“Up From the Streets,” a history and celebration of the music of New Orleans hosted by Grammy-winning artist Terence Blanchard, will have a “virtual cinema release” starting May 15 with proceeds from ticket sales benefiting struggling Louisiana musicians.
The film, subtitled “New Orleans: The City of Music,” debuted in October at the New Orleans Film Festival, where it was nominated as best feature Louisiana documentary. It was also nominated as best feature documentary at the Los Angeles Pan African Film Festival and at the DC Independent Film Festival, received an Award of Excellence at the IndieFest Film Festival, and was Gold Award winner for best feature documentary at the Houston WorldFest Film Festival.
Viewers can purchase tickets from participating local cinemas and watch the film at home, “supporting their favorite independent movie theaters as they practice social distancing and self-quarantine,” said a spokesman for London-based distributor Eagle Rock Entertainment.

So, How Was Your Decade is a series in which the decade’s most innovative musicians answer our questionnaire about the music, culture, and memorable moments that shaped their decade. We’ll be rolling these pieces out throughout December.
Early in the 2010s, rock & roll revivalists Low Cut Connie were a band without a home, releasing their own records after they received rejection slips from 20 different major labels. “At the time, those were all terrible blows,” singer Adam Weiner told Rolling Stone in 2018, “but now I see it as a blessing.

If you don’t know me, you might not know how into theme parks I am. Right now I don’t live near any of the big headline making ones (I’m going to have to fly into La to visit Harry Potter at Universal just like the rest of the world), but every chance I get to check out a theme park, especially a Disney-run one, is worth the time.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida (formaly Disney MGM Studios, at least the last time I got to go) is adding a bunch of Star Wars themed stuff to its park that got announced this week.
Here’s the press release fun-town corporate speak (in italics):

Another Oscar winner is coming to HBO: Anthony Hopkins has been cast in the cable drama’s TV reboot of the sci-fi classic Westworld.
The casting will mark the first potential regular TV gig for the acclaimed Silence of the Lambs and Thor actor, and continues the trend of Academy Award winners taking small-screen roles. He will be joined in the project by actress Evan Rachel Wood (Once and Again, True Blood).
No, Hopkins is not playing “the Yul Brynner role.” But the descriptions for both his character and Wood’s shed some insight into the secretive project’s storyline.

When a petition gets 25,000 signatures or more and is filled out on WhiteHouse.gov, a response is required from the White House. A petition from the Galactic Empire of Star Wars was recently submitted for a Death Star to be built for the planet Earth. It ended up getting 30,000 signatures and the White House responded unsurprisingly denying the request. Why? Because it would cost $850,000,000,000,000,000, and America just doesn't have that kind of money, and the current administration doesn't really support blowing up other planets, "Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?"
Well, the Galactic Empire has responded to the White House's denial, which you can read below...
Imperial Center, Coruscant – The overwhelming military superiority of the Galactic Empire has been confirmed once again by the recent announcement by the President of the United States...

In America, if enough people sign a petition requesting something from the White House, the Us government has to respond. A few weeks ago, people took advantage of that by asking the White House to begin construction of a Death Star by 2016. The White House issued a response, stating that America has no plans to build a Death Star. The reasons given were that construction would cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000, the administration doesn't support blowing up planets, and building a Death Star is pointless since it "can be exploited by a one-man starship." The Galactic Empire has now written a response to the White House letter. It states: Imperial Center, Coruscant - The overwhelming military superiority of the Galactic Empire has been confirmed once again by the recent announcement by the President of the United States that his nation would not attempt to build a Death Star, despite the bellicose demands...

Just days after the White House rejected a fan petition proposing that the United States build its very own Death Star by 2016, the official Star Wars website has issued a haughty response, purportedly on behalf of the Galactic Empire.
"It is doubtless that such a technological terror in the hands of so primitive a world would be used to upset the peace and sanctity of the citizens of the Galactic Empire," reads the statement, attributed to Governor Wilhuff Tarkin of the Outer Rim Territories. "Such destructive power can only be...

