Who would have thought that a superhero series could look like a mix of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? It would seem that in the superhero world, where the game was turned upside down many years ago by Daredevil and Jessica Jones, nothing could surprise the viewers.
But there is a man named Noah Hawley, who has already managed to turn the near-perfect Coen Brothers movie Fargo into an excellent modern series of the same name. But Hawley didn't stop there – he made a show from the X-Men universe that doesn't play by the rules of the genre, and follows its own strange logic.

This review contains spoilers for Marvel’s Moon Knight
Marvel’s Moon Knight isn’t lacking in story. Arguably, it has too much story for its own good. In the first three episodes alone we were introduced to a mentally unwell ex-mercenary with a murky past estranged from a wife he’s been lying to for years. Inside him is at least one identity (with another on the way) created to fill a role that the main identity is unable to. We’ve also been told that the central identity is in fact the earthly avatar of the moon god Khonshu. We’ve met an ex-avatar-turned-cult leader with a grudge who is intent on raising hell in the desert, and a group of ancient Egyptian gods who are apparently too ignorant to take more than a passing interest in the entire situation. And that’s before you get to the...

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe grows, it gains opportunities to include some in-universe Easter eggs to make its continuity feel more lived in. The most recent Marvel TV series for Disney+, Hawkeye, goes so far as to include a full-blown Broadway musical featuring the exploits of that world’s Avengers. But while Rogers: The Musical is a fun extra feature for fans to pore over, there’s another Marvel property from the recent past that understands the power of good old-fashioned singin’ and dancin’ more than any other superhero project.
FX’s Legion, which first premiered five years ago today, exists outside of the Marvel continuity…like way, way outside of it. This series borrows some of the X-Men characters owned by Fox at the time to present a trippy, auteurist vision from Fargo creator Noah Hawley.
Anybody who tells you that they understood everything that happened in Legion is lying.

Photo: 'Legion'/FX In 2017, Noah Hawley took a break from focusing on his hit crime drama television series, 'Fargo', in order to groom a new kind of superhero show for the world to experience. 'Legion' was Hawley's attempt at not only tackling the superhero genre, but experimenting on it as well, challenging some of the genre's formulaic habits to test and expand the boundaries of its creativity. 'Legion', which aired on FX, the same network that also proudly broadcasts 'Fargo' like a talented child it can't stop talking about, was based on the Marvel character of the same name. It was produced through the FX network and Marvel television studios, and centered around David Haller; an extremely powerful mutant from the X-Men universe who struggles with the deadly combination of mental illness and superpowers. It would be foolish to expect Marvel Studios to omit Charles Xavier and Magneto from the upcoming X-Men reboot entirely because the characters are so vital to the mythology, but it would be equally wise to veer as far away from how they were depicted in the Fox franchise as possible. Of course, they’ll need to retain their signature personality traits otherwise they won’t resemble the characters at all, but actively avoiding any scenes of them playing chess would be much welcomed.
Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are all fantastic actors that did great work in the respective roles over the course of two decades, and even though we won’t be seeing the mutants on the big screen again for a while yet, there’s already been plenty of speculation about who could end up leading the warring factions into battle in the McU.

A few weeks ago, Dan Stevens teased the possibility of a sequel to Adam Wingard’s 2014 picture The Guest. The cult favorite was recently added to Netflix, and is well worth a watch for anyone wanting to see Stevens as a U.S. soldier who unexpectedly turns up at a family’s home. The actor doubled down on his interest in a follow-up to The Guest in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter this week, albeit while still noting that his collaborators are pretty busy right now.
Stevens had this to say about the prospect of working with Wingard and writer Simon Barrett again:
“Well, I suppose it starts with Simon (Barrett) and Adam (Wingard). Unfortunately, Adam is a little busy with [Godzilla vs. Kong] at the moment. But we’ve all sort of been looking at ways we can get back together in some way, and I think it will happen as...

