Socially conscious hip-hop is back in style. At Sunday’s MTV VMAs, rapper Logic, singer Khalid, and their featured partner Alessia Cara performed suicide-prevention anthem “1-800-273-8255.” Ok, so the title’s not exactly catchy, but the point is for it to catch on. For the uninitiated, 1-800-273-8255 is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline‘s toll-free number. As if the song’s message wasn’t powerful-enough on its own, the speech Logic delivered afterward made sure there were no dry eyes at the Los Angeles awards show. The standing ovation the group received was well-deserved — even if...

As more and more statues of Confederate leaders come down across the United States, country music legend Charlie Daniels is speaking out about the movement — likening it to Isis’ demolition of historical sites in the Middle East.
“That’s what Isis is doing,” the 80-year-old Country Music Hall of Famer explained during an interview with cable network Newsmax TV on Wednesday. “There were pieces of history over there they didn’t like and they were taking them down.”
“Where does it go to? Where does it stop?” Daniels asked host Rita Cosby. “Is it going to be Robert E. Lee...

President Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to condemn the removal of memorials dedicated to Confederate leaders in the Civil War.
“Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments,” he tweeted Thursday morning. “You can’t change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson – who’s next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish!”
He continued, “Also the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!

Conservative YouTuber Joey Salads found himself in the crosshairs on Twitter this weekend, after a picture of him wearing a swastika armband was shared, along with his name, in a thread highlighting neo-Nazis who participated in the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The only problem: Salads was on vacation in Jamaica last weekend. Nonetheless, the 23-year-old Hollywood resident said he’s still dealing with the blowback from the false association of him with the white supremacist and neo-Nazi protests that led to three deaths and dozens of injuries — and widespread national outcry. If North Carolina and Mississippi’s anti-lgbt laws weren’t embarrassing enough, they’re now prompting travel warnings from other countries. On Wednesday, the United Kingdom issued a warning to citizens urging anyone traveling to those states to rethink their plans following newly signed anti-gay laws. “The U.S. is an extremely diverse society and attitudes towards Lgbt people differ hugely across the country,” the British government said on its travel advice website. “Lgbt travelers may be affected by legislation passed recently in the states of North Carolina and Mississippi.” Also Read: Stephen Colbert Mocks North Carolina Anti-lgbt Law With Gay Abraham Lincoln,...

The 1953 musical features Doris Day on whip-crackin’ form and golden tunes, but it can’t be completely reclaimed for progressive politics
Whip-crackin’, gun-totin’, suede outfit-rockin’ Doris Day is back in this hugely enjoyable 1953 musical now on rerelease, playing “Calamity” Jane Cannary (loosely based on the real-life frontierswoman): a gunslinger riding shotgun on the Deadwood stage in wild west Dakota, bringing in the mail and the fancy goods, while spraying the injuns with bullets and flirting with local legend “Wild Bill” Hickok, played by honey-voiced Howard Keel. She journeys to Chicago to persuade a famous singing star to come perform at the local theatre, but instead returns with an impostor, the star’s ambitious maid, Katie Brown (Allyn McLerie). Jane’s tomboyish style, plus the fact that she sets up home with Katie in her shack (with “Calam and Katie” on the front door), recently earned this revival a place...
