A 21-year-old Polish woman has gone viral after claiming to be Madeleine McCann, the victim of one of the most infamous child abduction cases of all time.
The woman, referred to as Julia Faustyna and Julia Wendell interchangeably, has posted a series of videos to TikTok and Instagram, explaining why she believes she is McCann – and she is willing to take a DNA test to prove it.
Madeleine was nearly four years old when she disappeared from the Portuguese holiday resort, Praia da Luz, in 2007. Her parents, doctors Kate and Gerry McCann, have been looking for her ever since.
Julia claims to not remember much from her childhood and that her parents avoided answering her questions. It was only after she began doing her own research and discovered Madeleine’s case that she “connected the dots.”

The Snow Girl is based on a 2020 novel by Spanish writer Javier Castillo. It tells the story of the abduction of a five-year old girl, Amaya Martín, from a crowded celebration for Twelfth Night. Twelfth Night is 5th January and it is the 12th day of Christmas, Christmas Day itself being the first (in case you ever wondered what the song or the Shakespeare play were on about). The Cabalgata de Reyes (Parade of Kings) is a Spanish festival held that evening that is especially popular with children, as during the colourful parade people playing the parts of the three kings from the story of the birth of Jesus hand out sweets to the crowd.
In 2010, it all goes horribly wrong for Ana and Álvaro when Álvaro briefly lets go of their daughter Amaya’s hand and Amaya disappears. The series follows the attempts of a young investigative journalist called Miren,...

It never gets easier. On May 3, Kate and Gerry McCann shared a heartbreaking " target="_blank">message about daughter Madeleine McCann, who disappeared exactly 15 years ago while the family vacationed in Portugal. "This year we mark fifteen years since we last saw Madeleine," they wrote. "It feels no harder than any other but no easier either. It's a very long time. Many people talk about the need for 'closure'. It's always felt a strange term. Regardless of outcome, Madeleine will always be our daughter and a truly horrific crime has been committed. These things will remain." The parents then thanked authorities in the United...

A suspect has been identified in the 2007 case of missing toddler Madeleine McCann. The Prosecutor's Office in Faro, Portugal, announced in a statement on April 21 that an individual has been made an official suspect by German authorities under the request of Portuguese officials, however, the suspect has not been named publicly and has not yet been charged. Madeleine disappeared on May 3, 2007 while vacationing in the Algarve region of Portugal with her family. She was only 3 years old when she went missing from her bedroom as her parents—Kate and Gerry McCann—dined nearby with friends. Authorities launched an international hunt for the...

Discovery U.K. is undergoing a major restructure that will see the company expand focus on streamer Discovery Plus, which was launched last year.
Discovery’s linear channel teams will be merged with those of the streamer — a move that could result in a 10% cull of its 100-strong U.K. work force. Should the headcount reduce, it is not immediately clear which departments will be affected.
The plans were revealed by Discovery executive VP James Gibbons in a virtual town hall with employees on Thursday.
As part of the restructuring senior VP and head of lifestyle and entertainment brands Clare Laycock will take additional charge of Discovery’s program planning, media planning, and audience measurement teams under the title senior VP planning, lifestyle and entertainment head of content.

The family drama/psychological thriller “Man in Room 301” puts forward an uncommon proposition for the Nordic crime genre. Commissioned by Finnish streamer Elisa Viihde, the six-part limited series was originally developed by U.K.-based Wall to Wall Media, which brought on actor and writer Kate Ashfield to develop the narrative back when it was still supposed to be set in England.
Ashfield stuck with the project after Warner Brothers Finland took the reins, teaming with director Mikko Kuparinen to shepherd this tense portrait of a family beset by grief. Taking place over two timelines, the series tracks the family fallout when a young boy is killed in 2007 and the clan’s suspicions when, on vacation in Greece over a decade later, they come to believe the boy’s killer is staying at the same resort.
Variety spoke with Ashfield about her work on the project.

Exclusive: Expectation, the UK production outfit behind Sky’s David Schwimmer comedy Intelligence, has secured its first Netflix original commission — a feature-length documentary on a series of nail bombings in London 20 years ago.
Titled The Nailbomber, the film will tell the story of how far-right extremist David Copeland detonated three improvised bombs in Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho over three weekends in 1999, killing three people and injuring 140 others.
Copeland, who loaded his devices with more than 1,000 four-inch nails, targeted London’s Black, Bangladeshi, and gay communities. He was convicted in 2000 and was given six life sentences in prison.
As well as sensitively exploring the atrocities themselves, The Nailbomber will also show how London communities bonded together to overcome hate. Netflix will premiere the film next year.

