In Jonathan Mostow's 1997 thriller "Breakdown," Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan play a happily married couple driving their high-tech SUV from Boston to San Diego. By accident, they almost run into a pickup truck on the remote highways of Arizona. When Russell later meets the driver of the pickup (M.C. Gainey) at a gas station, tensions are high. Later still, when Russell and Quinlan are back on the road, their car suddenly stops. Quinlan offers to hitchhike into town to get help, while Russell stays with the SUV. It will be quite a while before they see each other again. It seems that Quinlan has been kidnapped! Russell has to drive around Arizona's remote backroads looking for clues, and eventually, he faces off against the kidnappers. "Breakdown" also stars the immortal J.T. Walsh, and a punky Jack Noseworthy.

What makes the film formally interesting, though, is the separation of voice and image. Burstein’s reliance on audio recordings of Taylor made in 1964 and 1985 foregrounds her remarkable voice over her blinding beauty, seen in stills and film clips. Taylor's voice, even at ages 32 and 53, can range from girlish and flirtatious to bawdy and shrill, sometimes within the same statement. When she describes how the AIDS crisis led...

One of the best and most devastating moments in "Star Wars" is Order 66 in "Revenge of the Sith." To close out the Clone Wars, the clone troopers that have fought beside the Jedi turn and shoot their commanders in the back, on orders from Chancellor Palpatine/Darth Sidious.
The most memorable death is Jedi Aayla Secura on the jungle planet Felucia, shot in the back by Clone Commander Bly and his brothers-in-arms. In one draft of the script (but not the finished film), Aayla is scouting for enemy droids and asking Bly for his input before he shoots, emphasizing her being taken by surprise. The Felucia scene would also feature Bly and the clones fragging Jedi Barriss Offee, but this was deleted, so the "Clone Wars" and "Tales of the Jedi" cartoons took that character in another direction.
That wasn't the only change to the scene. You see, in "Revenge of the Sith,...

This Star Wars article contains spoilers.
The return of Asajj Ventress in Star Wars: The Bad Batch is an intriguing new mystery for fans, especially those who read of her death in the 2015 novel Dark Disciple by Christie Golden, which is set during the Clone Wars, right before the events of Revenge of the Sith. In that book, she sacrificed herself to save her lover, Jedi Master Quinlan Vos, from Count Dooku’s Force lightning, but just an in-universe year after her death, she’s somehow back and meeting up with Clone Force 99 on The Bad Batch.
So, what’s behind her resurrection? It’s a mystery with no answer from Star Wars. But plenty of theories…
How Is Asajj Ventress Back?
Unsurprisingly, the prevailing theory regarding her return from the grave goes back to a specific moment in Dark Disciple. In the book, she and Vos team up to try and kill Dooku.

It’s hard to imagine we’ll get a better soundtrack this year than that for Jane Schoenbruen’s I Saw the TV Glow. Bringing together yeule, Frances Quinlan, Florist, King Woman, Caroline Polachek, Bartees Strange, Jay Som, The Weather Station, L’Rain, Drab Majesty, Sloppy Jane, and more, with Twin Peaks Roadhouse-esque musical performances in the movie, A24 has now announced a May 10 release for the soundtrack, a week after the film’s limited release and a week prior to its wide release. Timed with the announcement, they’ve now unveiled yeule’s cover of Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl,” a key motif throughout the film.
I said in my review, “Utterly hypnotic in rhythm from its very first scenes, we hear a haunting motif that will return: Yeule’s cover of Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl” as...

Emmy contender “Reality” (minimally) dramatizes Reality Winner’s arrest and interrogation by the FBI. The Nsa-linguist-turned-whistleblower received a record-long sentence, five years and three months, for stealing and disseminating classified documents related to Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Tina Satter’s verbatim stage adaptation of the FBI transcript, the curiously (un)punctuated “Is This A Room,” sought to restore some of the agency that was taken from Winner when statements she had made prior to being formally arrested were levied against her in court. Jessica Kiang (Variety) argues just as much, writing that the framework “proves that sometimes what you say can be used for you too.” The play’s filmed rendition, also directed by Satter, got positive write-ups and unanimous praise for lead Sydney Sweeney after premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival, where HBO purchased it for an undisclosed price. For East New York fans, CBS' finalization of its 2023-2024 schedule came with devastating news.
Since the network announced that the freshman cop drama was canceled, fan groups have organized petition signing and social media campaigns to save their beloved show.
It's a long shot, but let's hope it works. There are a ton of reasons East New York has a dedicated fan base; this show deserves an 11th-hour reprieve.
While there are many cop shows on the air, none was quite like this one.
Rather than focusing on the parts of the Big Apple that tourists usually frequent, this series took place in a lower-income, majority Black and Brown neighborhood.

