A few years before directing Dracula and Freaks, Tod Browning made a silent horror film titled London After Midnight. Starring Lon Chaney as “The Hypnotist,” the 65-minute film was distributed by MGM in December of 1927; though audiences saw it upon release, it’s likely that everyone who did is no longer with us. Sadly, the last known copy was destroyed in the infamous MGM vault fire of 1967, which tragically resulted in the loss of many classic films.
We may never lay eyes on Tod Browning’s London After Midnight, but those who’ve been salivating to experience it may be excited to hear that a full-cast audio drama is on the way.

Features the voices of: Joe Thomas, Elanor Tomlinson, Hugh Bonneville, Celia Imrie, Santiago Winder, Dan Starkey, Sean Bean | Written by Jordi Gasull, Javier López Barreira | Directed by Juan Jesús García Galocha
Within an Egyptian underworld, renowned chariot racer Thut (Joe Thomas) lives satisfied with his status as a local celebrity and bachelor. That changes when he’s selected to marry Princess Nefer (Elanor Tomlinson), which includes looking after a wedding ring he must keep safe under penalty of losing his eyes and tongue. Despite neither party wishing to marry, they must journey into 21st-century London when the ring is stolen by archaeologist Lord Sylvester Carnaby (Hugh Bonneville).
Director Juan Jesús García Galocha makes his feature debut with Mummies, a Spanish animation which has subsequently been dubbed for English audiences. What unfolds is an 88-minute feature with few surprises, including obvious gags such as texting via chiselling and the same pose being repeatedly used.

"The only way to get it back is to… go the world of the living." Warner Bros UK has revealed an official trailer for an animated kids movie called Mummies, another of these cheesy direct-to-video creations that is somehow getting a theatrical release in the UK next year. "Warner Bros. Pictures presents a production of 4Cats Pictures Sl, Anangu Grup Slu and Moomios Movie Aie, with the collaboration of Atresmedia Cine, with the participation of Movistar+ and with the collaboration of TV3." This clearly borrows the character design and family setup from the popular animated series Hotel Transylvania, but with mummies instead. The mummy family ends up in present-day London and embarks on a wacky and hilarious journey in search of an old ring that was stolen by a British archaeologist. Yes, teach kids what really happened! The English-language voice cast includes Joe Thomas, Eleanor Tomlinson, Santiago Winder, Celia Imrie,...

The rumours were true. After weeks of not-quite-denials and protestations of ignorance from David Tennant and Catherine Tate, the BBC has officially confirmed their return to Doctor Who: “One of the most loved pairings in Doctor Who’s history have reunited and are filming scenes that are due to air in 2023 to coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary celebrations”.
“The Doctor and Donna parted ways when the Doctor had to wipe Donna’s memory, making her forget him, in order to save her life. He left her family with a warning: if ever she remembers, she will die. But with the two coming face to face once more, the big question is, just what brings the Doctor and Donna back together?
Note the wording above: “scenes”, “coincide with”, “celebrations” plural. Nowhere in the language does the press release explicitly confirm that Tennant and Tate will appear as guest...

Doctor Who began life as a time-travelling sci-fi show with a historical bias and an educational bent. One thing – or, rather, one race – changed all of that: The Daleks. Those oppressive pepper pots gave the public a taste for the fearsome, the far-off and the fantastic, and the following five decades would be stacked with all sorts of aliens and monsters, from the sub-slime to the Drashig-ulous, and everything in between.
A new showrunner always wants to put their stamp on the series, but if novelty is vital to Doctor Who, then so is nostalgia. The allure of bringing back an old foe to put face-to-face with a Doctor’s new face is too strong to resist. At first, Chris Chibnall let Jodie Whittaker settle into her performance unburdened by the baggage of monsters past, but it wasn’t long before the Daleks,...

Emily Cook is a huge Doctor Who fan. She has been since 2005 when, as a young girl, her parents suggested she join them to watch the return of a sci-fi show they had loved back in the day. ‘That sounds boring,’ thought Emily – and then she reluctantly sat down in front of ‘Rose‘, the debut episode of Russell T Davies’s revamped Doctor Who, and the rest is history.
“It was the most exciting thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” she says, “it really just drew me in… From the moment you see the shot zoom down to planet Earth and Rose is in her bedroom and she whacks the alarm, I was just hooked.”
Emily became so obsessed with Who, in fact, that during her English degree she persuaded a contact to get her work experience on the show’s official publication, Doctor Who Magazine, which had...