(Warning: The following story contains spoilers from the Season 3 premiere of FX’s “Legion”)
David Haller (Dan Stevens), already one of the most powerful mutants on the FX show “Legion,” just got a bit stronger courtesy of his new time-traveling friend, Switch (Lauren Tsai). Showrunner Noah Hawley tells TheWrap her abilities, and more importantly, what David plans to do with them, will be a major factor in concluding the FX show’s three-year story.
“For David, who really feels like his life was ruined when he was a baby and he never had a chance, there’s nothing he can do in the present moment to make his life better,” Hawley told TheWrap. “He tried to have his love story [but] he messed it up. He tried to go off and start his commune and they came looking for him.”

In between directing his feature film debut Lucy in the Sky and ramping up the fourth season of Fargo with Chris Rock along for the ride, Noah Hawley somehow found time for yet another journey: one last trip through the mind of David Haller, the overpowered telepath at the heart of FX's Legion, based on Marvel's relatively obscure X-Men comic book of the same name.

For any fan of ambitious storytelling, space dramas, or, well, Natalie Portman, “Lucy in the Sky” is high on the list of the year’s most-anticipated films. The good news about Noah Hawley’s space drama is it’s just about ready to go. The better news is that Fox Searchlight is targeting the fall festival circuit for the film’s debut.
“The movie is locked,” Noah Hawley told IndieWire in a recent interview. “I’m mixing right now, and I’m doing the final finishing touches. The studio has their strategy that they’re building toward a release, and it’s Searchlight, so unlike Disney, which dates their movies three years in advance, they’re quite used to going out [to festivals]. And all those festivals that are in anticipation of fall are starting to look at movies now, so we’re going through that process to figure out the best strategy to release it.

Welcome to “TV Take,” Variety‘s television podcast. In this week’s installment, Variety’s executive editor of TV, Daniel Holloway, chats with Noah Hawley, the creator and showrunner of FX’s X-Men inspired drama “Legion.”
Centered around the Marvel Comics character David Haller (Legion), the series follows the schizophrenic young man, played by Dan Stevens, as he hops around psych wards and ultimately falls in love with a fellow psych patient Syd. Early in the first season, Syd helps Haller realize that the voices he hears may not all be the cause of his mental illness but may actually be those of a parasitic mutant named Shadow King trapped in his own mind. With this new knowledge, the 30-something year-old Haller is propelled into a a series of dramatic turns as he attempts to combat the villain taking over his body.

FX’s “Legion” has always drawn inspiration not only from the Marvel “X-Men” comics on which it is based, but also from the weirder corners of pop culture. When creator Noah Hawley cast “Downton Abbey” star Dan Stevens as the lead — David Haller, a mutant whose telepathic powers have been misdiagnosed as mental illness — he gave the actor a playlist that included everything from experimental noise music to Pink Floyd. Even more so than Hawley’s “Fargo,” “Legion” has been driven by a visual aesthetic that reflects that range of influences.
As such, the choice of whom to bring aboard as production designer for the show’s third and final season, which premieres June 24, was an important one. Hawley turned to Marco Niro, fresh from the first season of FX’s motorcycle-gang drama “Mayans M.C.”

Dan Stevens said his powerful, telepathic mutant Legion would do some serious damage if he ever crossed over from the eponymous FX series into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Legion would wreak havoc. He’d probably take on Thanos, let’s see that,” he told Variety on the red carpet at the premiere of the trippy, mind-bending superhero series at the ArcLight Hollywood.
After the Disney-Fox merger, the X-Men seem poised to join the McU. Stevens said he wouldn’t turn down an appearance in a movie if the opportunity arose.
“‘Legion’ occupies a very odd little corner of the Marvel universe,” he said. “I would never presume to stampede into that arena, but a weird, little cameo might not do any harm.”
Stevens will say goodbye to David Haller, one of the most powerful mutants in history — who is also schizophrenic and delusional — on the upcoming third and final season of “Legion.

There's no time like the present. Or the past. Or the future.
FX has released a new totally far out trailer for Legion Season 3 and it’s all kinds of kinds of wild and crazy! If you’re a fan of this insane X-Men series, then I’m sure you’re going to love what you see in this new footage.
The final season of the series looks like it’s going to be awesomely trippy. One aspect of the trailer that I think you’ll be interested in seeing, is the new version of Charles Xavier, who is played by Harry Lloyd (Game of Thrones).
The upcoming story appears to lean heavily in time travel, and the character David Haller (Dan Stevens) appears to be a some kind of cult leader. Even though he still believes that he is the hero of the story, his former friends are trying...