If East New York had to wrap things up, this was how to do it.
East New York Season 1 Episode 21, they ended the official police business a few minutes early so that it could end with the 7-4 celebrating being together and the work they each do to make a difference in their community.
It underscored how important this series was and how huge a hole it'll leave in our hearts.
Throughout the hour, I was scared that Donaldson might get his way now that the series was ending. Thankfully, East New York ended on a happier note than that!
But could that man have been any more of an asshole? He claimed that Reigna was a "divisive" figure, but the only one doing any dividing was him.

Despite a sizable outcry from devoted fans, East New York ended its one-season run on CBS Sunday.
The Warner Bros. TV series from creators William Finkelstein and Mike Flynn wrapped with a sentimental gathering of its leads having one last drink together — Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (the terrific Amanda Warren), Assistant Chief John Suarez (Jimmy Smits), Det. Crystal Morales (Elizabeth Rodriguez), Det. Tommy Killian (Kevin Rankin), Officer Brandy Quinlan (breakout Olivia Luccardi), Officer Marvin Sandeford (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), Officer Andre Bentley (Lavel Schley) and Capt. Stan Yenko (Richard Kind).
Yenko gave a toast to Haywood, who thanked her for bringing him back onto the force where he “came to love it all over again.” His words brought Haywood to tears.
The episode wrapped up a double homicide from the previous episode in Ruskin Gardens, where Quinlan had been living as part of Haywood’s unique initiative to have officers live in crime-ridden areas.

East New York aired its finale this Sunday night, six days after CBS cancelled the freshman cop drama. Were viewers left with any cliffhangers that might never be resolved, if the show fails to find a new home?
The episode “Ruskin Roulette” picked up the morning after the shooting at the titular project that Quinlan calls home. Two were killed, including drug dealer Orlando, and another two were wounded: hoodlum Dwayne (who took a bullet in the arm), and Lorenzo’s daughter Ingrid (shot in a leg).

Regina's potential job loss was supposed to be the exciting end of East New York's first season.
But with the sad news that East New York has been canceled despite performing well in a difficult time slot, East New York Season 1 Episode 21 will now be its swan song.
It sucks that this gritty cop drama will soon be gone, but at least we get to spend one last hour with the cops of the 7-4.
The conflict between Regina and Suarez, brewing all season, will come to a head after a tragic shooting.
Spoilers say this incident will lead higher-ups to question Regina's leadership. If the series were returning, I'd guess Regina would win this battle -- if not now, then in the fall.

No! Not Ingrid!
I knew there had to be a reason Quinlan and Bentley kept running into Lorenzo and his young daughter. The encounters seemed random, but nothing on East New York is ever meaningless.
We found out what was happening during the final moments of East New York Season 1 Episode 20 when Ingrid got hit by a stray bullet during a shooting. The little girl will probably be all right, but now the shooter's on the run -- and it appears he's Thora's nephew. What a lead-in to the season finale!
Brandy's instincts were correct unless there's a last-minute twist, and Tyson's not the shooter.
I wasn't sure that confronting Thora about Tyson was a good idea. Brandy's worked hard to gain Thora's trust after a rocky start, and coming at her hard about her nephew's record could have undone all the progress made over the year.

The good news: East New York is back.
The bad news: There are only two episodes left this season, and as of now, there isn't yet any word about whether the series will be back in the fall.
Still, the penultimate hour will be explosive! East New York Season 1 Episode 20 spoilers suggest a Huge fallout between Regina and Sean, and possibly one with Suarez.
I'm here for all this, especially the Regina/Suarez conflict. This has been building steadily throughout the season as Suarez tries to navigate his political ambitions and personal beliefs.
In a way, Regina needs him to be concerned with politics. She doesn't give a damn about elections and mayoral approval ratings, but if the powers that be hate her ideas enough, they'll replace her, and then she won't be able to reform the police department at all.