As part of the writing staff since 2005, former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat wrote for all of the modern Doctors up to Peter Capaldi, as well as a bunch of the others he brought back from time to time. He handed over the reins of the show to successor Chris Chibnall back in 2017, who then cast Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, but now, Moffat is able to add Whittaker to the list of Doctors he’s covered, as a new short story from the writer has been shared online.
The tale, titled “The Terror of the Umpty Ums,” was published on the BBC’s Doctor Who website earlier today. It begins with an alien being called Karpagnon in the guise of a young boy called David. To say any more would be to spoil it, as – like we know to expect from all Moffat’s work – the story is...

The Doctor Who fan community has really come together since we all went into quarantine, with various livestream screenings of beloved episodes keeping us entertained. First of all, “The Day of the Doctor” got the treatment, with writer Steven Moffat and star Dan Starkey sharing a hilarious new intro for the anniversary special. Then it was “Rose,” which aired 15 years ago last week. For that, ex-showrunner Russell T. Davies not only wrote a short prequel to the episode, but also released an even longer sequel story which reveals the untold tale of what happens next.
As fans will know, “Rose” was the first installment in the modern era of Who, introducing us to the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler as they battled the Nestene Consciousness and its army of living plastic mannequins. Obviously, the heroes defeat the alien monster in the end. However, this sequel reveals that the Nestene managed...

The world is in trouble, so obviously the Doctor has returned to help us. This morning, the official Doctor Who social media accounts shared a brand new video featuring Jodie Whittaker in character as the Thirteenth Doctor, which sees her offering some much needed words of encouragement in these difficult times.
The video, filmed remotely, showcases Whittaker in full costume “self-isolating” in a closet, with the Time Lord apparently hiding from an army of Sontarans. Check it out in the tweet below:

Over the weekend, housebound Whovians lifted their spirits by holding a global rewatch of Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor.” Stars of the show – such as Osgood actress Ingrid Oliver – even got involved, live-tweeting their reactions. Best of all, though, was the arrival of a brand new introduction to the episode, starring (the voice of) Dan Starkey and written by ex-showrunner Steven Moffat.
The rewatch occurred at 7Pm U.K. time this past Saturday, so Starkey dropped the special intro on his Twitter account shortly before it was time to hit play. The hilarious skit sees the actor reprise his beloved character Strax with the help of a pint-sized stuffed toy. Moffat clearly had fun getting topical, too, with the script making references to the most recent season of the series.

Tom Riley has admitted he would love to reprise Robin Hood in a new episode of Doctor Who.
The Da Vinci's Demons star played the mythic hero in last year's 'Robot of Sherwood' and told Digital Spy that he would "do it again in a minute".
"I know with Matt Smith, they would bring back 'all the gang' - Jenny (Catrin Stewart) and Strax (Dan Starkey) and all that lot would reappear in his finales," Riley said. "So I'm not against the idea.
"It's tough, because the character is so out there that I don't quite know how he'd fit into all of space and time. But I would do it in an instant."
Riley described his co-star Peter Capaldi as an "incredible Doctor" - having worked with the actor on one of his earliest outings as the Time Lord.
"It was great to bounce off him and watch him...

As most of us Whovians and ComicMixers know, BBC America became the All Doctor Who All The Wibbly Wobbly Timey Winey Stuff network this past week in honor of the premiere of Season 9 – which, as I write this, airs tonight, Saturday, September 19. So I pretty much kept my TV tuned to channel 101 (the BBC America station on my cable system), except for some episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Hardball with Chris Matthews – oh, and the first half-hour of the Repugnantican debate on CNN, of which the less I have to say about that sorry affair the better, except that it disgusted me, and I returned to the All Doctor Who All The Wibbly Wobbly Timey Winey Stuff with relief.
So here’s a rundown of my opinions of random episodes in the lives of the Doctor.

Companions new and old combine as Strax makes the transition to the world of Big Finish's Doctor Who audio adventures…
While rumours of a Paternoster Gang Doctor Who spin-off have been floating around for ages, no one could have predicted this – an audio production that teams up Dan Starkey’s Strax with Tom Baker-era companions Jago and Litefoot, played by Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter (they first appeared in Tom Baker’s The Talons Of Weng-Chiang in 1977).
While classic companions are normally fair game to Big Finish (indeed, there's already 9 series worth of Jago and Litefoot material), Strax’s inclusion here makes him the latest in a very-recently-established trend that has seen the Torchwood cast, the main show's Unit characters, Alex Kingston’s River Song, and Ian McNiece’s Winston Churchill all swap the televisual realm for Big Finish audio adventures, all in the space of the last year.

