Janet Yang, the Los Angeles-based producer and president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, has been appointed as an independent non-executive director to the board of Imax China, a subsidiary of premium large format cinema company Imax that has its own share listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
The company, Wednesday, reported a return to net profits of $27.5 million for the 2023 calendar year. That compared with net profit of $10.8 million in 2022. Revenues rebounded too, from $73.3 million to $87 million.
The 2022 results were also undermined by a more than $19 million loss related to currency hedging. Imax China said that on a “total comprehensive income” basis, 2023 was profitable to the tune of $24.7 million, compared with losses of $8.7 million in 2022.
Currencies aside, the company appears to have emerged in good health. Its balance sheet shrank slightly, trade payables were down, borrowings were eliminated and retained earnings soared.

DreamWorks Animation said in an SEC filing that Chief Marketing Officer Dawn Taubin, COO Mark Zoradi and Vice Chairman Lewis Coleman are exiting the company as part of the restructuring plan. Taubin and Zoradi are leaving before the end of the current quarter, and Coleman — who resigned from the board of directors, effective immediately — will retire on or about January 30.
Taubin joined Dwa as Cmo in August 2013, replacing Anne Globe. From 2002-08, Taubin led domestic marketing at Warner Bros, where she oversaw the Harry Potter franchise, 300: Rise Of An Empire and the launch of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Prior to returning to the studio game she had been a consultant and a professor at Chapman University in Orange, CA.

This is one panel I want to attend. Why? Well, these three women are damned smart and if they share a fraction of what they know about producing, distribution, marketing and the state of Hollywood and the independents today, we will all be the wiser. I'll be showing up on April 11th to watch DreamWorks Animation Chief Marketing Officer Dawn Taubin moderate this panel at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts' 15th Annual Women in Focus Conference. The panelists are: Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures ("Argo," "The Great Gatsby"); Terry Press, Co-president, CBS Films ("Last Vegas," "Inside Llewyn Davis"); and JoAnne Sellar, Producer ("The Master"). The upcoming event will feature an afternoon of panel discussions with established women in the business, as well as a scholarship presentation, luncheon and networking mixer. The free Women in Focus event starts at 1:...

Dawn Taubin has been tapped to run DreamWorks Animation marketing after the departure of Anne Globe earlier this week, the studio announced Thursday. It's a return to a big studio for Taubin, who ran Warner Bros.' domestic marketing from 2002 to 2008, including during the heart of the studio's "Harry Potter" run. Taubin has spent the last five years teaching at Chapman University -- though she kept one foot in Hollywood during that time, consulting with live-action DreamWorks, Disney, Sony and other companies on PR, marketing and awards campaigns. "Dawn's vast experience in...

In the ongoing restructuring of Warner Bros., Sue Kroll has been named to the newly created post of president of worldwide marketing at Warner Bros. Pictures.
The move comes less than a week after domestic film marketing head Dawn Taubin exited and Kevin McCormick's official promotion to president of production. The changes at the studio began rolling in late November, when Jeff Robinov ascended to head of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, giving him oversight over all film matters.
The latest move sees both domestic and international marketing divisions reporting to a single office and is a response to the importance of overseas markets to the company's bottom line.
Kroll most recently was president of marketing at Warner Bros. Pictures International, a post she assumed in 2000. During that tenure, the division grossed more than $1 billion for seven consecutive years, with 32 releases each exceeding $100 million internationally in that period. In 2004, the division passed the $2 billion mark, becoming the first studio to do so.

Dawn Taubin has been ousted as head of domestic film marketing at Warner Bros., but with three Warners films in the boxoffice top 10, the move is traceable only to a restructuring of theatrical operations on the Burbank lot.
Warners production president Jeff Robinov recently was elevated to head of the newly formed Warner Bros. Pictures Group. With Taubin and Robinov known to have cool relations, industry figures knew the restructuring would portend tough times for the marketing maven, who newly reported to Robinov instead of studio president and COO Alan Horn.
Insiders said no decision has been made on who will top marketing operations on the lot. Officially, Warners kept comment to a minimum.
"Due to the restructuring resulting from the recent founding of the Warner Bros. Pictures Group, Dawn Taubin has agreed to relinquish her role," Horn said Wednesday. "My professional relationship with Dawn has been one of the most satisfying in my 35 years in the entertainment industry.

Veteran marketing and publicity executive Dennis Higgins has been named vp national publicity at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Higgins will head one of the department's three publicity teams, reporting to Juli Goodwin, who was recently promoted to senior vp national publicity.
"Dennis Higgins brings more than 20 years' experience in entertainment publicity and marketing to our publicity group," Warners domestic theatrical marketing president Dawn Taubin said. "He has worked on films of every genre, both large and small, and has earned the respect and admiration of both his colleagues and the media."
Higgins moves to Warners from Bauer Martinez Entertainment, the production and distribution company that has been downsizing quickly in recent months. He had been the company's senior vp publicity since 2005.
Before that, Higgins had been at Intermedia Entertainment, where he was senior vp marketing and corporate communications for two years. He joined Intermedia from Miramax, where from 2001-02 he worked on a variety of projects, including the Oscar-winning Chicago and In the Bedroom.
From 1989-2001, Higgins was senior vp publicity at Columbia Pictures, where he was involved in the campaigns of As Good as It Gets, Jerry Maguire and Philadelphia. He also worked on such blockbusters as Charlie's Angels, Men in Black, Air Force One, My Best Friend's Wedding, Sleepless in Seattle and Basic Instinct.
Higgins also had stints at 20th Century Fox and MGM/UA.
