Warning: The following contains major spoilers for The Babadook.
The first time I watched The Babadook, I nearly had a nervous breakdown. It was March of 2015. My husband, a Cpa, was deep in the throes of tax season, leaving me alone for long stretches of time with our one-year-old son and three-year-old daughter who was going through a screaming phase. Needless to say, the story of a mother pushed to the edge of sanity resonated with me deeply. One scene in particular, monstrous clothing reigning down as the frightened heroine crawls across the floor, was so affecting that I paused the movie and cried for a good ten minutes. Despite the extremity of my reaction, I would wager that I’m not alone. In the ten years since The Babadook premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, Jennifer Kent’s debut feature has become known for its ability to blend horror...

The Babadook is a fairy-tale, you could almost start explaining it with “once upon a time”…the story revolves around the relationship between Amelia (Essie Davis) a single mother and her son Samuel (Noah Wiseman). Still mourning the death of her husband who died six years previously she is left alone to deal with her son who is out of control. One day a book appears at the house, The Babadook, proclaiming the coming of a dark character who immediately has an effect on the imaginative child. When Amelia too begins to be haunted by Mr Babadook it’s not long before she is in a battle not only for the safety of her child, but also her sanity.
I like to think of The Babadook as a love letter to iconic movies in horror history.

When a disturbing storybook called 'The Babadook' turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he's been dreaming about. “It’s just a book. It can’t hurt you.” But Amelia doesn’t realize that Mister Babadook is a far cry from the vibrant tales of Dr. Seuss. The monster in Mister Babadook is real, and Amelia’s six-year-old son Samuel knows it’s coming for them in the new trailer for The Babadook that shows mother and son facing a creature that would be right at home in the boogeyman’s nightmares.

Amelia (Davis) and her son, Sam, have had a raw deal in life. Her husband Oskar died six years prior while driving her to the hospital pregnant with Sam and his birthday is a particularly painful reminder. But this year things take a turn for the worse. Samuel’ temperament is becoming increasingly more feral and it’s taking its toll on Amelia – who tries to handle Sam with patience, understanding and, eventually, sedatives. And it only gets worse when Amelia reads Samuela a mysterious pop-up children’s book called “Mister Babadook”. The seven-year-olds imagination runs riot and his problems take a much darker turn, nearly getting kicked out of school for bringing Babadook-fighting weapons to class and injuring the daughter of Amelia’s already concerned sister.

The tactic of launching writer-director Jennifer Kent.s The Babadook at the Sundance Film Festival is paying off with a multi-territory deal.
Wild Bunch bought the rights for France, Germany and Switzerland to the psychological thriller which stars Essie Davis as a tormented widow who tries to deal with her son.s fear of a night-time monster and must eventually confront a sinister entity in the house.
Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall, Hayley McElhinney, Barbara West and Ben Winspear co-star.
The film has won glowing reviews since its world premiere in the festival.s Midnight section. .It's very personal, and it plays on the very real fears and anxieties of parenthood in a way that never feels "cool," but that always feels authentic,. opined Hitflix.s Drew McWeeny.
.I found the film very upsetting, and even when it ends, Kent isn't interested in letting you off the hook. Evil never just disappears,...

Surfacing over at Twitch is the debut trailer of an Australian horror film in the vein of ‘Insidious’ with a more artistic aesthetic. The Babadook is funded by their Kickstarter, which first launched in late 2012, and exceeded its goal by a mere $71. This definitely doesn’t look like it was made on a paltry 30K, though. Yes, there only appears to be two main characters, but the production design, set and the cinematography are even with the work that Wan did on his breakout hit. Also, we’re just looking at a trailer here, but this footage is cut in a much more enticing manner, avoiding any blatant reveals and deftly hinting at possibilities. Sure, The Babadook is trying to follow in the footsteps of the ‘boogeyman’ stories that’ve come before it, but what the footage here implies is a promise of graceful visual composition and clever storytelling beyond...

The Sundance Institute has released the movie line-up for their Spotlight, Midnight and Sundance Kids selections for The Sundance Film Festival 2014. The Midnight selection has always been my favorite because its always packed with really crazy, fun, and messed up films. It looks like another great collection of films this next year! They include films such as Cooties with Elijah Wood, Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead and more. Sundance Kids is a new addition this year which, if you couldn't tell, is meant for younger audiences.
The Festival takes place January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah, and we will be there to cover as many of the films as humanly possible. Director of Programming, Trevor Groth, had this to say in a statement.

You may have noticed Uncle Creepy posting lots of imagery from films playing at Sundance 2014 earlier today, and now we have the full announcement of which horror projects are included in the Spotlight and Park City at Midnight lineups.
As mentioned when posting the first wave of films screening this year, it's sometimes difficult to tell exactly what's horror-related, so below are our best guesses of what we'll be covering from this latest batch or are films that sound just fringey enough that we'll be keeping our eyes on them:
Spotlight
Blue Ruin / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Jeremy Saulnier) — A mysterious outsider’s quiet life turns upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving to be an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family. Cast: Macon Blair, Amy Hargreaves, Sidné Anderson, Devin Ratray,...

I had a hunch that Cooties (read here) and Adam Wingard’s The Guest (read here) might make it into what appears to be a line-up of eight (there might be some wiggle one for one last minute inclusion), but this year’s section flaunts a more international palate with the latest from Norway’s Tommy Wirkola (sequel to Dead Snow – which showed at the fest in 2009) reps Europe, Taika Waititi & Jemaine Clement return to the fest they broke out of with Eagle Vs. Shark but with a mockumentary (What We Do in the Shadows) that might compliment the inclusion of Jim Jarmusch’s latest. Oceania gets further representation with Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook and from Asia, the program assures some blood splatter with The Mo Brothers’ Killers. William Eubank arrives with a title that might sound familiar for those who hit the fest in 2007, but this version of...

When Sundance announced the films in competition for the 2014 festival yesterday, its organizers noted that they were impressed by the caliber of cinematic artistry — mostly due to technology — that freed up filmmakers to experiment with different genres. No category of the festival is more rooted in genre than Park City at Midnight, the late-night section that specializes in horror and the supernatural, and this year’s slate has several potential breakouts. “The Midnight lineup came together in a way that is about the strongest group we’ve ever had, top to bottom,” says Trevor Groth, Sundance’s director of programming.

Psychological-thriller The Babadook, starring Essie Davis, has begun filming in South Australia.
It marks the debut feature film from writer/director Jennifer Kent and follows a single mother who battles with her son's fear of a monster lurking in the house, only to discover a sinister presence all around her.
As well as Davis (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries; The Slap; cloudstreet), the film also stars Daniel Henshall (Snowtown), Hayley McElhinney, Ben Winspear and six-year-old Noah Wiseman. In a statement, Davis said she was ready to tackle the complex role.
"It's such a complex, intense and intriguing character to be playing and a lot of responsibility to carry a film like this, but I've known director Jennifer Kent for 20 years now so I'm totally ready to surrender and take the plunge with her into this incredible and terrifying world."

A new series of Underbelly has started filming for Nine and production company Screentime.
The fifth series- called Underbelly: Badness – returns to Sydney’s modern crime history, set between 2001 and 2011.
The story is based on the murder of Terry Falconer by underworld figures Anthony Perish and Andrew Perish and the team of police dedicated to bringing the Perishs to justice.
Perish, 42, was sentenced to 18 years on Friday 13 April 2012 in the Nsw Supreme Court while his brother Andrew Perish, 41, was sentenced to at least nine years, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