Doctor Who's irascible Sontaran butler Strax is getting his own spinoff - on audio.
In news so exciting your puny human minds might not be able to handle it, the fan-favourite character (played by Dan Starkey) will feature in a new adventure from Big Finish.
Big Finish produce a wide range of Doctor Who audio productions - with 'new series' releases featuring Unit and River Song also in the offing.
In a new 2-disc special - coming in November - Strax will team-up with Victorian investigators Jago and Litefoot.

We close the curtain on Inside No. 9's second series pick n’ mix of twisted delights with a scary setting for the finale...
This review contains spoilers.
2.6 The Seance
Looking suspiciously similar to series 1’s closer The Harrowing, Seance Time opened with a big creepy house on a suburban road, a young female Pov character walking into the building with hesitation, and some really dated interior décor. If you’re a devoted viewer of the show, this might have made you feel right at home; you may have found the house, and genre, familiar. The last episode of this run of Inside No. 9 was a return to juicy horror for the series, but any similarities to what’s gone before were just a starting point for a tale that switched from familiar horror set-ups to a look behind the curtain/camera, before turning right back around to something unsettling for a last spine-jolter.
This review contains spoilers.

The last episode of this run of Inside No. 9 was a return to juicy horror for the series, but any similarities to what’s gone before were just a starting point for a tale that switched from familiar horror set-ups to a look behind the curtain/camera, before turning right back around to something unsettling for a last spine-jolter.

Doctor Who has debuted its latest menacing monster - an armoured antagonist that looks something like a grasshopper crossed with a tank.
In over 50 years, the world's longest-running sci-fi series has introduced us to hundreds of weird and wonderful creatures - but which is the best?
After much debate, here's our definitive ranking of the most memorable and terrifying monsters from 1963 to 2015 (and we're not counting humanoid wrongdoers, so no Master!).
Read on, then join the debate in the comments below...
15. The Haemovores
1980s Doctor Who can sometimes come in for an unfair drubbing - but there was still plenty of imagination, wit and inventive horror on show when the show was at its best.
'The Curse of Fenric' - airing as part of the final 'classic' series in 1989 - is a strong case for the defence, introducing the vampiric Haemovores - a species of evolved humans who lurked eerily...

This day has been an emotional rollercoaster.
The facts and details of the Christmas episode have been kept strictly secret, and for good reason. Rumors flew that Jenna Coleman was leaving the series just as the new season was a-borning, and her go-to answer for the events of the special was “If you know if I’m staying with the series, it’ll ruin the ending”. A spectacularly surprising cameo, a hilarious guest star, and a plot that keeps unfolding like a fried onion makes for a ripping yarn for the holiday. But for most of the year, we were never sure or not if this was to be Clara’s…

For fans around the world, the Doctor Who Christmas Special is as much a holiday tradition as turkey, presents, and berating global climate change for eliminating any possibility for a white Christmas. This year’s entry, “Last Christmas,” is the series’ tenth annual holiday adventure, and after two years and two highly consequential chapters involving the first post-Amy & Rory episode and the passing of the torch from Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi, we might be forgiven if we expected tears and not a generally pleasing and jolly episode. Not helping were rumors that current companion Jenna Coleman would take her leave of life in the Tardis in “Last Christmas,” and with such an ominous title, who could blame a Whovian for thinking the worst?
Adding potential insult to probable injury was that there seemed to be another companion waiting in the wings: Santa Claus. Nick Frost already appeared as Father Christmas...

Peter Capaldi's first Christmas special in the Doctor Who lead role came laden with tangerines. But was it any good?

Last Christmas
"A skeleton man, and a girl in her nightie"
It's one heck of a gamble to go for an hour long Doctor Who Christmas special, where all but a few minutes at the end turn out to be a dream. Yet that's just what Steven Moffat pulled off with his far improved Yuletide episode, Last Christmas.
As he confirmed at the Q&A after the press screening, everything you see in the episode, from the first scene onwards, is strictly a dream, up until the finale, and the placing of Last Christmas' final tangerine. A poignant tangerine, that also seems to suggest that Santa is real. That's a mystery solved, then.

We now know that the Twelfth Doctor and Clara Oswald will return to our screens in Last Christmas, written by Steven Moffat and directed by Paul Wilmshurst, which is set to air in the show’s traditional Christmas Day time slot as the centrepiece of BBC One’s yuletide festivities.

Peter Capaldi is off and flying in the role he’s been practicing for since he was four years old. The Paternoster gang is here to cushion the blow of the wild turns in tone and character, there’s a well-hidden piece of chalk, and a dinosaur explodes.

