On a Saturday morning, Ayo Edebiri is discussing her first name. The restaurant required I put in my name for the breakfast order, a mundane request for most people but a potential point of distress for those of us with phonetically daunting monikers. The stakes are low if you’re a journalist but much higher if you’re a young actress and writer with one of the most electric careers of the moment — and a summer slate that’s poised to further cement her stardom. Ayo (Eye-oh) is a star of The Bear, FX’s restaurant-set dramedy that became a runaway hit last summer and returned for season two in June. She has film roles in Theater Camp, Bottoms and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem; makes a memorable appearance in the much-discussed first episode of Black Mirror‘s latest season, “Joan Is Awful”; and will join the Marvel Cinematic...

On June 17, Miranda Cosgrove broke the internet with one line: “You gotta switch it up on a bitch.”
Even though she’s currently 28-years-old, Cosgrove is — to many fans — eternally a child. First rising to fame as Summer in “School of Rock” and Megan in “Drake & Josh,” Cosgrove is nearly inseparable from Carly Shay, the titular “iCarly” character she played from 2007 to 2012, and now again in 2021.
It is perhaps for this reason that when Cosgrove cursed in the “iCarly” revival series’ third episode, fans stormed social media in delightful surprise, writing such tweets as “Hearing Miranda Cosgrove say ‘bitch’ in this iCarly revival is giving me life” and “Carly Shay Just Said Bitch! I Repeat, Carly Shay Just Said Bitch.”
But what might shock “iCarly” fans more is that the line was originally written as, “You gotta keep up with these hoes,” before it was struck down by Standards & Practices.

The writers of Paramount+’s iCarly reboot have come forward to defend cast members, including Laci Mosley, from racist attacks on social media.
“Hey #iCarly tweeps! I’m seeing a looooot of racist abuse being hurled at one of our stars,” wrote writer/co-producer Franchesca Ramsey, “& I’d love if you’d join me in calling it out it when/if you see it.”
“Recently…a number of people chose to express racism and, in some cases, harass beloved members of our cast,” another message on Ramsey’s Twitter account, attributed to the entire writing staff, read. “We unequivocally denounce all racist attacks, anti-Black language and hate speech in the strongest possible terms. iCarly is a joyous inclusive show meant to promote kindness (and the occasional prank). Harassment and white supremacist ideology have no place in our show or the discourse around it.

Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for its upcoming meta romantic-comedy “Isn’t It Romantic?” earlier this week. The movie stars “Pitch Perfect” breakout Rebel Wilson as a woman who hits her head and wakes up to find her life resembles a clichéd movie rom-com. Wilson appeared on “Ellen” to promote the trailer release, but she indirectly started an online controversy by claiming her movie is a Hollywood groundbreaker.
“I’m proud to be the first-ever plus-sized girl to be the star of a romantic comedy,” Wilson told Ellen DeGeneres.
Wilson was quickly met with backlash online for her comment, with many on social media reminding the Australian comedian of romantic-comedies starring Queen Latifah. Latifah starred opposite Common in the 2010 sports-driven rom-com “Just Wright,” and she played a woman who travels to Europe after being given a terminal medical diagnosis in the rom-rom “Last Holiday.” Wilson attempted to defend herself,...

A petition signed by Tina Fey, Samantha Bee, Michelle Wolf, Paul Haggis and 300 WGA members was delivered today to the managements of both Slate and Thrillist, urging the news websites to bargain in good faith for a new contract covering their writers and editorial staffs.
“As WGA members in scripted film and television, we stand in solidarity with our colleagues at Slate and Thrillist as they bargain their first union contract,” the petition states. “There is a long history of unionization across American media and entertainment industries because creative professionals deserve a seat at the table to negotiate just working conditions, livable salary minimums, fair raises, quality benefits and union security. We therefore call on Slate and Thrillist management to settle these contracts without further delay.”
WGA East president Beau Willimon hand-delivered the petition to Thrillist’s management at a bargaining session where he was joined by members of the Thrillist bargaining unit.

Maroon 5’s new music video for "Girls Like You" turns a spotlight on influential women across entertainment, activism, business and sports -- and naturally, the digital realm is well-represented.
In the minimalist clip, lead singer Adam Levine sings back-to-back with a slew of bold-faced celebrities as the camera revolves around them, revealing new cameos with every spin. Lilly Singh and Franchesca Ramsey -- who have both risen to renown on YouTube as much for their compelling content as their social activism -- can both be seen throughout the video busting some fairly impressive dance moves.

To be sure, the core of Viacom’s business remains locked in traditional TV and film. But with the coming-out party for the recently created Viacom Digital Studios, the conglomerate’s story is that it has a boatload of digital-first programming, partnerships and talent deals — designed to extend existing brands MTV, Comedy Central, Nick and Bet more broadly online across YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat as well as create new programming franchises.

Don’t let the title fool you: The Sundance Film Festival has been featuring television programs for years, be it the slew of documentaries that end up on HBO, Showtime, and Netflix or pilots that earn a special showcase like “Animals.” did in 2015.
But 2018 is special. This year, Sundance is dedicating an entire section to episodic programming, including short-form series, docu-series, traditional pilots, and more experimental premieres. It’s all coming together under the Indie Episodic banner, and it’s all designed with one clear mission:

At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.
The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.
This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...

