A new face is about to pop up in Manhattan, Kansas: Olafur Darri Ólafsson is joining the Season 3 cast of Somebody Somewhere on HBO.
Ólafsson will recur as Iceland, the new renter of Sam’s (Bridget Everett) family farm. Production on the seven-episode season recently wrapped in Chicagoland.
From Mighty Mint, Duplass Brothers Productions, and executive producers Everett, Hannah Bos & Paul Thureen, the series follows Sam, a true Kansan on the surface, but, beneath it all, struggling to fit the hometown mold. Grappling with loss and acceptance, singing is Sam’s saving grace and leads her on a journey to discover herself and a community of outsiders who don’t fit in but don’t give up, showing that finding your people, and finding your voice, is possible. Anywhere. Somewhere. In season three, we see growth against all odds.

To date, only three programs throughout television history have swept the top seven Primetime Emmys categories for series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The lucky three are: miniseries “Angels in America” (2004), comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” (2020) and drama series “The Crown” (2021). At the upcoming 2024 Emmys, “The Bear” is hoping to join this esteemed list — and it’s all thanks to a savvy category switcheroo from one of its fan-fave stars.
Recently the FX dramedy about a Chicago beef restaurant claimed six of the top seven Primetime Emmys for its first season: comedy series, lead actor Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach as restaurant manager Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri as sous-chef Sydney Adamu, and both writing and directing for Christopher Storer. “The Bear” was not eligible in the lead actress category, so it couldn’t win there and complete the sweep.

Andy Cohen doesn’t want any drama with Ryan Seacrest this New Year’s Eve.
The Bravo personality is once again hosting CNN’s special from Times Square alongside Anderson Cooper.
At the top of each hour, the hosts are taking shots of alcohol to toast the new year; two years ago, Cohen and Cooper got noticeably tipsy, especially Cohen, who dissed Seacrest on the air as the latter was hosting ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.
“If you look behind me, you’ll see Ryan Seacrest’s group of losers performing,” Cohen said on the December 2021 special. “I’m sorry, but if you’re watching ABC, you’re watching nothing.” Cohen later apologized on his SiriuxXM radio show.
But then last year, Seacrest claimed on Live With Kelly and Ryan that Cohen “did not turn around and wave” at Seacrest when the latter waved at...

Carol Kohl is sitting on a train. No, she isn’t waiting for Dom Cobb to take her far away, but she is waiting for… something. Her watch is ticking, even though it doesn’t have any hands. The train isn’t moving. She’s completely alone. In an adjacent car, Carol (voiced by Martha Kelly) can see a horde of happy commuters staring back at her. A couple clad in suits of seaweed clink champagne flutes. A scuba diver swims through the air, between balloons floating like jellyfish. A bride raises her glass to toast Carol from across the tracks.
But Carol can only watch, and sit, and wait. Suddenly, her conductor chimes in to say this train is no longer in service. It powers down. The lights go out. The doors open. When Carol gets up to leave, she sees another version of herself sitting by the door.

The 2024 Golden Globes nominations were announced on Monday morning (December 11), leaving several projected heavy-hitters for the upcoming Oscars off the slate. The most notable rejections were “The Color Purple,” which missed for Best Film Comedy/Musical and one of the movie’s stars, Taraji P. Henson, who was left off the ballot for Best Film Supporting Actress. The movie did manage to squeak out nominations for Fantasia Barrino in Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress and Danielle Brooks for Best Film Supporting Actress.
Other major contenders that won’t compete include Best Film Drama contenders “Saltburn” and “The Iron Claw”, the screenplays for “American Fiction” and “The Holdovers” and the latter’s director, Alexander Payne.

Netflix has revealed the official trailer for an animated series premiering in just a few weeks titled Carol & The End of The World, created and produced by Dan Guterman. Another apocalyptic story about what to do when the world is ending. Global human annihilation is impending due to a mystery planet speeding towards Earth. Among the hedonistic crowd, one quiet & perpetually uneasy woman stands out, while the majority feel free to follow their greatest hedonistic desires. Guterman explains that the show is "a love letter to routine. A show about the comforts of monotony. An animated & existential comedy about the daily rituals that make up the gaps that make up a life." Featuring the voices of Martha Kelly as Carol, Beth Grant, Lawrence Pressman, Kimberly Hébert Gregory, Mel Rodriguez, Bridget Everett, and Delbert Hunt. Plus a whole bunch of guests.

Alan Carter approached Mag.Pi in Studio City at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23, carrying a bouquet of white hydrangeas wrapped in brown paper and polka-dotted cellophane. At 62 years old, Carter had never purchased flowers for someone he’s never met, but he was stunned this week to learn that the owner of the lifestyle boutique, Laura Ann Carleton, or Lauri to friends, was shot to death on Friday during a dispute with a man over a Pride flag outside her second Mag.Pi location near Lake Arrowhead.
“It gutted me, and I heard on the news that Mrs. Carleton also owned a store in Studio City,” said Carter. “I don’t know anyone in her family and I’ve never been in the store, though I’ve driven past it probably a hundred times. I can’t get to Lake Arrowhead, so I came here. I’m on a fixed income and really,...

“Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig responded to a post Monday about the death of his friend Laura “Lauri” Carleton, the 66-year-old shop owner who was murdered over an LGBTQ+ pride flag, providing additional details about the attack.
Feig countered a tweet claiming that the real reason Carleton was killed must have been because she refused to hand over the money in the cash register when the perpetrator confronted her, rather than the pride flag she had hanging in front of her store.
“The man who shot her was tearing down her pride flag. Lauri walked out and asked him ‘Why do you need to do this?’” Feig wrote on X/Twitter. “He ranted at her with anti-gay [invective] and she asked him again ‘But why do you need to do this?’ And then he shot her twice in the chest. There’s no agenda here.”

The Bridesmaids filmmaker added that he was “devastated” for her family and the LGBTQ community, for which she was a “true ally.

Lauri Carleton, the 66-year-old owner of the Lake Arrowhead-area clothing store Mag.pi, was shot and killed Friday, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The killing has drawn national attention due to reports that she was “murdered defending her LGBTQ+ Pride flags in front of her store,” as Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ stated in a Facebook post.
Now according to a post from Paul Feig, “Bridesmaids” director and friend of Carleton, she was killed by a 27-year-old man who ripped down a large pride flag outside her store. He adds that when she confronted him, he shot her.

In the writing and directing categories, 541 different screenplays and 745 different directed episodes are eligible.
And if you add it all up, you’ll get lots and lots of questions as we wait for the voting to end, the ballots to be counted and the nominations to be announced on July 12.
Here are a few of those questions. Spoiler alert: For the most part, these questions won’t have answers for about three weeks.

This week on TheWrap-Up podcast, TheWrap founder and editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman spoke with Bridget Everett, star of the HBO comedy series “Somebody Somewhere.”
The discussion begins in Manhattan, Kansas, not only the birthplace of Everett but the setting for the HBO series in which she plays Sam, a woman trying to find happiness in the wake of her sister’s death.
“My childhood was a lot different, a lot of the people I grew up with who I’m still friends with were all church, family, faith, football on weekends,” Everett said of how the show’s portrayal of Manhattan life compares to her upbringing. “It was largely sort of a straight, heteronormative vibe back in the ‘70s and ‘80s.”
That said, when she met with creators Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen about working on something together at HBO, they pitched a number of elements that resonated deeply with Everett.

When HBO offered Bridget Everett an overall deal, she never imagined anything would actually come out of it. “I thought, ‘Ok, this is money, but after a year I’m gonna have to go back and just make my live shows,’ ” she says during a lunchtime interview in April to mark, incidentally, the second season of her series, Somebody Somewhere.
The quietly affecting comedy, about a woman who is still struggling with the emotional re-entry to her hometown after her sister’s death, has embodied the kind of success specific to premium cable: critical acclaim, a steadily growing audience and prestige awards (it was just nominated for a Peabody). Everett speaks about it with equal amounts of pride and extreme humility. “We’re a small show, and I’m not chasing any hardware, but I will chase whatever keeps us on the air,” she explains. “I can’t imagine ever...

“Showbiz!” is not only actor and nightlife legend Murray Hill’s signature catchphrase — it’s a perfect descriptor of the besuited Somebody Somewhere star’s Old Hollywood charm.
Hill has been a cabaret host and Lower East Side fixture since arriving in New York City more than 20 years ago. It was at a lesbian dive called Hershey Bar that Hill was first exposed to drag kings (women impersonating men). “It was all about masculinity and passing, very heavy and dark,” says Hill. “It wasn’t camp or comedy like the drag queens I’d seen. It wasn’t euphoric.” Detecting an untapped market, Murray Hill was born, the name adopted from Hill’s actual East Side neighborhood at the time.
Anyone who’s seen Hill onscreen or onstage — or simply sat down for a cocktail with him — is sure to notice the positivity emanating from him in waves. “Camp humor...

Sometimes the best way for a performer to gain screen time is to write their own material — and there are dozens of multihyphenates who have balanced writing and acting duties on their respective series this season. That’s particularly true in comedy, a genre that sees many series led by performers who mine their own lives for onscreen laughs. (See, for example, HBO Max’s Bridget Everett-led Somebody Somewhere, Peacock’s Pete Davidson vehicle Bupkis and Netflix’s Mo, co-created by and starring Mo Amer.)
But running a show is also a great way for an actor to branch out into the directing field. This season, these five actor-writers also helmed episodes of their Emmy-contending shows.
