I find it ironic how despite existing on a planet where pretty much every living thing originated in the ocean, one of humanity’s most widespread fears is thalassophobia – the fear of the deep ocean. Whether it’s some form of genetic memory that continues to haunt our species or a natural reaction to witnessing one of the deadliest ecosystems in the world, it’s no surprise storytellers have been taking advantage of this fear for millennia.
And while Jaws obviously dominates the conversation when it comes to underwater horror in film, there are still some intrepid filmmakers that dare to explore other kinds of sea-borne thrills. For example, Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin’s upcoming Deep Water looks like it’s going to take us on another roller-coaster ride directly into shark-infested waters. However, since there’s still no official release date, we’ve decided to come up...

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in March, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
From dinosaurs to a killer clown, here are five hidden horror gems and deep cuts that you can check out in March 2023.
The Fantasist (1986)
Directed by Robin Hardy.
Despite her family’s mixed reaction to her decision, Moira Harris‘ sheltered but curious character moves to Dublin to be a teacher. There she becomes the next target of a serial killer who gradually escalates from phone calls to murder. The protagonist of The Fantasist eventually suspects her pushy American neighbor (Timothy Bottoms) to be the culprit.

I never understood why Jurassic Park was the only dinosaur-related franchise to outlive the dino hysteria of the 90s. Don’t get me wrong, Spielberg’s classic is clearly the best movie to come out of that trend, but that doesn’t change the fact that dinosaurs as a concept are in the public domain and should have been featured in countless other films.
Fortunately for fans of all things prehistoric, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’s upcoming 65 (March 10th) promises a return to the Jurassic-Park-less thrills of completely original dinosaur movies. And with that in mind, we’ve come up with this list highlighting six of the best non-jp dinosaur thrillers for all your prehistoric media needs!
As usual, this list is purely based on personal opinion, but since this is Bloody Disgusting, we’ll be limiting entries to monster movies and thrillers. That means no Super Mario Bros...

The Dinosaur Project is the (fictional) story of a missing Congo expedition and the findings of the Cryptozoological Society to audiences around the world. The film features stunning recovered footage of creatures thought to be extinct for 65 million years. As the search for the missing crew continues, questions remain about the source of the missing footage and the manner in which it was discovered.
Before I go any further, heres the now-defacto disclaimer: This is a found-footage movie. And you all know how much I despise the sub-genre. When its done wrong its usually done Very wrong and when its good Well I cant remember the last time it was! What also works against The Dinosaur Project is that you just cant help but compare it to Jurassic Park...

When the list of directors for the upcoming sequel to "V/H/S" were announced, one name stuck out: Gareth Evans. A Welsh filmmaker working in Indonesia, Evans is best known as the director of the martial arts films "The Raid: Redemption" and "Merantau," and seems like a strange choice for a horror anthology. Although he will only co-direct a segment in "V/H/S 2" (along with Singaporean director Timo Tjahjanto), the choice reflects the dramatically shifting role of the found footage genre in modern day cinema. In 2012, found footage took a few promising steps out of the horror genre, expanding its reach to both superhero and party films ("Chronicle" and "Project X," respectively). Although "V/H/S" is explicitly a horror film (and the sequel will presumably be as well), Gareth Evans' involvement potentially adds martial arts action to the growing list of genres (which includes Sid Bennett's upcoming.

We have a gallery of new images and a trailer from the film, The Dinosaur Project, a “found-footage” movie about a group of cryptozoologists who enter the jungle to find the “Lochness monster of Africa.”
Here’s what the director, Sid Bennett told Bleeding Cool about the film’s style:
If you were going on a documentary expedition you would have a documentary cameraman and a documentary sound man and you would have high production value. You wouldn’t have the shaky camera that is associated with found footage. This premise means that if you are following an expedition with a TV crew, you are going to have moments where it is shot professionally and will have an epic feel to it, like big sweeping vistas. The movie has those elements that are not typical in found footage. The movie breathes.
That is what drove my style and this actually...

★☆☆☆☆ The found footage format is beginning to feel more than a little tired these days, no more so than in Sid Bennett's genre mash-up The Dinosaur Project (2012). Here we follow the apparent endeavours of the British Cryptozoological Society as they embark on an expedition into the dark heart of the Congo in search of an extinct plesiosaur. Seasoned explorer Jonathan Marchant (Richard Dillane) leads the team of intrepid explorers, only to discover that his teenage son Luke (Matt Kane) has snuck along for the ride.

