Mark Stanley is superb in this unflinching real-life story of a man left alienated from society as a result of a childhood ordeal
Sulphur and White is a painful, disturbing and absorbing episodic drama based on the life of Nspcc campaigner and abuse survivor David Tait – played here by Mark Stanley. As a young man in his 20s, Tait is a London financial trader with the sharp suits and dead-eyed demeanour of Patrick Bateman, the reptilian monster of American Psycho. But we can see that this master of the universe is the way he is because of a terrible childhood wound. Growing up in South Africa, his unhappy mum (Anna Friel) was bullied by an insecure dad (Dougray Scott) who, nervously keen to fit in with the social circle, allowed his teen son David to work part-time job at the petrol station where he was being abused by a paedophile ring of local men.

To celebrate the release of Sulphur and White, which hits UK cinemas this week, we had the pleasure of sitting down the film’s cast, director and real-life subject to chat about its release, its huge importance and why the time is right for the story to be told.
Directed by Julian Jarrold (Brideshead Revisited), the film tells the true-life story of David Tait, a man who suffered horrific childhood trauma and found solace years later in the redemptive power of love and climibing Mount Everest for the Nspcc. Jarold talks about his friendship and admiration for him whilst Tait talks about watching the filmmaking process from afar and watching the final result.
In addition, we spoke to cast members Mark Stanley (who portrays Tait in the film), Emily Beecham and Dougray Scott about their response to the script and David’s story, the film sensitively and thoughtfully tackling the...

This year’s festivities kicked off with with a bang with the opening night gala which presented Alice Winocour’s beautifully atmospheric drama Proxima. Winocour was also present after the main event for a Q&a session in which she talked about her experiences of working with a multi-national team of actors and technicians.
Day 2 was marked by the Scottish premier screening of Lorcan Finnegan’s brilliantly unsettling sci-fi drama Vivarium. Finnegan and star of the film Imogene Poots were also there to introduce the film.
The festival also welcomed Icelandic director Grímur Hákonarson who was there to introduce his new film The County. Hákonarson also stayed afterwards for a short Q&a session. The County is part of a wider Icelandic strand at this year’s Gff. Other films in this strand also feature the brilliant A white, White Day by Hlynur Palmason.

Two Canadian men have learned they were switched at birth more than 40 years ago at a hospital in Manitoba. According to CBC News, Leon Swanson and David Tait are both 41 years old and were raised by each other’s biological mother after being born three days apart in 1975 at the Norway House Indian Hospital about 280 miles north of Winnipeg. DNA tests confirmed the switch. “We don’t have words,” he said. “Forty years gone … just distraught, confused angry.” See Photos: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston Charm Kids in Hospital as Thor and Loki However, this is the second case of infants being.
