Dakota Johnson is figuring out what she wants from her dating life after admitting she’s interested in women in the first trailer for Am I Ok?
Max announced Monday that the dramedy feature from co-directors Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne is set to launch on the streaming service June 6 after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2022. Sonoya Mizuno, Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Molly Gordon, June Diane Raphael and Notaro round out the cast.
Am I Ok? centers on lifelong friends Lucy (Johnson) and Jane (Mizuno) navigating the changes in their paths after Jane plans a move to London, leading Lucy to reveal a secret about herself.
While encouraging Johnson to come out of her shell, Mizuno says in the trailer, “You try 20 different flavors of ice cream before you settle on a single scoop.” This leads Johnson to respond, “Ice cream is different than vagina.”

Premiering way back some 27 months ago at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, we’ve been curious what happened to Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne’s directorial feature debut Am I Ok?. Led by Dakota Johnson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Molly Gordon, Sean Hayes, and Notaro, Max has now unveiled it’ll arrive on June 6 and has debuted a new trailer.
Here’s the synopsis: “Lucy (Johnson) and Jane (Mizuno) have been best friends for most of their lives and think they know everything there is to know about each other. But when Jane announces she’s moving to London, Lucy reveals a long-held secret. As Jane tries to help Lucy, their friendship is thrown into chaos.”
Jake Kring-Schreifels said in his review, “A romantic comedy that functions best as a fable of friendship and self-reflection, Am I Ok? is the kind of lightweight, amiable movie that just barely earns...

Exclusive: Loaded Films founder Eiko Mizuno-Gray and Kinoshita-Kansei Group CEO Masahide Kinoshita have teamed up to launch Tokyo-based production company, Kinofaction, which aims to focus on minority Japanese co-productions.
The new outfit will take a minority stake in feature film projects that have significant Japanese elements and/or talent involved. It is actively seeking projects initiated outside of Japan with strong festival and commercial potential.
Loaded Films, the production company founded by Mizuno-Gray and Jason Gray, will continue to separately produce a slate of projects developed in-house, including Renoir, the next project from Plan 75 director Chie Hayakawa, which Goodfellas has boarded for sales.
Kinofaction already has several projects on its slate, including Poland-set The Excursion, from writer-director Kei Ishikawa, whose credits include Venice titles Traces Of Sin (2016) and A Man (2020). His new project is a co-production with Poland’s Lava Films, which is here in Cannes with competition title The Girl With The Needle.

A24’s new trailer for Civil War doesn’t move viewers any closer to understanding how, given the history of our country, California would be joining Texas and Florida in seceding from the United States. The idea of a second Civil War is nowhere near as far-fetched as Texas and Florida agreeing with anything California proposes, and vice versa, and writer/director Alex Garland recently said he wants audiences to ask how that could possibly happen.
“I tend not to spell things out in films. I sometimes feel overly spoon-fed by cinema, and so I probably just react against that,” said Garland in an interview with Empire. “That question, why Texas and California, is a question that I want the audience to ask.”
The film stars Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, and Nick Offerman. Spaeny, McKinley Henderson, Offerman, and Mizuno previously starred...

From sea to shining sea, Cailee Spaeny and Kirsten Dunst are capturing just how far America has fallen.
The duo, who are both Sofia Coppola darlings, lead Alex Garland’s action-drama “Civil War.” The feature marks Garland’s third film with A24. Garland previously told The Daily Telegraph that “Civil War” is connected to “Men” and “set at an indeterminate point in the future — just far enough ahead for me to add a conceit — and serves as a sci-fi allegory for our currently polarized predicament.”
The elusive logline for “Civil War” reads: “A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge.”
Dunst and Spaeny play war photographers, with Wagner Moura, Sonoya Mizuno, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman co-starring. Offerman, McKinley Henderson, and Mizuno all formerly appeared in Garland’s 2020 FX series “Devs.”

Kirsten Dunst stars as a war photographer in Alex Garland’s near-future-set feature “Civil War,” imagining a not-so-distant America at war with itself.
“Priscilla” breakout Cailee Spaeny also appears in the dystopian action thriller whose logline portends a “race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge.” Watch the first trailer below.
Garland, whose last film was the horror allegory “Men” starring Jessie Buckley, writes and directs the politically charged thriller. Wagner Moura, Sonoya Mizuno, and Stephen McKinley Henderson also star. Nick Offerman, who appeared in Garland’s 2020 FX series “Devs” along with McKinley Henderson and Mizuno, plays the United States president as seen in the trailer. The first footage suggests this is Garland’s most expansive film yet, spanning the U.S. as it tears itself apart, with Dunst portraying a journalist.

This article contains spoilers for “Shortcomings.”
Randall Park says he never thought of himself as a leader before he directed his debut feature film, “Shortcomings,” out Friday via Sony Pictures Classics.
“I’ve been in numerous situations where I’ve been in a leadership position throughout my life, and I’ve always enjoyed it,” he says, “but I never saw myself as one. I always just saw myself as doing my own thing.”
Park, best known for his work as an actor on “Fresh Off the Boat,” “The Interview,” “WandaVision” and “Always Be My Maybe,” first picked up Adrian Tomine’s graphic novel “Shortcomings” 16 years ago. The story, which follows Berkeley-based cinephile Ben Tanaka as he navigates souring relationships with his girlfriend, Miko, and best friend, Alice, resonated with Park, because it seemed to address and reflect real-life conversations and issues head-on. Ben doesn’t shy away from expressing his...

Not many directors start out with a voice wholly their own, but Katsuhito Ishii's “Promise of August” is a strikingly unique debut from one of Japan's more singular auteurs. It has its fair share of freshman missteps, and there's an unpolished quality to the plotting and performances, but it establishes itself from the opening frame as an off-kilter comedy with a genuine point of view; a confident beginning to a decades-long career.

There is a lot to be said about consuming a long-run manga series, spending years following the exploits of your favorite characters, and seeing your collection grow. Many of the titles with the most accolades manage to weave these long expansive stories that make them fan favorites and generate a lot of conversation within the fandom.
However, single-volume manga offers its benefits and the often under-touted format forces its creators to make a strong impact within the confines of a short narrative story. Personally, these shorter series make up some of my all-time favorite reads as well as act as perfect starting points to recommend to others who are interested in the medium but are unwilling to commit to dozens of volumes. Furthermore, these titles are ideal for revisits, casual re-reads on a nice day outside, or lounging at home.
In no particular order, here are 12 outstanding single-volume manga releases...

“Mizuno, the daughter of a mayoral candidate, is desperate to escape the suffocating pressure and scrutiny of smalltown life. Chayama, the heiress of the tea company Chayama-en, is adamantly walking down the path laid out for her, despite being forced to atone for her family’s apparent misdeeds. Yet in the bubble of the school’s third-floor guidance counseling room-away from rumors, watchful eyes, and their feuding families-they’re simply Mizuno and Chayama, two teenagers who find comfort and hope in each other.
