Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, who first shared a stage in The Book of Mormon, will return to Broadway together this fall in Gutenberg! The Musical!, the Scott Brown-Anthony King musical to be directed by Alex Timbers.
The production, announced today, will begin previews Friday, September 15 at Broadway’s James Earl Jones Theatre, with an official opening on Thursday, October 12. The strictly limited 20-week engagement will play through Sunday, January 28, 2024.
“It’s been 12 years since I’ve been on a Broadway stage,” Gad said in a statement. “And after 12 years, the only person who would agree to take the stage with me again was my co-star from 12 years ago. I am grateful that Andrew Rannells said yes, because I really didn’t have the energy to do a one-man show.”

Broadway has just reopened after shuttering on March 13, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. To mark the return of the rialto, the 74th annual Tonys were handed out on Sunday, September 26 at the Winter Garden theater. This two-part ceremony, which will be hosted by six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald on Paramount+ and “Hamilton” star Leslie Odom, Jr. on CBS, comes almost one year after nominations were announced on October 15, 2020.
Two new musicals – “Jagged Little Pill” and “Moulin Rouge!” — lead the Tony Awards nominations with 15 and 14 bids respectively including Best Musical. A third tuner, “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical,” reaped a dozen bids as did the new drama “Slave Play.” While the nominees were decided by 48 theater professionals, the winners were voted on by 831 members of the Broadway community.

She’s here to remind you: Alanis Morissette’s ’90s cultural touchstone Jagged Little Pill is heading to Broadway. The new musical, inspired by the themes of Morissette’s album of the same title but with an original story by Juno writer Diablo Cody, is set to open in the fall. Diane Paulus (Waitress) will direct.
The musical — with songs from the catalog of Morissette, who does not appear onstage — premiered in a sold-out engagement last summer at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Ma. Casting for the Broadway production was not announced, nor was a theater or premiere date.
The Broadway staging was announced today by producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price.
In addition to Cody and Paulus, the creative team will include music by Morissette and Glen Ballard, with lyrics by Morissette. Movement direction and choreography is by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (the choreographer behind...

Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon will star in a Broadway revival this May of Terrence McNally’s Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, producers announced today. The production will be directed by Obie Award winner Arin Arbus in her Broadway debut.
The 16-week revival, described as a strictly limited engagement, will begin previews in May at a Shubert Organization theater to be announced. The engagement will be produced by Hunter Arnold, Debbie Bisno and Tom Kirdahy, and marks McNally’s 80th birthday.
First produced Off Broadway in 1987, McNally’s two-hander romance arrived on Broadway for the first time in 2002 in a production directed by Joe Mantello and starring Edie Falco and Stanley Tucci as the lonely waitress and short order cook whose one-night stand turns (possibly) into something more. Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer starred in the 1991 film version Frankie and Johnny.

Producer Ken Davenport has racked up an impressive collection of Tony Award nominations (and a couple of wins) for shows like “Once on This Island,” “Kinky Boots,” and “Spring Awakening.” But co-writing the book (with improv comedy group the Grundleshotz) for “Gettin’ The Band Back Together,” a musical about a 40-year-old Jersey boy who realizes his dream of starting a rock ‘n’ roll band, was surely a singular labor of love. At a recent preview, Davenport actually got up on stage before the show to tell us so, getting a big laugh by sharing the information that his Barry Manilow high-school tribute band called itself “The Barely Manilows.”
The writer-producer’s affection comes through in the show, which opens, appropriately enough, with a song called “Jersey.” “Perfect beaches and snow-capped hills / It’s like New York but you can pay your bills,” sing the hard-working chorus boys and girls, amusingly...

Middle-age urges to re-live old garage band pipe dreams are typically best kept to dank basements and sound-proofed garages, and Broadway’s Gettin’ The Band Back Together doesn’t exactly prove otherwise. Still, the playful musical is more infectious than you might expect.
Be warned, though: Enjoyment of Gettin’ The Band Back Together will be in direct proportion to a tolerance for not-so-young guys making guitar faces and devil horn hand gestures for two and a half hours.
The rock musical, which opens tonight at the Belasco Theatre, is an intentionally over-the-top tale in which newly jobless 40-year-old Manhattan stockbroker Mitch Papadopoulos (Mitchell Jarvas) moves back in with his New Jersey mom (Marilu Henner), meets up with old high school buddies, reunites with the girl who got away and, of course, lives out the musical’s title to win a local Battle of the Bands. Various homes are at stake,...
