P.T. Barnum was known by others as “The Greatest Showman,” but literally labeled himself “The Prince of Humbugs” as an homage to the way he successfully cheated and tricked his audiences. In the upcoming 20th Century Fox holiday blockbuster, featuring Hugh Jackman as Barnum, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), alleges that the star-studded, pop music-infused biopic romanticizes and inaccurately represents a shameful time in America’s history.
The organization is now urging moviegoers to skip out on “The Greatest Showman.” After 36 years of protests and documenting abuse against various circuses (including the eponymous one Barnum created), the organization reduced attendance and successfully helped to shut down the disgraced Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circuses. Although the film uses CGI instead of wild animals, there are many circuses that still participate in this behavior.

President Donald Trump criticized elephant hunting as a “horror show” in a new tweet suggesting that he plans to reverse his administration’s recent decision to lift a 2014 ban on big-game trophy hunting in Zimbabwe and Zambia.
After first announcing the move last Wednesday, Trump faced extreme backlash from politicians, environmentalists and elephant lovers — including accusations that the decision was motivated by his sons Eric and Donald Jr., who are both avid hunters.
Amid the criticism, Trump hinted at a reversal in a tweet Sunday night.

Ten years ago, the last horse slaughter plant operating in the United States closed its doors.
This September, however, an amendment set to reach the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives will determine the fate of America’s horses and whether taxpayers will be funding the return of this cruel, unnecessary and predatory industry.
In a letter to Congress, the Humane Society Legislative Fund and The Humane Society of the United States, along with William Shatner, Kaley Cuoco, Willie Nelson, Jill Rappaport, Nikki Reed, Sebastian Roche, Ian Somerhalder, Arielle Kebbel and others, urged policy makers to pass an amendment in the Agriculture Appropriations bill that prohibits the use of federal funds to inspect horse slaughter facilities.
“Horse slaughter is a dark and predatory industry. It has never provided a solution for unwanted horses or abuse and encourages overbreeding by providing an artificial disposal option for irresponsible breeders and owners,...

On his first day in office, President Donald Trump issued a memorandum that could have devastating consequences for show horses subjected to a painful practice known as horse soring.
According to USA Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture finalized a regulation just a week before Barack Obama left office that would update the Horse Protection Act, effectively banning horse soring and putting an end to unsuccessful self-policing that was in place before. The rule can only be enforced if it’s published in the Federal Register, which did not happen before Obama stepped down.

A decade-long legal battle is finally coming to a close after the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Aspca) agreed to pay the owners of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus $9.3 million for alleging the circus abused their elephants.
The lucrative settlement was announced on Friday, according to papers to filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., Courthouse News reports.
“Animal activists have been attacking our family, our company, and our employees for decades because they oppose animals in circuses,” Kenneth Feld, chairman and chief executive officer of Feld Entertainment, said in a statement obtained by Bloomberg. “This settlement is a vindication not just for the company but also for the dedicated men and women who spend their lives working and caring for all the animals with Ringling Bros.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a landmark legislation on Tuesday that protects animal welfare and food safety. The new law requires that shelled (whole) eggs sold in California comply with the modest but important food safety and animal welfare standards of Proposition 2. Passed in a 2008 landslide, Prop 2 phases out production of eggs from hens crammed into cages.
The bill, A.B. 1437, requires that all whole eggs sold in California as of Jan. 1, 2015, come from hens able to stand up, fully extend their limbs, lie down and spread their wings without touching each other or the sides of their enclosure, thus requiring cage-free conditions for the birds.
“By signing this bill, Governor Schwarzenegger has taken an important step in protecting animal welfare in a way that will also improve food safety for consumers across California,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. “Californians have made it...
