Regular readers of this space know my first true love is the city of Chicago, and that I’ll use any excuse to cop a visit to my fatherland. That’s where I was this past week, and I did not need an excuse. The 15th annual Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention was in town, and, therefore, so was I.
It’s a great chance to meet up with old friends and make a couple new ones, all the while gawking at ancient publications printed on ever-deteriorating paper, more permanent facsimile reprints of same, and brand new efforts that replicate the mood, techniques and often the characters of those thrilling days of yesteryear. As my pal Jim Wisniewski says, the comradery echoes the days when comic book conventions were social occasions accessible to all… and were actually about comic books.
For the few of you who may be unaware...

Man, Dark Horse Comics just won’t slow down. And why should they? In addition to several exciting Star Wars projects on their plate, the premiere indie publisher keeps introducing fantastic original work with a quirky bent: Matt Kindt’s Mind Mgmt, John Arcudi’s The Creep, Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra’s Colder (best mini-series of the year, if you ask me), Brian Wood’s The Massive, and a new Bprd: Vampire series reuniting Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba, just to name a few. Here are three more recently announced projects that should stir feathers in the world of surreal horror.

It used to be, when I was about to go home from the San Diego Comic-Con or some other show that required a stupidly long plane ride, I’d drop by the dealer’s area (you know, that ever-shrinking portion of the main floor where people would actually sell comic books at a “comic book convention”) and I’d blow about twenty bucks on stuff to read on the return trip. These purchases were almost exclusively of “funny” comic books.
Sadly, we have come to the point where, in the world of contemporary comics, the phrase “funny comic books” has evolved from a redundancy to an oxymoron and the funniest comic around these days is Deadpool – a title with a death count high on the Tarantino scale.
No, the funny books I’m referring to were, well, funny. One of my favorites was Bud Sagendorf’s Popeye, a somewhat maligned...

Let’s pretend for a moment that you, an FM reader, are a fan of classic movie monsters. You know, stuff like Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Wolfman, Frankenstein’s Monster, etc.
Got it? Ok, good. Just stay with me here.
Now let’s also pretend that you’re a fan of horror films like those that featured, I don’t know, the monsters I mentioned above.
Wow, you’re really good at this game!
Now that you’re all good and hyped up, prepare yourself for an additional dose of excitement if you also happen to be a fan of comic books. Sometime in September, Monsterverse will be releasing a comic anthology entitled Tales from the Grave. Bela Lugosi (do I really need to tell you who he is? I mean, seriously) will be taking on hosting duties for the horror romp.
