Capa and Taro lived, loved and died on the frontline, becoming the most famous war photographers of their time. As a new novel about them is published, we explore their real relationship
It begins with a photograph. In 1934 a struggling Hungarian photographer, André Friedmann, living in exile in Paris, is commissioned to take publicity pictures for a Swiss life insurance company's advertising brochure. On the lookout for potential models, he approaches a young Swiss refugee, Ruth Cerf, in a café on the Left Bank and convinces her to pose for him in a Montparnasse park.
Because she does not entirely trust the scruffy young charmer, Ruth brings along her friend Gerta Pohorylle, a petite redhead with a winning smile and a confident manner. So begins the most iconic relationship in the history of photography, and an intertwined and complex story of radical politics, bohemianism and bravery that, in the intervening years,...

Diane Kruger is stepping in to replace Eva Green in Benoît Jacquot’s adaptation of Chantal Thomas’ novel, Farewell, My Queen, reports The Playlist. Kruger joins Léa Seydoux and Gérard Depardieu in the film, and will play Marie Antoinette, with Léa Seydoux as a reader to her royal majesty during the final days of the French Revolution.
The film plans to revolve around this synopsis taken from the book of which it is based. As revolution rages outside the palace walls, inside the court of Versailles–the court of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI–denial reigns before giving way to alarm, which in turn degenerates into panic and chaos. Thomas spins the familiar events of the 1789 French Revolution into a compelling novel, with the central character less the famously ill-fated queen than the insular and ritualized society of the palace. The story is told by a woman looking back 30 years,...

How do you generate buzz for your low-budget film? Put Total Film’s “Hottest Actor” and “Hottest Actress” of 2010 in the lead roles. That’s how.
And that’s exactly what Michael Mann plans to do by casting Andrew Garfield and Gemma Arterton as the stars for his new film “Capa,” Collider reports.
Based on Susana Fortes’ award-winning novel “Waiting for Robert Capa,” the story follows the romance of war photographers Robert Capa and Gerda Taro, who met in Paris in 1935.
Both were young, beautiful and had everything in life (seeing any similarities with the slated actors yet?)—but they put it all at risk by traveling to Spain to document the Spanish Civil War.
Garfield is undoubtedly the man of the hour after delivering lauded performances in “The Social Network” and “Never Let Me Go,” and catching the lead of “Spider-Man,” while Arterton is riding high after her roles...

According to a recent profile interview in Total Film, Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) will be joining Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) in Michael Mann's Waiting for Robert Capa. This is the first we've heard of any kind of casting for the film, but Arterton seems quite convinced telling the film mag, "I'm aiming for even more diversity. Capa [biopic about the combat photographer Robert Capa] is confirmed, so I should be working with your hottest actor, Andy Garfield!"