FX released the trailer for the third and final season of its X-Men series “Legion,” and by the looks of it, things are even stranger than its first two seasons.
David Haller (Dan Stevens) is now situated in a remote commune calling himself “The Magic Man,” while his former friends and Summerland, including the Shadow King (Navid Negahban), are plotting to kill him. There’s also a shot of Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) as the Mad Hatter.
For its final season, “Legion” is bringing in its most famous mutants in Charles Xavier, better known as Professor X, the leader of the X-Men. He also happens to be David’s father. Though the identity of Haller’s father was heavily teased as being Xavier (just like in the Marvel comic the series is based on), this will mark the first time it’s 100% confirmed. Stephanie Corneliussen is also coming aboard the final season as David’s mother,...

With “Avengers: Endgame” currently sitting as the second highest-grossing movie ever released worldwide (dethroning “Avatar” for the number one spot is a likely possibility), one of the questions now facing Disney is just how long the Marvel Cinematic Universe can sustain itself as a box office force. Sequels featuring already beloved heroes should have no problem being enormous hits, but will phase four of the McU be able match the heights of this last decade without Iron Man or Captain America to sell tickets?
Marvel Studios present Kevin Feige is already taking preemptive measures to ensure the answer to this question is yes. The producer has already gone on record saying more inclusivity is coming to the McU in phase four, which will include the McU’s first leading Asian superhero and its first openly gay superhero (rumored to be in “The Eternals”). McU titles “Black Panther” and “Captain Marvel...

Imagine, if you will, a checklist of all the things a TV show would need to do to convey that things are Not As They Seem.
There would almost certainly be a scene shot through some kaleidoscopic filter. Images would twitch as disconnected audio played over ominous conversations. Characters would be levitating above the floor. There would definitely be an extreme close-up on someone’s eyeball and someone would absolutely make a visual allusion to “Alice in Wonderland.”
It would seem that the trailer for “Legion” Season 3 manages to fit all of those into a 60-second span.
The series still follows enigmatic superbeing David Haller (Dan Stevens) as outside forces seem to control his ability to manipulate matter, time, and the core tenets of reality that humans usually tend to abide by. Though the context of their relationship has changed wildly since the beginning of the series, Syd (Rachel Keller) is still present,...

In the second episode of “Legion” season two on FX, Dan Stevens’ troubled telepathic hero David Haller encounters, for the first time, the true face of the nemesis that haunted and hunted him through season one — the Shadow King, aka Amahl Farouk, played by Navid Negahban. It’s a critical scene for David and Farouk, as well as for Aubrey Plaza’s Lenny, who, up until this moment, had been the mask that Farouk wore when facing David.
The scene begins with David projecting himself into a sort-of psychic realm, where he wakes in a field and approaches a fortune-teller booth, when Farouk appears. After a tense exchange, David telepathically attacks Farouk, and the two take turns transforming into escalating threats — a samurai, a tank, a storm — each trying to one-up the other. Lenny later appears but can’t convince Farouk to return her to the real world.

Heading into Tuesday’s Season 2 finale, FX’s Legion remains one of the most visually inventive and ambitious shows anywhere on television. But as a fan, after nearly full two seasons, I’m left wondering: What are all those mind-bending visuals adding up to, exactly?
I was a huge fan of Legion from the very first episode — enough to give it an “A” grade in TVLine’s original review last year. I loved creator Noah Hawley’s offbeat, psychedelic take on the standard comic-book drama, and was instantly hooked on David Haller’s transformation from troubled mental patient to telekinetically blessed mutant.

(Note: This post contains spoilers for the June 5 episode of “Legion.”)
The opening moments of “Legion” episode 10 just solidified where it has seemed like the show is going throughout Season 2: David Haller is becoming the comic book anti-hero for which the show is named.
The first few shots of episode 10 gave a big hint about what we can expect if (or more like when) David (Dan Stevens) goes fully evil. As the episode opens, we see a tent full of bones where Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) lies on the floor, and David sits in something like a throne, with his hair standing up in a flat top.