At the inaugural Tribeca TV Festival over the weekend -- which will serve as a supplementary event to the flagship Tribeca Film Festival in April -- YouTube took the opportunity to showcase the work of its Creators For Change initiative during a premiere event moderated by bold-faced creator Todrick Hall.
Creators For Change was established last year and will see the video giant supporting a diverse array of YouTube stars -- led by ambassadors like John Green and Franchesca Ramsey -- who tackle social justice issues in their content. At the Tribeca TV Festival over the weekend, YouTube premiered three new videos from its first class of 27 Creators For Change fellows -- or emerging creators exploring issues like racism, religious discrimination, and xenophobia, Engadget reports. Given that YouTube has committed $1 million in equipment and production grants to fund videos that tackle social issues, this was just the tip of the iceberg.

Comedy Central’s latest development slate is diverse in more ways than one.
Not only has the cable network put together several new series with performers of color at the center, but the three shows picked up Tuesday by Comedy Central are all very different.
Ordered to series are the stand-up/musical show “The New Negroes,” the comedy game show “Taskmaster” and the scripted comedy “Corporate.” In development are shows from creators including Awkwafina, Neal Brennan, Arturo Castro, Franchesca Ramsey, Noël Wells and Flint Wainess, among others.
“The network when I got here was pretty traditionally targeted toward young white guys, both in terms of who the audience was and who was creating the shows for the audience,” said Comedy Central president Kent Alterman. “We started changing that a few years ago by expanding that into having funny women on the network, with Amy Schumer and Broad City and a lot more since.

As Women’s History Month comes to an end, VH1 is celebrating the achievements of black women in the world of comedy with a new documentary.
All Jokes Aside: Black Women In Comedy features a host of talented ladies—including Martin’s Tichina Arnold and Insecure‘s Yvonne Orji—discussing how they deal with racism, sexism and the lack of representation in the industry.
“As a black person, it’s hard,” Arnold says. “Black female comedians channel their anger through the comedy. We’re not complainers, which is why I think people put that ‘Angry Black Woman’ tag on us.

YouTube’s Creators For Change initiative, a worldwide program launched last September in which the video giant is tapping popular creators to serve as ambassadors about key social issues and allotting $1 million to fund content that aims to foster change, is expanding.
Today YouTube added five new Creators For Change ambassadors, including American YouTubers Franchesca Ramsey and John Green. In addition to Ramsey and Green, YouTube has also tapped All India Bakchod, a comedy collective; Indonesia’s Cameo Project; and Dina Torkia, a British-Egyptian beauty and fashion vlogger. Each of the creators will receive a $25,000 grant to use toward a social impact project of their choosing -- with Green already having donated his to the Vlogbrothers’ 10th annual Project For Awesome campaign.

Just three days after The Nightly Show‘s untimely end was announced, Larry Wilmore on Thursday kept things 100 one last time — with the help of a very special guest.
“It’s never easy when your TV show gets canceled,” Wilmore began, “but for me, there has been a silver lining: all the free booze! Samantha Bee’s show sent over some cases of wine, [and] Stephen Colbert sent an amazing assortment of liquor.” (Let’s just say The Daily Show’s half-hearted pastries weren’t as well-received.)

Tonight we’ll return to the seemingly never-ending sideshow that is our nation’s presidential campaign, but until then, let us talk Beyoncé and only Beyoncé. The black women of late night convened Monday to hash out the one thing you and everyone else on the planet have been talking about: Who exactly is buying all these Coldplay albums? (Aunts? Middle managers? Vice-principals?) No, they really discussed the political and racial implications of Beyoncé ’s Super Bowl halftime performance of "Formation." The Daily Show’s Jessica Williams analyzed the conservative response, particularly complaints that Beyoncé's statements on race tainted the hallowed American tradition of the Super Bowl. Keke Palmer joined Larry Wilmore and Nightly Show contributors Robin Thede and Franchesca Ramsey to scrutinize Beyoncé’s new, more overtly political artistic leanings. Eventually we as a society will agree that professional football is not worth the unavoidable traumatic brain injuries, and...

Now, she has landed a new gig that will bring her digital personality to television: She has joined Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore as a writer and contributor.
Wilmore announced The Nightly Show’s decision to hire Ramsey at the beginning of February. “We’re very excited to have Franchesca and her tremendous skill set join the show,” he said. “We were just going to hire her skill set, but we agreed to hire her as well. So it’s a win-win.”

Last week, YouTube noted that a trio of its creators would receive the chance to ask questions to the Republican presidential candidates during a debate on January 28th. Now, the video site has shared more information about its partnership with debate broadcaster Fox News, and among that information, it has revealed the three creators who will be featured on the upcoming broadcast: DIYer Nabela Noor, Soldier Knows Best host Mark Watson, and makeup expert Dulce Candy.
The three creators will gain a similar opportunity to the one Franchesca Ramsey, Connor Franta, and Henry Reich received during a recent Democratic-side tussle. Throughout the course of the upcoming debate, Noor, Watson, and Dulce will each get a chance to ask “a question on an issue that matters to them and their communities,” according to a Google blog post.
Google will also unveil several other features that will enhance the viewing experience for the Gop debate.