Hit series “Gangs of London” is getting a new U.S. home.
The Gareth Evans-created series, which is produced by Pulse Films in association with Sister, will move from WarnerMedia-owned Cinemax to AMC ahead of its autumn debut. U.K. broadcaster Sky Atlantic will remain the European home for the show.
The first season already aired on Sky Atlantic — the home of many co-produced originals and U.S. shows on Comcast-backed pay-tv broadcaster Sky — back in April. Alongside the first season debut on AMC this fall, it will also air on Sky in Germany and Italy this summer.
The move is not altogether unexpected. Cinemax, sister network to HBO, revealed back in January that it was going to move out of the originals space, and that the brand would not be transferred over to the HBO Max platform. Variety understands Pulse Films received HBO and Cinemax’s...

There are new developments in the investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance. On Wednesday, U.K. police announced via Twitter that they've identified a new suspect, 13-years after they launched their investigation into the then-3-year-old's mysterious disappearance. The authorities revealed that the individual is a 43-year-old German man who has connections to the Portugal region where she and her family were vacationing many years ago. According to the Met Police, the German national was traveling around Portugal in a camper van around the same time that Madeleine went missing from her parent's hotel room while they were mingling with friends at a local bar. London-based Pulse Films has built its business on a steady diet of slick rock docs by the likes of LCD Soundsystem and the Beastie Boys, music videos including Beyoncé’s transcendent “Lemonade” and Andrea Arnold’s feature film “American Honey.” As it readies for a transformative year, the Vice Media Group-backed outfit is rolling out its first major scripted series, Sky and Cinemax’s dizzyingly violent and stylish “Gangs of London.”
Pulse CEO Thomas Benski is as much a rock star as the veteran musicians he’s immortalized through his 16-year-old production company. The Brazil-born French executive, who works closely with creative partner and Pulse chief creative officer Lucas Ochoa, is synonymous with the edgy brand, whose early music docs have evolved into evocative non-scripted fare, including films on U.S. Army whistleblower Chelsea Manning (“Xy Chelsea”), nefarious hot yoga founder Bikram Choudhury (“Bikram”) and missing toddler Madeleine McCann.

Prior to the pandemic, London and Los Angeles headquartered production house Pulse Films was experiencing something of a golden period. Founded by Thomas Benski and Marisa Clifford in 2005, the company had three divisions firing on all cylinders: non-fiction had seen success with Netflix docs The Disappearance Of Madeleine McCann and Bikram: Yogi, Guru Predator; scripted took its latest feature, the Riz Ahmed starring Mogul Mowgli, to the Berlinale, and announced pics including the Nicolas Cage-starring Pig and the Olivia Wilde-directed Perfect; and commercials had locked numerous big commissions including with Apple and the coveted Christmas campaign for UK supermarket Sainsbury’s.
When we chat back in February about the company’s future, Benski is understandably in a bullish mood. “I would argue that we’ve built the modern day studio,” he proclaims confidently. “We really feel like this is our time, I don’t mean it in an arrogant way.

‘Murder Mystery’ (Photo credit: Netflix).
While Australians might like to think their tastes in movies and TV shows often are markedly different to Americans, that isn’t true when it comes to the most watched shows on Netflix.
There is a high degree of overlap between the two countries in the lists of the most popular titles of 2019 released by the streamer last week.
Murder Mystery, the feature comedy starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston was the top show while Michael Bay’s 6 Underground, an action thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, ranked second in Australia and third in the Us.
Stranger Things 3, The Irishman, The Witcher, Triple Frontier and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile also figured among the top 10 in both.

In disappointing news for fans of The Crown, Netflix‘s opulent drama about the life of Queen Elizabeth II, the show has failed to make the streaming giant’s top 10 most-watched series list for 2019 in the UK. You would imagine that if any market would be the core audience it’d be the United Kingdom, so given the massive budget of the show, this is likely to raise some questions over its future direction.

Netflix got in the end-of-year spirit Monday by sharing its own set of Top 10 lists for 2019, including its most popular titles that launched in the U.S. over the last 365 days, which is lead by the Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler comedy “Murder Mystery” and the third season of “Stranger Things.”
According to Netflix, its “most popular” domestic releases for the year are, in order, “Murder Mystery,” “Stranger Things 3,” “6 Underground,” “The Incredibles 2”, “The Irishman,” “The Witcher,” “Triple Frontier,” “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” “The Umbrella Academy” and “The Highwaymen.”
No viewership data was included with the list — which shouldn’t come as a complete shock, seeing as Netflix is famously selective about releasing numbers — but an individual with knowledge of the streaming service’s methodology tells TheWrap that the titles were ranked by the number of U.S. accounts that chose to watch at least two minutes of a series,...

Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston’s “Murder Mystery,” Beyonce’s historic “Homecoming,” Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Disney’s “The Incredibles 2” rank among the most popular Netflix movies of 2019, the notoriously ratings-averse streamer announced Monday.
Netflix has released a master list of its most-favored content in the United States, as well as individual rankings of films, original series, unscripted shows and comedy specials.
Following “Murder Mystery” as the year’s most popular film were titles including Michael Bay’s critically panned “6 Underground,” Pixar’s “The Incredibles 2,” Ben Affleck’s “Triple Frontier,” and Sony Animation’s Oscar winner “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
Viewership numbers were not disclosed, though in June the streamer tweeted that “Murder Mystery” had Netflix’s biggest opening weekend ever, with over 30 million accounts watching the whodunit around the world. A sequel is currently in development.

Netflix has provided a small insight into its most-watched shows of the year in Britain and beyond. While it did not publish any actual data, the lists provide an intriguing glimpse into viewing behavior on the streamer.
Originals TV shows including The Disappearance Of Madeleine McCann, Sex Education, The Witcher dominated the list of most popular releases in the UK this year, while The Irishman and Murder Mystery were among the films that featured.
But conspicuous by its absence was season three of The Crown, which did not make the list of most-watched releases, nor did it figure in Netflix’s rundown of its top series, where UK shows like Black Mirror and Top Boy figured.

Vice Media Group has all-but ruled out buying more production companies to bolster Vice Studios, as it focuses on achieving “organic” double-digit revenue growth at the content division in 2020.
In a wide-ranging breakfast discussion with journalists from the UK’s Broadcasting Press Guild on Thursday, Vice’s international president Dominique Delport said the focus is on hiring rather than buying talent.
“As long as we attract talent without having to acquire… I don’t think it would make a lot of sense [to acquire production companies],” Delport said in response to a question from Deadline.
He made clear that Vice will remain “opportunistic” if the right deal comes along, and the company has shown that it is prepared to part with cash to increase its scale after dropping $400M on digital publisher Refinery29 this month.
But for now, the focus is on existing production resources, with Vice Studios recently appointing Refinery29’s international chief Kate Ward as its president,...

It marks Netflix’s fifth most-watched list in the UK with the Svod service running the experiment on a weekly basis.
Last week, after its launch, the erotic thriller What/If popped in at fourth. The show stars Zellweger as a mysterious and manipulative businesswoman with a secret. It’s been exactly 12 years since Madeleine McCann, then just 3 years old, vanished from her British family’s vacation villa in the Algarve region of Portugal.

The case of Madeleine McCann and her kidnapping is something that’s been a bit of controversy that’s also been a true tragedy that has come close to polarizing many people when it comes to what happened and how it’s been handled. A new documentary coming to Netflix has come up with the idea that McCann is still alive and that her disappearance is still able to be solved. What seems a bit hard to stomach as well as accept is that this will feature the contributions from the former police chief, Goncalo Amaral, who previously claimed that McCann is dead,

The Madeleine McCann disappearance case has intrigued people across the world for more than a decade. When the 3-year-old girl disappeared while on a family vacation in Portugal, her family was immediately thrust into the spotlight. Madeleine's case is the subject of a new Netflix documentary, and is one of many true crime stories being highlighted in today's true crime boom, which is drawing attention back to her parents as well.
Madeleine McCann's parents are Kate and Gerry McCann, who both were doctors, according to Country Living. Kate also became an author in the years following her daughter's disappearance, writing a 2011 memoir about their experience entitled Madeleine: Our Daughter's Disappearance and the Continuing Search for Her. At the time of Madeleine's disappearance in 2007, the couple were both in their late 30s.
Four months after Madeleine's disappearance, news outlets around the world reported that Kate was named a suspect in Madeleine's disappearance.

It's one of the most distressing cold cases of the past several years: the vanishing of Madeleine McCann, a 3-year-old British girl who disappeared while on vacation with her family in Portugal back in 2007. The case was never solved and has been complicated by mishandled evidence, false leads, and shifting suspicions. As part of the recent resurgence in true-crime documentaries, Netflix has produced a new documentary exploring the case, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann. The documentary revisits several potential theories about Madeleine's disappearance, including some of the most widespread theories that have circulated in the decade since her disappearance. From the horrifying to the tragically mundane, here are five theories that attempt to explain what really happened on the night Madeleine disappeared.