The White House is not building a version of the Death Star. While it seems like this should go without saying, the Obama administration hilariously responded to a petition signed by over 34,000 people on the We the People website asking the government to build the "Star Wars" space station.
Well, the Galactic Empire isn't too happy about this news. Via StarWars.com, the evil Empire has "written" a response to the White House's "This Isn't The Petition Response You're Looking For," which you can read here:
Imperial Center, Coruscant - The overwhelming military superiority of the Galactic Empire has been confirmed once again by the recent announcement by the President of the United States that his nation would not attempt to build a Death Star, despite the bellicose demands of the people of his tiny, aggressive planet. The 2005 adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy divided fans. Mark takes a look back...
In 2005, director Garth Jennings and producer Nick Goldsmith, better known collectively as Hammer and Tongs, finally brought Disney's long-gestating film version of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy to the big screen. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. But as this article will contend, on the subject of the 2005 cinematic adaptation of the same name, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy would have this to say: mostly harmless.
This is not a popular opinion amongst those fans who have derided the film ever since its release, but we don't intend to persuade people that they were wrong about this version of the beloved Douglas Adams story. But it was liked by some, including this writer, and so it's worth re-evaluating.

Adapted from Georges Perec's novel of the same name. Structured as a filmic sestina, Perec and Queysanne reimagine the framework of the novel while maintaining much of the original narration (read by Shelly Duvall in the English version!).

The Star Wars Holiday Special was broadcast in its entirety only once, and has never been released on VHS, DVD or Blu-ray (although it isn't hard to find bootleg copies online and at local comic book conventions). For those who haven't seen the special, here is a short description from wikipedia [1]: In the storyline that ties the special together, Chewbacca and Han Solo visit Kashyyyk, Chewbacca's home world, to celebrate Life Day. Along the way they are pursued by agents of the Galactic Empire, who are searching for members of the Rebel Alliance on the planet. The special introduces three members of Chewbacca's family: his father Attichitcuk, his wife Mallatobuck, and his son Lumpawarrump. During the special, scenes also take place in outer space and in spacecraft including the Millennium Falcon and an Imperial Star Destroyer. The variety-show segments and cartoon introduce a few other locales, such as a...

It’s lucky 13 for the Antimatter Film Festival in Victoria, BC. That is, their 13th annual fest is all set to run on Oct 8-16. That’s nine mind-blowing nights of experimental short films, live film performances and culture-shattering documentaries.
The fest kicks off on the 8th with a 16mm screening of Sergei Eisenstein’s classic silent film Battleship Potemkin that will be accompanied by a live soundtrack by DJ-son Bitter Herbs [Jason Flower]. The people’s revolution never sounded so funky! Then, the fest concludes on the 16th with the event “Uzos [Underwater Zombies from Outer Space]” and will feature performances by Ryan Beattie, Atomic Vaudeville, Slut Revolver, Wes Borg and more.
Smooshed between those two events will be the debut feature film by acclaimed ethnographic filmmaker Ben Russell, Let Each One Go Where They May, which documents the amazing recreation of a bold escape made by slaves. Other feature length documentaries screening are: Teen Routines,...

The 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival is set to run June 17-27 in a brand new location. Oh, it’s still in L.A, but it’s moving across town, from Westwood — where it’s been held the past few years — all the way over to Downtown.
The main “hub” for the fest will be the new L.A. Live complex, but there will also be screenings at other locations, such as the Downtown Independent and Redcat theaters. The city is really trying to build downtown up into a major arts and culture hub, so the festival moving there fits in with that agenda. Film Independent, the organization that runs Laff, also runs the annual Independent Spirit Awards, an event that also moved downtown — from Santa Monica — this year.
On Bad Lit, I tend to like to put up festival lineups that include days and times of screenings. However, since I...

A video popped up on YouTube about a week ago revealing the first tidbits of a collaborative effort between the “Robot Chicken” writing team and “Spore” creator Maxis. Now the word is officially out: when “Spore’s” first gameplay-enhancing expansion pack, “Galactic Adventures,” hits shelves on June 23, it will come packing – among other things, of course – 10 adventures which were conceived and written by the “Robot Chicken” team.
Let’s back up for a minute and talk about “Galactic Adventures.” In case you didn’t know, the expansion pack will add a considerable amount of depth to the game’s virtually endless Space phase. The pack will introduce a new concept to “Spore”: adventures. Using an entirely new and surprisingly robust set of editing tools, players will be able to build Space phase missions set on the surfaces of the galaxy’s many planets.
