contestant Sandy Digiovanni. And rightfully so, Sandy says. "I’m in a plaid shirt! I’m the oldest dyke on a reality TV show!"
But since the show is about finding the next fast food chain that could rival the likes of Subway and Chipotle, there hasn’t been any talk of Sandy’s sexuality, until last week when she mentioned she once had to fire her own girlfriend.

NBC recently debuted a new reality TV show for Sunday nights, America's Next Great Restaurant, and paired it with the latest edition of Celebrity Apprentice. How is it faring? Will it last as long as Donald Trump's series or be cancelled after one season?

Those who are chosen go through various challenges and are mentored until a winner is chosen. The key to understanding America’s Next Great Restaurant is to realize that the title is an outright lie. The purpose of NBC’s new reality show isn’t to create a “great” restaurant — it’s to create a solid concept for a chain of restaurants, an idea that can be franchised up and repackaged throughout the country. Not for nothing does the show feature Steve Ells, the founder and CEO of Chipotle, as one of the main mentor/judge figures. Now, I love Chipotle. There’s one right down the street from my apartment, and I go there so...

For those not familiar with the term "fast casual," get ready to be beaten over the head with it. The prize for NBC's "America's Next Great Restaurant" is a three-market chain of restaurants. And if you think that means"fast food," Bobby Flay will come through your TV to set you right.
The pitch here is basic. It's the American dream, on a mass-production scale. A diverse group of would-be restaurateurs (many of them not trained chefs) present their business plan to a panel of food world judges, and they choose who has the most potential.
Where this show differs from other reality competitions, the judges are the ones actually investing. Flay, Curtis Stone, Steve Ells, and Lorena Garcia are all fronting their own money to fund the winners idea -- which will be executed in New York, Los Angeles and Minneapolis at the end of the season.

NBC's upcoming reality series, "America's Next Great Restaurant" isn't like other culinary competitions. The contestants aren't chefs so much as they are budding entrepreneurs.
The winner gets three locations of their own national chain, funded by judges Bobby Flay, Steve Ells, Lorena Garcia and Curtis Stone. It sounds sounds a lot like they're promoting fast food, but don't let them hear you say that.
"There's a food revolution going on in this country," Ells, who founded Mexican chain Chipotle, tells press at the Television Critics Association press tour. "People are really concerned about what they're eating. This notion of a fast casual restaurant is different from fast food... Fast casual brings real food and real cooking and adds convenience."
Still seems like a bit of a stretch for Flay, but the celebrity chef maintains that the series is in line with his ideals. "I think simplicity is the best," he says,...