Many recent true-crime documentaries have focused on violent crimes that made scandalous headlines in real life. However, Netflix's new documentary The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann tackles a different approach: it focuses on an unsolved disappearance from over a decade ago. Madeleine McCann was only 3 years old when she was presumably kidnapped from the villa where she and her family were staying on vacation. The case drew international attention, not just because of its tragic nature, but because of its international location.
The McCann family, who lived regularly in England, was on a spring break vacation in Praia da Luz, Portugal, a popular resort town in the south of the country, when Madeleine disappeared in May 2007. The town was especially popular among British expats and tourists, like the McCanns. They were staying at a privately owned apartment, 5A Rua Dr Agostinho da Silva, owned by a British landlord, that was...

As Netflix launches a series on the case of Madeleine McCann, how can we balance viewers’ appetites for the fast-growing genre against concern for victims?
Who is interested in true crime? “One imagines a furtive audience of sad saps and sadists, trench-coated lurkers and wan shut-ins.” So wrote Lorna Scott Fox a decade ago in an article for The Nation, which is quoted in Covering Darkness, Neil Root’s just-published exploration of the genre. They were both writing about authors of true crime books but the same could be asked of audiences for a new wave of television and film documentaries dealing with some of our grimmest cases.
The question is prompted by the launch of Netflix’s eight-part series, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann. It was preceded in the public eye by the Oscar-nominated short documentary, Detainment, about the two boys convicted of the murder of James Bulger, and...

With the 10th anniversary of Madeleine McCann's still unexplained disappearance re-rattling Britain in 2017, Chris Smith decided to dig in. "Coming into this, I had no idea how many people's lives were affected by this story," Smith, who most recently directed the cultural catnip that was Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, told The Atlantic. The result of two years of interviews, compiling archival footage, shooting reenactments and immersing himself in the media hysteria that ensued when 3-year-old Madeleine vanished on the evening of May 3, 2007, while her family was vacationing in Portugal unfolds starting Friday on Netflix in the eight-part docu-series The...

New Netflix documentary series “The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann,” about a missing girl whose case has sparked fevered speculation in Britain for more than a decade, is set to drop on the streaming platform Friday. The eight-part series is controversial and anticipated in equal measure, with the girl’s family suggesting it could hinder the long-running police investigation and a tabloid saying there could be explosive new revelations.
Three-year-old British toddler Madeleine McCann went missing from the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz while on vacation with her parents in 2007. Her disappearance sparked a huge investigation involving Portuguese police and Scotland Yard, which is still pursuing leads. It remains one of the highest-profile cases in modern U.K. crime history and the subject of intense media scrutiny, especially from Britain’s sensationalist tabloids.
The Netflix series promises new interviews with people connected to the case, with input from more than 40 contributors in all.

Netflix is reportedly getting ready to release a documentary about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann this month. While the streaming service has been silent about this project thus far, reports are now surfacing with the claims that Netflix could release this new documentary in March 2019. No specific date has been provided yet, but viewers have mixed reactions on the case. With the news that a documentary would reportedly be coming out on Netflix, the Daily Mail ran a report, claiming that her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have refused to participate in the documentary. Casey Anthony is changing her tune. The 32-year-old — who was famously acquitted of murder in 2011 for the death of her two-year-old daughter, Caylee — now says she wants more children. "For a long time she was like 'no way,'" a source close to Casey told People. "But time has changed that and she's now open to it in a way she hasn't been before." Back in 2017, however, she told the Associated Press she would be "dumb" to bring another child into the world. "If I am blessed enough to have another child — if I'd be dumb enough to bring another kid into this world knowing that there'd be a potential that some little snot-nosed kid would then say something mean to my kid — I don't think I could live with that," she said at the time. LouRee Gayler, the youngest of the bunch, was just 14 years old when she found out her mother served her pet rabbit for dinner. "I asked what's for dinner and she said chicken," LouRee said on the show. She remembered her mother and her second husband, Brian, just picking at their meals, "but she had a smile on her face the whole time,...

He's still holding on to hope. It's been 11 years since the disappearance of UK toddler Madeleine McCann, but her father Gerry still believes that his little girl is still alive somewhere out there. In a new interview with BBC 4, the surgeon said that he feels "confident" that his baby girl isn't gone yet. "I thought about it a lot early on and what I was absolutely confident about is whatever had happened, Madeleine was still alive and is still alive," the 52-year-old said. "That we could cope and she would be in the right place, that’s how I felt about it. And I have thought about it recently and I just want to hug her, and hold her, and cry a lot. How I would deal with that situation as it arose, I have thought at various points what it would mean." (Photo Credit: Getty Images) The father-of-three — he...