We’re finally going to get to meet a character we’ve only thus far heard about on East New York, and based on TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the March 12 episode, we’re going to enjoy seeing more of her. Debi Mazar joins the cast in a recurring role as Officer Brandy Quinlan’s (Olivia Luccardi) mother, Ann-Marie. (She’ll appear in at least three episodes before the end of the season.) Quinlan has mentioned her mom, a recovering addict, in the past, and just in our clip alone, we get a sense of just how tense things are between the two women. When Quinlan checks that her mom’s still living in Boston, Ann-Marie realizes she never updated her daughter on her address. And after Officer Andre Bentley (Lavel Schley) walks in and the two meet, he leaves; Ann-Marie remarks, “he’s handsome.” But Quinlan turns...

On TV, no one wants a surprise visit from their parents.
East New York Season 1 Episode 15 won't buck tradition in this respect. According to spoilers, Quinlan's mother will show up while Quinlan is trying to figure out her relationship with Bentley.
It couldn't come at a worse time, either, with the 7-4 embroiled in a contentious case involving a battle over gentrification.
The series was going to have to confront gentrification sooner or later. It's an issue that all poor, mostly-minority neighborhoods have to deal with.
Gentrification happens when rich, often white, developers purchase significant property in a poor neighborhood. These developers make improvements that drive up property values and make the area more attractive to wealthier people -- who move in and squeeze out the people living there.

Talk about awkward!
Quinlan and Bentley called Regina to the projects on East New York Season 1 Episode 14 for what turned out to be an act of stupidity, only to catch a murder case.
One of the witnesses disliked that Quinlan and Bentley were cops or that Tiffany could face any consequences for stabbing her cousin in the neck. Is this going to undo the progress she's made with her neighbors?
Although Lorenzo made it sound like nobody liked Cody or thought Tiffany should be punished for killing him, he may have been talking only for himself.
Some other neighbors know Quinlan is a cop -- where has he been? And they've grudgingly begun to accept her or even see her as a friend.

It's another week of big premieres on the small screen.
Perry Mason is back with another case to crack after a long hiatus, School Spirits is in session, and Scandal's Kerry Washington returns in UnPrisoned.
Check out what we recommend you watch this week.
Saturday, March 4
8/7c Black Girl Missing (Lifetime)
Where do you turn when the police and media are no help?
Lifetime opts to explore the other side of Missing White Woman Syndrome by showcasing the disparity in how a missing young girl of color slips through the cracks, prompting her mother to turn to internet sleuths, amateur detectives, and the community to find her daughter when the media and law enforcement are too busy directing all of their attention to a "pretty blond girl" of the same age.
Garcelle Beauvais shines in this ripped-from-the-headlines film inspired by far too many stories.

What's going on at Raskin Gardens?
When East New York began, it seemed like this housing project was a high-crime area full of residents who didn't trust cops -- especially a white cop like Quinlan, who was policing her neighbors instead of getting to know them.
That storyline disappeared for a while, but East New York Season 1 Episode 14 spoilers say that Killian and Morales will investigate a murder there -- and it could get Quinlan in trouble with her neighbors again.
The official synopsis for the hour says that Killian and Morales turn to Quinlan for insight while solving a murder at the Raskin Gardens housing project.
Their thinking makes sense. Quinlan lives at the housing project. So when the cops hit a dead end during the investigation, they wonder if she's seen or heard anything or knows anything about her neighbors that could help explain who killed the victim.

Will Regina's past be a help or a hindrance as the 7-4 investigates a potential arson?
According to spoilers for East New York Season 1 Episode 13, she'll rely on a fire marshal and a medical examiner with ties to the past. But will these people be able to help?
Regina might also have more to worry about after she enacts a new policy without consulting Suarez, who has been in talks with Sharpe about assisting with Sharpe's mayoral bid.
We don't know a lot about Regina's pre-leadership life. She had a friendship with Suarez and a father who abruptly quit the NYPD for reasons he doesn't discuss, but that's about it.
Regina likely faced racism as she moved up through the ranks. She had to learn who her allies were to be as successful as she is.

Are you ready to Party Down? Starz sure hopes so, as after over a decade, the series makes a (hopefully triumphant) return.

