Alex Garland’s hit dystopian thriller Civil War has landed a potentially lucrative theatrical release in China. Chinese company Huahua Media acquired the local rights to the film and will distribute it in partnership with Alibaba Pictures on June 7. The plans mark a significant milestone for the tastemaking mini-major A24. It’s the influential studio’s very first theatrical opening in China, the world’s second-largest film market.
Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Civil War has earned $65 million in North America and $108 million worldwide.

A24 is a studio that has built up a good name over the last decade and change in Hollywood. It's a name that means something to moviegoers, and that's no small thing. But as the studio looks to compete in an increasingly volatile Hollywood landscape, minor theatrical successes like "Priscilla" and disastrous flops such as "Under the Silver Lake" aren't going to cut it anymore. So, the studio is going bigger and making its biggest bet ever with Alex Garland's "Civil War." The question is, can this politically-charged, unconventional war film break through like a more conventional blockbuster?
Given that Garland's latest carries a $50 million budget, A24 is certainly hoping so. The good news is that the initial numbers suggest that this one will be a winner, at least in the early going. "Civil War" is eyeing an opening between $18 and $24 million when it arrives next weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Since the advent of DVDs and Blu-rays, extended cuts for movies have become pretty unanimous in Hollywood. These versions would often come with deleted scenes that were originally cut from the theatrical experience. However, this wasn’t the case with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which was released back in 2021, and unfortunately for fans, similar will be the case for the sequel.
Following Villeneuve’s decision to not incorporate what he gutted out from the theatrical version, fans now will never be able to live scenes of two characters, who didn’t make it to the final cut.

Denis Villeneuve Will Not Incorporate the Deleted Scenes in Dune 2‘s Physical Release
While Dune: Part 2 is turning out to be a huge hit, both critically and commercially, some were upset following the absence of Stephen Henderson’s Thufir Hawat. Although Henderson did film scenes for the film as Thufir Hawat,...

A24 will be giving Civil War, the latest film from Alex Garland, the director of Ex Machina, Annihilation, Devs, and Men, a theatrical release on April 12th – and with that release date just a couple months away, a new trailer for the film has arrived online. The screenplay Garland wrote for Civil War digs into what happens when 19 states secede from the United States, with factions forming in the West and Florida. Meanwhile, the President says the conflict will be dealt with swiftly, but are things already impossible to control? While some choose to engage with the catastrophe head-on, others prefer to pretend like it’s not happening right outside their door. As the President sends the American military out to “resolve” matters in the West, people are left to despair as the world burns around them. Meanwhile, Kirsten Dunst’s...

The trailer for Alex Garland’s Civil War dropped late last year to a mix of reactions. Fans of Garland didn’t know what to make heads or tails out of the project since the epic scope lends itself to more of a big-budget blockbuster action film. Despite the filmmaker not being known for partaking in Michael Bay-style action, the imagery of the war sequences shown in the trailer promotes a kind of action fare that gives off the impression it could be a “one for them” type of movie, especially since A24 has shown interest in getting involved in franchise films. On the other hand, the subject matter is heavy enough and the 28 Days Later filmmaker has been known for making apocalyptic films with an enormous sense of dread.

Exclusive: A24 is taking an opportunity with a blank spot on the calendar for a wide release, April 12, and moving its Alex Garland movie Civil War to that weekend.
The action film, about a near-fractured America balanced on a razor’s edge, was originally set to go on April 26, but now A24 will have access to Imax auditoriums on its new date. The movie starring Kirsten Dunst also moves away from a weekend that had the Zendaya-starring tennis dramedy Challengers from Amazon MGM Studios and Lionsgate’s Unsung Hero.
Civil War also stars Wagner Moura (Narcos), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), Stephen Henderson (Dune), Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina), Jesse Plemons (Power of the Dog) and Nick Offerman (The Last of Us).
A24 produced the film alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA and Gregory Goodman.
Garland received an Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for Ex Machina, which also won an Academy Award for Visual Effects.

Restarted negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers that could mean an end to the actors strike have raised hopes for this year’s American Film Market, which runs Oct. 31-Nov, 5 in Santa Monica. What everyone is hoping for is, in the words of one leading indie producer, that “we can all get back to business.”
Even without a new SAG-AFTRA deal, there is a healthy batch of new titles on offer — a mix of international features and U.S. indie films that have secured interim agreements from the union to begin production. “In the last few days we’ve seen a waterfall of lineups,” says Nadiia Zaionchkovska, Cco of newly-founded Ukraine distributor Green Light Films, which will be making its market debut at this year’s AFM. “Lots of theatrical films, lots either in post or in pre-production, ready to shoot in the first...
