The current Peak IP era presents a potential pitfall for diversity in media, considering a 2020 New York Times feature that found 95 percent of the books published by the major publishing houses since 1950 were written by white authors.
That’s why nonprofit Pathos Labs, the think tank that looks to use media and entertainment for positive change, has created The IP List, an industry-crowdsourced index of books by authors from underrepresented backgrounds that are available for option. The list defines “underrepresented” as any community that hasn’t been portrayed in the media with authenticity, nuance and their own voices, and can include class, ability, geographic location, religion, ethnicity, race, sex, gender and sexual orientation.
“When 64 percent of scripted film and television content in Hollywood is based on adaptations of existing works, we really need to design pathways for content originating from diverse authors to get optioned and produced,” Pathos Labs executive...

Any topic that can seize the attention of the audience is rare these days. We used to make aspirational stories where there were clearly defined roles for the hero and the villain. Then came the relatable phase of storytelling, where mundane stories were being told with such care that the audience could see their daily struggles in them. The new miniseries Hustlers wants to combine the two approaches to storytelling. It’s a story about an ordinary boy who hustles his way to the top, hence the name. It’s an aspirational story, as everyone connects to a ‘hero’ figure who fights his way through and succeeds in whatever endeavor he aspires to. But keeping in with the trends, Hustlers tries to keep it relatable, giving us characters that are so well known to the Indian middle class.

Amazon MiniTV had left the topic of entrepreneurship uncovered up until this point, but now they too have a show to cater to those bright-eyed youngsters who want to enter the field. Hustlers is a 5-episode miniseries that tells the story of Sanjay Sharma, a middle-class young lad who faces constant rejection but ultimately takes the decision to put his startup idea to the test, risking immense ridicule from his father. The series has its ups and downs, but it is clear that it doesn’t have anything new to say. The idea of hustling your way to the top has been explored before, but in a much more authentic way. The series does try to add its own flavor to the same idea, but the trouble is that in doing so, it crushes any novelty that could have emerged, at least in the performances. Everything is too on the nose,...

After two and a half years as a public entity, Endeavor is on the verge of going private again.
While nothing has been finalized, most observers agree that privatization is the most likely endgame following Endeavor Group’s announcement that it’s evaluating “strategic alternatives” for its assets, which include the WME talent agency and various live events businesses.
“By announcing that Endeavor was exploring its strategic alternatives, Ari was throwing in the towel,” says Lloyd Greif, an investment banker and CEO of Los Angeles-based firm Greif & Co. “From all appearances, Ari’s un-ringing the bell at the New York Stock Exchange and dropping the curtain — for now — as a public company.”
It might be humbling but not exactly a shocking development for Endeavor, which has struggled to convince Wall Street that its holdings can translate into shareholder value greater than the sum of its parts.

When SAG-AFTRA talks ended abruptly on Wednesday, Oct. 11, swiftly taking the industry’s high hopes for an imminent end to the actors’ strike with it, the most significant sticking point left on the table was the union’s proposal to charge a fee per streaming platform subscriber.
The ask, a revised version of a previous revenue-sharing proposal that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers had rejected, prompted hyperbolic remarks on both sides. “A bridge too far” said Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos, while SAG-AFTRA’s chief negotiator conversely deemed the adjusted proposal a “huge, huge concession.” The studios claimed the proposal would cost more than $800 million per year, while the union fired back that the aforementioned estimate was “intentionally misrepresented” by the companies and overstated by 60 percent.
Not in dispute is the framework of what the actors guild is asking for. The current SAG-AFTRA proposal would multiply the number...

Even with the most recent watershed moments of Minari, Sound of Metal and Crazy Rich Asians, finding a place in Hollywood remains a challenge for Asian American and Pacific Islander creatives and talent.
On Thursday Daniel Dae Kim, Nina Yang Bongiovi and Sanjay Sharma gathered for Amazon’s Asian & Pacific Islander Representation In Film & Media – Voices, moderated by Amazon’s Albert Cheng. They reflected on the progress, or lack thereof, in amplifying Aapi voices in Hollywood and the internal obstacles stunting the industry’s Dei efforts.
“I think you cant help but look at the relationship between representation in media and representation of us. In general they’re inextricably linked that’s why it’s important we’re in a position where we can change the narrative in a way that’s meaningful,” Kim said.

Coimbatore, Jan 31 (Ians) Gaurav Gill was in blazing form at the wheels of his Mahindra Xuv as he and navigator Musa Sherif showed immense skills and patience to win the Rally of Coimbatore on Sunday and again emerge national champions.
By winning two legs on tarmac in Itanagar last month and coming to the leafy environs of Kethanur -- 40km outside Coimbatore -- where the rally stages were situated, Gill showed he was also the king on gravel.
From Saturday to Sunday afternoon, Gill had a lot of problems. From Stage 1 on Saturday till the end of Stage 6 on Sunday, his rally machine was not in best shape.
The car was in "limp mode" where he was not able to drive at the maximum speed he wanted on a demanding surface where gravel, hard pieces of stone and rock lit up the proceedings.
There were twists and turns, cars kicking...

Amazon on Thursday revealed the next four films to be released next year as part of its “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series. The first four genre movies in the collection launched on Prime Video this month.
Just like the first four films of the program, the next group represents four unique stories that are connected by common themes, including institutional horrors and personal phobias. The “social thrillers,” as Amazon terms them, are helmed by up-and-coming directors.
“Coming off the successful launch of the first four films of the program, which has surpassed our expectations, we are excited to reveal the next chapter coming in 2021,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “The spine-tingling, edge of your seat thrills continues in this next collection of titles that will surely entertain, surprise and shock our global customers.”
The first four in the Blumhouse series are a mixed bag, with IndieWire’s best review going to “Black Box.

It is the legendary actress, Moushumi Chatterjee's daughter, Meghaa who will be seen dancing to the remix of the yesteryear track, "Raat Baaki Baat Baaki" in Sanjay Sharma's upcoming film Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron starring Kapil Sharma, of Dunno Y Na Jaane Kyun fame, and TV actor, Kulraj Randhawa.
Meghaa was heard saying, "My mother was famous for not needing glycerin to cry on screen. So the only way to break free from that image and the comparisons thereof was to enter the industry in a glamorous way." So this seems to be an attempt to have an image makeover even before entering the industry. Lets see how far this Bengali beauty gets to create a bigger name than her mother using a glamourous dance number rather than a performance-oriented film.
One more star daughter sets off to realize her dreams. More the merrier!
