It's Only Episode In, But it Didn't Have the Strongest Start
I'm not leaving a rating, I want to give it a minute. This is the first episode of the show, it didn't come out swinging, but who knows, it's early & could find its stride. In terms of a premier episode, I agree with a lot of you. It seemed to be trying pretty hard with some of the jokes. They really like that ironic-style exposition & some break-the-fourth-wall moments which can be clever, but felt like a lot right out of the gate. Especially when a lot the jokes are that hyper-specific "isn't it funny how intense or nerdy I am?"
The tone wasn't amazing for me. Mostly because it seemed they tried to fit a joke in almost every sentence in each scene. I don't love when scenes feel like a string of one-liners. 30 Rock was a comedy that did that really really well & I love it there. Bob's does it a lot too, but it's hard. And both Bob's & 30 Rock do more casual scene set up then Great North so far. They're shooting for a top shelf joke or highest stake drama each second-to-second. Really all different ways of saying it's a lot of jokes. I love the cast & I love Bob's so I'll give Great North some more episodes to find their footing, but it wasn't favorite start.
