As ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” continues to be hailed as a revelatory comedy series that puts classic networks back on the TV awards map, attention should also be paid to the other great non-streaming sitcoms of its age. Take, for instance, “American Auto,” which, after two strong seasons, has proven a worthy successor to past NBC workplace comedies like “The Office” and “Superstore.” At a time when increasingly dark dramedies dominate much of the television landscape, it’s important to keep part of the spotlight on feel-good laffers, and “American Auto” stands as proof that there is more than one such model on the lot.
“American Auto” primarily takes place in the Detroit corporate offices of fictional car company Payne Motors, which has recently fallen under the control of ill-equipped CEO Katherine Hastings (a perfectly cast Ana Gasteyer). With each passing episode, her central goal of at least keeping pace...

NBC has yet to make decisions about three of its comedies.
American Auto, Grand Crew and Young Rock all remain on the bubble after the network unveiled its fall schedule with these three shows absent from fall and midseason.
NBC said “decisions are yet to be made” on the trio.
American Auto comes from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer. The series premiered its second season in January and it ended its 13-episode run in April.
Starring Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer and Jon Barinholtz, American Auto hails from Spitzer and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Written by Spitzer, American Auto is set at the headquarters of a major American automotive company in Detroit, where a floundering group of executives try to rediscover the company identity amidst a rapidly changing industry.
Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo also star.
Spitzer executive produces via his Spitzer Holding Company with Kapital’s Kaplan.

Hackers seem to be getting the upper hand more and more these days and the fictitious Payne Motors on NBC’s “American Auto” is no exception. In the episode that airs Tuesday, the automaker’s servers get hacked, causing chaos that gets even crazier when Wesley is locked out of his bank account “forever” and Katherine (Ana Gasteyer) learns they accessed some naughty photos of hers.
Katherine and the team are told the company’s server was hacked and the culprits got a small amount of data. To get back on track, everything has to go offline, causing pandemonium to erupt. Check out the exclusive clip above.
“I doubt it’s exactly ‘easy’ for anyone to hack a major corporation like this, but we usually only become aware that someone was trying to hack us when the hackers succeed,” executive producer Justin Spitzer told TheWrap. “Being in entertainment, we talked...

In Sunday’s NCIS: Los Angeles opening sequence, a thrilling Top Gun-style F-35 Navy training exercise turns into a nail-biter as a plane gets in trouble and the pilot ejects. Turns out it’s Special Agent Sam Hanna’s (LL Cool J) son! Aiden (Tye White) survives, much to the relief of his dad and grandfather, Raymond (Richard Gant). But “he gets his bell rung pretty hard,” says the drama’s executive producer R. Scott Gemmill. And the crash could be a career-ender: All signs point to pilot error. “Aiden has a reputation as a hot dog,” Gemmill adds. “He’s been reprimanded for his flight behavior.” With the NCIS team put in the awkward position of investigating the incident, Sam is barred from participating. Meanwhile, the trio of tough military Hannas grapple with what happened. “It’s a lot of stubbornness in one room,” Gemmill says. “There...

Save Hetty! In the military drama’s Season 14 opener, intel has at last confirmed the location of the former boss lady (Linda Hunt): Syria. “It starts off very bad for her, but eventually [the info provides] a little bit of hope,” NCIS: Los Angeles executive producer R. Scott Gemmill says. The news fires up Special Agent G. Callen (Chris O’Donnell) to go rescue his imperiled surrogate mother, despite their unresolved issues about his childhood spy training. Admiral Kilbride (Gerald McRaney) nixes the plan, though: He needs all hands on deck after terrorists set off an explosion at a facility that manufactures Navy drones. That’s just the first big boom. “American Auto” has been renewed for its second season at NBC.
From “Superstore” creator Justin Spitzer, Season 1 of “American Auto” debuted in December 2021. The series is a workplace sitcom set in Detroit, where Payne Motors has just hired Katherine Hastings (Ana Gasteyer), its first female CEO, who found huge success in big pharma but doesn’t know the first thing about cars — not even how to drive them. Katherine and her team of executives must work to adapt to the changing times or be sent to the junkyard.
Harriet Dyer plays Payne’s chief communication officer Sadie, Katherine’s right-hand woman who constantly saves Katherine from herself. She also struggles to fight her feelings for Jack (Tye White), a Payne assembly line worker she had a one night stand with who Katherine suddenly promoted to the corporate office, making him impossible to avoid. NBC has picked up a second season of comedy series American Auto, Deadline has learned. We hear the order is for 13 episodes.