If there is one thing you can say about Sid Bennett’s The Dinosaur Project, is that it is exactly what you would expect from a found footage orientated, British film about dinosaurs. And that, unfortunately, is not a positive acknowledgement.
The film begins as a couple of local inhabitants in the Congolese jungle find a bag which has tapes of footage within it, documenting a British group of explorers’ improbable journey into the jungle where they discovered a colony of dinosaurs. Amongst those ambitious explorers – who had set off to Africa based on sightings of an unidentifiable sea creature – are Marchant (Richard Dillane), his troublesome teenage son Luke (Matt Kane), Dr. Liz Draper (Natasha Loring), and Charlie (Peter Brooke), amongst others.
As the group’s helicopter crashes in the wilderness, they find themselves stranded, and as they delve deeper into the forest, they unearth a settlement of the creatures that had been presumed extinct,...

For the most part, found-footage films have largely been couched in the horror genre, and it’s always nice to see when they take a new direction.
Not only were we treated to the massive success story Chronicle this year, we’ve still got The Dinosaur Project to look forward to in just a few weeks’ time.
The trailer we saw earlier this month was more than enough to take us in, and now we’ve been sent over the new UK quad poster ahead of its release next month.

A new and admittedly less interesting exclusive quad poster for new British adventure thriller 'The Dinosaur Project' has arrived. It's not a patch on the previous quad, featured below, but just another reminder that the cool looking feature is set to hit UK theatres next month. The Sid Bennett helmed horror is somewhere between 'Jurassic Park' and 'Monsters' and uses the found footage style to showcase a small expedition group who discover a lost prehistoric world. It stars gorgeous blonde Brit Natasha Loring ('Beaver Falls') as well as Matt Kane ('The Cut'), Peter Brooke ('Wrong Turn 5''), Richard Dillane ('Argo') and Stephen Jennings ('Starship Troopers 3: Marauder'). Stumbling upon this little trailer took me by surprise, I must admit. Until this morning, I’d heard nothing of Sid Bennett’s new found footage flick, The Dinosaur Project, and after viewing the brief preview, I can’t understand how this one has flown under the radar as it has. The trailer looks pretty damn awesome, pitting man versus monster nearly too old to fathom. And, while the production looks a bit too polished (in my opinion) for a found footage flick, that doesn’t alter the fact that I really, really want to check this one out!

Studio Canal have released a new trailer for their movie, The Dinosaur Project. Not sure what to make of it but I do know that i’d quite like to watch out when it’s release August 10th. It stars Natasha Loring, Richard Dillane, Matt Kane, Peter Brooke, Stephen Jennings and is directed by Sid Bennett. It does seem odd that no one has done any other big budget dinosaur movie since Jurassic Park. Not that this looks especially big budget compared to the Jurassic Park franchise but it looks pretty impressive nonetheless.

There's been ghosts, super powered teens and giant monsters in found footage films, but now it's time for dinosaurs. In the film a father and son embark on an expedition in the Congo with a TV documentary crew in tow. The Dinosaur Project is the recovered footage showing stunning images of dinosaurs thought to be extinct for 65 million years. It sounds like John Hammond's creations are on the loose again! Honestly, this sounds interesting, but it looks a little hokey. It seems like the idea just wasn't executed well. Here's the trailer for SId Bennett's The Dinosaur Project from IGN: Sid Bennett directs and The Dinosaur Project and co-writes the film with Jay Basu. Back in May StudioCanal has announced The Dinosaur Project which has already commenced principal photography in South Africa. Yet to settle on a title, the IMDb is listing Peter Brooke (Red Lights, The Dark Knight) cast as "Charlie Rutherford", Natasha Loring as "Dr. Liz Draper" and Matt Kane. In November 2010, TV programmakers Sid Bennett and Tom Pridham and producer Nick Hill walked into the London office of StudioCanal with an idea for a movie "about a father-and-son documentary team who discover dinosaurs in the African jungle." They had an outline, a showreel, a budget, a plan for the vfx and a clear timetable to progress rapidly into production -- but no script. StudioCanal took the bait. Budget is under $16 million. Check out the official Afm synopsis and art for what's being described as "the most exciting dinosaur action movie since Jurassic Park!

The project is described as “Jurassic Park meets Blair Witch in the style of District 9.” But producer Nick Hill also notes: “It’s not grainy hand-held; it will look beautiful and crisp and clear.”

StudioCanal is moving forward on a thriller that's tentatively being referred to as the "Dinosaur Project." Creators Sid Bennett, Tom Pridham and Nick Hill pitched the company - with a nifty demo reel, apparently - on a single premise without knowing where the story would go. The gist? A father and son - out to make a documentary - discover dinos in Africa. So, StudioCanal teamed with Optimum Releasing. Bennett, Pridham and Hill - who have a background in Animal Planet and Discovery projects - sorted out the FX side and worked with Optimum to hash out the story beats. This all happened in a matter of weeks and now shooting this month in South Africa. I wonder if this will be the first "found footage" dinosaur flick...