So, there’s this dinosaur in Victorian London. The Paternoster Gang appear to investigate, and are only slightly surprised to learn that The Doctor is involved, by dint of watching said dinosaur cough the Tardis up like Elizabeth Taylor hocking up a chicken bone. The Doctor has regenerated, and as is traditional after sais process, his mental faculties, including the ability to pilot his time capsule, are a bit dodgy. He exits both the ship and consciousness in rapid succession,...

Peter Capaldi made his much-anticipated Dr. Who debut this past weekend, stepping into the Tardis as the 12th Doctor. Did he live up to expectations, and did the season premiere episode “Deep Breath” give year 8 a strong start? Read on to find out more, but beware of spoilers.
The eighth season of Doctor Who aired this weekend and we finally got to see Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. Most of the pre-episode buzz had been highly positive for Capaldi. Now that we’ve actually see him in the episode “Deep Breath”, the question of every Whovian’s tongue is “Was he any good?”
Fear not fans. Despite having to meet excessively high expectations, Capaldi does not disappoint. It’s hard to get a handle on what his version of the doctor will be like since the character spends most of the episode in a post-regenerative state of confusion, but he...

Peter Capaldi assumed the title of Time Lord in the 90-minute season premiere of Doctor Who, but we didn’t really meet the new Doctor until the final act. Fresh off a traumatic regeneration, the (debatably) 12th articulation of the 2000-year-old extraterrestrial hero spent most of his too-long, unevenly paced debut suffering from fuzzy memory, identity flux, and disorientation panic, much like that temporally displaced, discombobulated, Tardis-snacking T-Rex that found itself chucked forward across epochs to Victorian London.
As a result, it was hard to draw a bead on the Doctor and how Capaldi’s take would differ from that of his predecessor,...

Lucky attendees of Doctor Who series eight's Cardiff world premiere, taking place at St David's Hall on the 7th of August, don't have long to find out the who, what, when, where and why of this first image. The rest of us will have to sit patiently until Saturday the 23rd of August, when Deep Breath airs on BBC One.

Brace yourselves, Whovians: Long-running cult obsession Doctor Who returns to BBC America on Aug. 23 with a new star, Peter Capaldi, and a new attitude. Compared with Matt Smith’s previous Doctor, Capaldi’s lead character is “a lot fiercer,” says Jenna Coleman, who plays his traveling companion, Clara Oswald. “This man is a total adrenaline junkie.”
If you don’t count John Hurt’s one-and-done performance in last year’s 50th-anniversary special, Capaldi is the 12th actor to play the show’s Doctor, a two-hearted alien who travels through space—and time—in his ship, the Tardis, and periodically regenerates his outward form.

Indie Spotlight Review: Nobody Can Cool
by Heather Wixson
Nobody Can Cool is the rather impressive directorial debut from up-and-coming filmmaking duo Dpyx, Marcy Boyle and Rachel Holzman, who crafted a blisteringly taut and thoughtful indie crime thriller with a palpable sense of tension from start to finish. A gritty and engaging tale of deceit, violence and desperation, Nobody Can Cool is anchored by a breakout performance by Nick Principe (best known from his work in the Laid to Rest series, Madison County and...

Peter Capaldi can be seen filming some of his first Doctor Who scenes in new on-set pictures.
Capaldi - who replaced Matt Smith as the BBC drama's lead at Christmas - is currently filming his first episode, with transmission planned for late 2014.
Jenna Coleman will return as companion Clara in Doctor Who's eight series, which will also feature a reappearance from recurring allies Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Jenny (Catrin Stewart) and Strax (Dan Starkey).
Head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat has described Capaldi's new incarnation of the Doctor as an "old beast" distinct from Matt Smith's "puppy dog" Time Lord.
Moffat has penned Doctor Who's eighth series premiere, which will be directed by Sightseers and A Field in England filmmaker Ben Wheatley.
A ninth series is also expected to air as a single uninterrupted run on BBC One in 2015.

Now that Season 8 of "Doctor Who" is in production, pictures are starting to show up online from those who happen to see the filming. If you don't want to know anything about what to expect from the early episodes of Season 8, stop reading this article.
There aren't many details about the episodes released, but a couple familiar faces will be making their returns to the show. Pictures shared on Twitter show both Strax (Dan Starkey) and Vastra (Neve McIntosh) appearing.
As for the Doctor himself, there also video of Peter Capaldi in a nightgown, riding a horse. Actually, he's riding a stunt horse in the scene, likely because having him flying down a street on a real one seems a bit dangerous for the new Doctor.
There's also video of his stunt double galloping on a real horse. A Flickr user was able to get several photos of Capaldi throughout...