Chicago – Jon Barinholtz keeps on rolling. After having wrapped a six season run on NBC-tv’s “Superstore” portraying Marcus, he landed another role – with the same sitcom creator (Justin Spitzer) and network – as car industry executive Westey Payne in “American Auto,” which premiered last month. And all this as he co-created “Chicago Party Aunt” for Netflix.
As opposed to to “Superstore,” where the focus was on the store level employees, “American Auto” is a workplace comedy that takes place in the executive suite. Ana Gasteyer (“Saturday Night Live”) portrays Katherine, a hard charging just-appointed CEO of Payne Motors. Barinholtz as Wesley Payne is part of the family who owns the company, and they interact with put upon VP Sadie (Harriet Dyer), Dori (X Mayo), Cyrus (Michael Benjamin Washington) and newly promoted Jack (Tye White). The quick-witted sitcom takes place as the company is in transition.

You think your job leaves something to be desired? Try being a teacher at Philadelphia’s chronically underfunded Abbott Elementary, or putting out corporate dumpster fires in the mercenary executive offices of the Detroit-based American Auto. These workplace sitcoms couldn’t be more different socioeconomically, but each shines humorous light on the human condition as they confront adversity weekly. Or inhuman, in the case of American Auto, which was created by Superstore‘s Justin Spitzer as the flip side to his enduring comedy about frontline workers subjected to the remote whims of higher-ups. “How do we actually put a price on people dying?” wonders Jack (Tye White), an empathetic everyman who in the pilot episode (which aired in December) was impulsively promoted from the assembly line to the C-suite of hapless automaker Payne Motors by incompetent new CEO Katherine “I’m not really that into cars” Hastings, a role that...

Saturday Night Live alum and all-around scream Ana Gasteyer takes the wheel as the new CEO of a struggling car manufacturer in American Auto, NBC’s new top-of-the-line comedy from exec producer Justin Spitzer (Superstore). One thing slowing down her driven Katherine Hastings: She doesn’t know a driveshaft from a dipstick! Having come to Detroit’s Payne Motors from the world of Big Pharma, “she is probably more dependent on everybody in the workplace than they even know,” says the actress. Her blind spot becomes evident this week when Katherine’s first earnings call with the board fails to rev up her team (Superstore fan favorite Jon Barinholtz and The Daily Show’s hilarious X Mayo play two of them), which has recently been injected with “everyman” input from promoted factory worker Jack. The series gets good mileage out of this vibe of inclusion, adding sharp writing and a dash of corporate America commentary.

After the rush of holiday specials and prestige movies that define December, January entertainment can often feel like a bit of a letdown. That it’s traditionally been a dumping ground for iffy-looking movies and a bit of a dead zone for new TV shows hasn’t helped its reputation.
But release patterns have changed drastically over the past few years (and even more drastically during the pandemic). Even in the worst of years there’s always something worth seeking out, and this doesn’t look like a bad year...

Ana Gasteyer — a shrewd, funny comedian adept at puncturing her characters’ pretensions — has long deserved a showcase. “Saturday Night Live” contemporaries of hers including Maya Rudolph and Molly Shannon have recently had strong and striking second acts on TV, and Gasteyer’s turn comes in the form of “American Auto,” a sitcom about a car company and its self-assured new CEO.
And it’s Gasteyer who represents the most compelling reason to watch this show, which over its first two episodes is in the process of finding its voice. Created by “Superstore’s” Justin Spitzer, “American Auto” most keenly gives the sense of a network attempt to channel the scabrousness of “Veep” or “Succession.” Like those shows, this NBC series features a bunch of functionaries striving for the approval of a capricious and often short-sighted leader. But the early going suggests a show that is still figuring out what it wants to say.

Coming off a five-year run as writer-producer on NBC’s The Office, Justin Spitzer in August 2013 sold another single-camera workplace comedy, American Auto to NBC, with a put pilot commitment. The script did not go to pilot, and Spitzer went on to create Superstore. After he stepped down as Superstore showrunner in summer 2019 to focus on development under his Universal TV overall deal, he took a new stab at American Auto, which was redeveloped and went to pilot — and then to series — at NBC.
The comedy, starring Ana Gasteyer, Jon Barinholtz, Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo, is set at the headquarters of a major American automotive company in Detroit, where a floundering group of executives try to rediscover the company identity amidst a rapidly changing industry. During a virtual TCA panel for the show, Spitzer spoke about American Auto‘s origins, and how...

NBC is planning ahead.
The network announced Tuesday that it had picked up three new shows from Universal Television – comedies Grand Crew and American Auto, and drama La Brea”for the 2021-2022 season.
Lisa Katz, who was recently named President of Scripted Content, made the announcement:
“Our driving force has always been to seek out talented storytellers who have a strong point of view,” Katz said.
“While these shows are very different thematically , what they have in common is a unique voice, excellent world building, and compelling storytelling. We can’t wait to share them with TV fans everywhere.”

When part of the family find themselves in an unexplainable primeval world, alongside a disparate group of strangers,...
