The application of the death penalty in the sentencing of criminal cases has been an issue that continues to divide this country. A few months ago, at one of the many Gop presidential debates, the moderator noted the number of executions performed while Rick Perry was governor of Texas. This elicited gales of wild applause from the debate audience, while many pundits were shocked at the reaction. For his latest feature film documentary, director Werner Herzog traveled to that state to take a closer look at this divisive topic by focusing in on a horrific crime and the two young men who were brought to justice and met very different fates.

“Michael Perry, we would like to offer our condolences.” These are the first words of the “Into the Abyss” trailer, spoken by Werner Herzog to a young man about to be executed. Few things seem less comforting than the sound of Werner Herzog’s voice before death. But he can’t help it. That’s just how he sounds. While “The Interrupters” and “Bill Cunningham New York” each got a bump from last week’s Gotham Awards nominations, the stunning trailer for “Into the Abyss” has finally arrived. The fact that Sundance Selects agreed with Herzog’s request to distribute the film on November 11,…...

Here is the trailer for Werner Herzog‘s Into The Abyss where he takes a close look into the American judicial system, focusing on the murder case, trial, sentencing and execution of teenage boy Michael Perry. There is a full synopsis and trailer after the jump below. IFC is set to release Into The Abyss in theaters on November 11.
Legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man) returns with Into The Abyss, a riveting examination of a horrible crime which probes the human psyche to explore why people kill–and why the state kills. In intimate conversations with those involved, including 28-year-old death row inmate Michael Perry (who was scheduled to die eight days after his interview with Herzog), the filmmaker achieves what he describes as “a gaze into the abyss of the human soul.” As he’s so often done before, Herzog’s investigation unveils layers of humanity, making an enlightening trip out of ominous territory.

Werner Herzog's latest documentary made for a pretty heavy double bill with Paradise Lost 3 at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. Into the Abyss: A Tale of Life, A Tale of Death explores the death penalty as seen through the eyes of the various parties involved in a triple homicide in Conroe, Texas. One of the killers, Michael Perry, is on death row, while the other (Jason Burkett) is currently serving out a life sentence. Herzog makes it very clear that he doesn't agree with the death penalty, but the movie still remains relatively even-handed. The story is a powerful one and he treats it with the respect it deserves, even if he does chase down certain details that few other directors would take an interest in. The movie was funded by Investigation Discovery, which is where it will air after it gets a theatrical release this year courtesy of IFC Films.

Does a governing body have the right to decide if a criminal should be put to death for the acts that they've committed? It's a controversial issue and one that's held in just about every country around the globe from an objective perspective, but what is it like to see the world through the eyes of a person on death row? That's exactly what director Werner Herzog examines in his new documentary Into The Abyss. The first trailer for the film has been released on Apple. Check it out below and in HD over there. The documentary centers on a man named Michael Perry, a 28-year-old death row inmate who is eight days away from execution for his crimes: the murder of Sandra Stotler, 50, during a burglary in October 2001. Over the course of the film Herzog speaks with those involved with the case, including Perry himself, in an attempt to...

I imagine that most of our readers have strong feelings about the death penalty, one way or the other. It's not the sort of topic that leads to indifference. Whether you support or protest the right of a state to kill specific citizens that are convicted of heinous crimes, I expect there will be something in Werner Herzog's new movie to challenge your opinion. And what good is an opinion if it can't take a challenge? Into the Abyss: A Tale of Death, a Tale of Life is a documentary that follows the stories of a few death row inmates in Texas. Herzog talks to the inmates, and to some of the officers who investigated their crimes, as well as others who are involved in the lives and crimes of these inmates. By many accounts the film is a very even-handed look at those sentenced to die, and I...

After his 3D hit Cave of Forgotten Dreams this year, Werner Herzog is tackling the subject of death with his latest documentary Into The Abyss. Intending to “look into the deepest recesses of the human soul,” I thought it delivered on its promises when I saw it at Toronto this fall.
His exploration of humanity itself is easily one of the best documentaries of the year. It plays part murder mystery and part reflection on capital punishment. This first trailer via Apple brings up the heated issue a bit more heavily than it is actually explored in the film, but it is a worthy glimpse at what to expect. Check it out below.

Werner Herzog's new documentary Into the Abyss, which focuses on two inmates convicted of a violent crime, is now planned to be released in November of 2011.
The film was originally slated for release sometime in 2012; however, the ever passionate Herzog has become reportedly 'obsessed' over the subject matter of his documentary and wants it to see theaters immediately.
Into the Abyss documents the fallout from a brutal triple homicide that occurred in Conroe, Texas. Michael Perry and Jason Burkett murdered a 50-year-old nurse for her car, and then lured two other men out into the local forest to murder them as well. The killings were senseless, stupid, and quite certainly committed by individuals not deserving the fairer side of freedom, or even the grave.
Both men were convicted, with Perry receiving the death penalty and Burkett a life sentence. Into the Abyss is filled with interviews with both men,...

