By Harvey Karten - Within its brief 81-minutes' run, "Mine" mines issues pertaining to the law, class, culture, natural disasters, geography, and pet lore inside the United States. Yet somehow, because of its languid pace, its laid-back guitar soundtrack, its matter-of-fact storytelling in which even despairing owners of missing dogs tell their stories almost as though disconnected, "Mine" does not become a three-hanky movie. Maybe that's all to its credit: we have enough Hallmark-style pics out there, the latest being the heavily marketed CBS Films' "Extraordinary Measures." What we do come away with is a look at how much dogs, and to some extent cats, mean everything to some of their owners and virtually nothing to others, the rich and poor lining up in both categories of humankind.

Opening Theatrically / Online / On Demand. If the world goes to the dogs, who will feed and care for them? Geralyn Pezanoski's Mine considers what happened to the animals left behind in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The film, which won the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at SXSW last year, "may churn your emotions," I wrote for another site. "Once the true essence of the story becomes apparent, it's difficult to turn away from the screen. The heart of the documentary lies in the conflict between pet lovers." The doc is warm-hearted, but doesn't shy away from portraying both sides of the sometimes-contentious conflicts that developed.

Canada will be hosting hundreds, if not thousands, if not mllions (only a slight exaggeration, I'm told) of visitors when the Toronto International Film Festival opens on September 10, which is next Thursday! Look for intensive coverage from the Cinematical team on the ground; those of us not lucky enough to go will be following the news eagerly from afar to gauge the critical reaction to many hotly-anticipated titles.
Deals. Courtesy of our friends at indieWIRE, we learned that Mother, the latest picture by Bong Joon-Ho (The Host), has been acquired by Magnolia Pictures, along with the Korean director's first effort, Barking Dogs Never Bite. - When it comes to the individual rights of animals, in the eyes of the law, we are still at the cro-magnon stages as we do next to nothing to protect their interests. As they are still regarded as property/objects, there was a really sticky issue that came about from all the pet saving measures that were taken after Katrina hit. New homes were found for displaced pooches, felines and god knows what else us humans keep imprisoned in our homes and what followed, is the basis for what may be a pertinent docu film. Film Movement have picked up from Geralyn Pezanoski's Mine - the winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at SXSW, a docu that examines how we treat animals as an extension of how we view and treat each other. This should receive a quick theatrical release perhaps as early as 2009. Pezanoski's

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
Lineup after the break.