This year, they’re boasting quite the impressive line-up, with almost every title being a must-see. But here’s ten of the films I’m most excited to check out this year.
A Dangerous Method
David Cronenberg has never been a huge fan of holding back, and with his latest it can be expected that this trend will continue. It tells the story of the tumultuous relationship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, as a young woman seemingly comes between them. Judging by the director’s track record, and the subject matter being presented, this fare can be expected to be quite sensual.

I’m not exactly a cultist for David Cronenberg — I didn’t think A History of Violence was very convincing, or even that The Fly was a great horror film — but I was primed, in Toronto, to see A Dangerous Method, in which Viggo Mortensen plays Sigmund Freud and Michael Fassbender plays Carl Jung. Keira Knightley — yes, Keira Knightley — plays the sexed-up, tormented Russian Jewish hysteria patient-turned-psychoanalyst prodigy who comes between the two of them. When you consider that Freud and Jung, along with Einstein, were arguably the most influential thinkers of the last hundred years, there have been precious...

I’m not sure Werner Herzog, Jean-Luc Godard or even Errol Morris would agree the role of film is to expose the truth. The truth varies. The truth is not on trial here. The facts of a triple homicide are laid out in the first of the film’s chapters: in 2002 in Conroe, TX two young man Michael Perry and Jason Burkett shot a nurse Sandra Stotler, her son Jason, and her son’s friend Arnold Richardson over a sports car. There is little doubt, although the destiny of Burkett, whose brother and father are also serving time, seems to be written before he was born. Another destiny written is that of Perry, who speaks to the filmmaker behind glass, eight days before his execution.

Werner Herzog is an incredibly prolific filmmaker. This man makes inspiring documentaries faster than I cook meals (seriously, an hour and a half to cook a Spanish Omelette. I only wish I were joking). Into The Abyss: A Story Of Life, A Story Of Death, is yet another in a long line of compelling films about less than ordinary subjects, given what I like to refer to as “The Herzog Flare”.
Herzog joked before the film started that technically “Into The Abyss” could have been the title of any of his documentaries, and he’s certainly right there. His documentaries have a way of transcending the surface of the issue and always come out as rather profound, something many filmmakers wish they were capable of.

"Into the Abyss, [Werner] Herzog's latest extraordinary documentary, looks at first like the kind of true-crime shocker you can easily find on cable television," writes Ao Scott. "It explores a particularly senseless triple homicide that took place in Conroe, Tex., a decade ago, and consists almost entirely of conversations with people close to the killings, including Michael Perry, who was convicted of killing one of the victims. He is interviewed as he awaits execution, and the ethics of the death penalty, which Mr Herzog avowedly opposes, is among the film's concerns. But Into the Abyss — which, Mr Herzog noted as he introduced a screening of it, 'could be the title of quite a few of my films' — is less a piece of political advocacy than a somber inquiry into familiar Herzogian themes of death, violence and time."

Telluride 2011, Day 2
The most perilous and difficult aspect of attending Telluride – whether you’re a passholder, a guest, a sponsor, or a ticketholder – is going to the bathroom. Really. Because the great majority of the fest’s venues are assembled specifically for the event, some of its facilities are ill-equipped to deal with hundreds of rabid moviegoers who’ve been specifically instructed to stay hydrated to stave off altitude sickness. As a result, the lines are long – but as the fest’s employees are quick to reiterate, waiting in line is the second-greatest thing to do here. That’s not spin: because there seems to be no such animal as a casual Telluride-goer, nearly every attendee has a story to tell, a great movie to recommend, or a questionable opinion they feel very strongly about.
On the subject of non-casual entites, Today’s Symposium schedule included two potentially incredible speakers: Wim Wenders and Werner Herzog.

Franklin Leonard, now an executive at Universal, released the 2009 edition of his compendium of the "most liked" screenplays of this past year Friday morning. Leonard's annual survey of industry friends and contacts began five years ago and typically arrives in e-mail boxes just before the holidays (it began because he wanted some good scripts to read over vacation.)
At the top is Christopher Weekes' "The Muppet Man," about Muppet creator Jim Henson, which the Henson Co. is producing. Repped by Wme and Circle of Confusion, Weekes is still relatively new to the writing game.
Second is veteran Aaron Sorkin's screenplay for "The Social Network," the Facebook origin story that David Fincher has been filming for an October release from Columbia. Another Wme client, Sorkin has high-profile scripts for Columbia's "Moneyball" and DreamWorks' "The Trial of the Chicago 7" in development.