It's been a long time. East New York last aired in early January, taking another break soon after returning from its midseason hiatus.
But now, the series is finally back, and we couldn't be happier!
East New York Season 1 Episode 12 spoilers promise more of Jimmy Smits, a big story for Bentley, and Killian's past coming back to haunt him.
Now that marijuana is legal in New York, the 7-4 will face a new, related problem: someone robbing dispensaries.
That's not good news for pro-legalization advocates, who won't want marijuana associated with violent crime. It's also problematic for Killian, who will have a personal connection to the case.
View Slideshow: CBS Cheat Sheet: CSI: Vegas & NCIS: Los Angeles in Danger
What could that connection be? Spoilers say that it threatens to derail Killian's personal life. He hasn't been getting along well with Corrine since she hired that ex-con as head...

Regina took over the 7-4 to ensure that the police took neighborhood residents' complaints as seriously as those of white, wealthier people.
She's proven repeatedly that she means it, gradually gaining people's trust as she closes cases that no one else paid attention to.
Sometimes that's a tall order. East New York Season 1 Episode 11 spoilers suggest that a new case might be the most formidable challenge to Regina's mission yet.
The night's biggest story will be that a young dancer's body turns up on the tracks. According to the spoiler video, Regina reassures the victim's grief-stricken mother that she wants to find out who killed the girl as much as the mother does.
But will Regina be able to keep that promise? This appears to be a tough case where leads are scarce if they exist. And if the police can't solve this murder, the mother will be twice as...

Good news first: Bentley's going to be okay.
While it was unlikely that CBS' newest police procedural would kill off a main character halfway through its freshman season, you never know.
East New York Season 1 Episode 10 dealt with the aftermath of Bentley's shooting. It was an emotional, gripping hour of television that showed how difficult it is to be a cop in these circumstances.
All the cops that worked with Bentley were shocked and upset by the shooting, but they didn't have time to get in their feelings. They prioritized finding out who shot Bentley and bringing that person to justice.
Bentley's mother was the one who did most of the grieving and worrying. She sat vigil at the hospital, ran interference when the cops wanted to spend too much time questioning her son and demanded to know why his partner hadn't come to visit.

8/7c Reba McEntire’s The Hammer (Lifetime)
Everything’s better with Reba, and this is no exception when she stars as Kim Wheeler, one of the few traveling judges in America.
As you can guess, she’s a spitfire, and her district, ranging from Vegas to Reno, requires that energy when she’s the judge for cases that cover everything under the sun and then some.
Of course, she has to pull double the duty when her sister, a brothel house owner, becomes the primary suspect in the suspicious death of Kim’s predecessor.

Please tell us Bentley makes it!
The rookie cop was shot during an ambush soon after the 7-4 took down a gang leader who had gotten away with violent crime for years. He may or may not have been the intended target, but as East New York Season 1 Episode 10 opens, he will be fighting for his life.
This promises to be an emotional hour. Hopefully, we'll have answers by the end of it.
Regina is as loyal to her cops as she is determined to make a difference in the community. She won't be able to sit vigil in the hospital for long because she'll need to get to work finding out who did this and making sure they are held accountable for it.
But first, she and Suarez may need to deal with Bentley's mother, Simone.

The early success of the CBS drama East New York has been no less than “an embarrassment of riches” for series lead Amanda Warren.
In the freshman drama, Warren stars as Regina Haywood, the newly promoted Deputy Inspector of the 74th Precinct — a working-class neighborhood on the edge of Brooklyn in the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification. Winter finales tend to go big, and East New York's is no exception!
On East New York Season 1 Episode 9, Regina takes on corruption in the NYPD when a potential whistleblower commits suicide.
She's not going to let this one go, but how will the brass retaliate for this investigation?

We like to think that justice means every criminal is convicted and every victim feels satisfied.
But is this utopian ideal even desirable?
East New York Season 5 Episode 7 suggested that it wasn't, using two cases that seemed unrelated on the surface to make its point.
It seemed like an open-and-shut case when Antonia was caught with blood on her shirt minutes after shooting a supermarket owner.
But it didn't even take until the first commercial break for Regina and Morales to realize there was a lot more to the story.

Sunday can't get here fast enough.
If spoilers are any indication, East New York Season 1 Episode 7 will be as strong, if not even stronger, than the one before it!
This latest installment will feature two cold cases, most likely dropped because the old Deputy Inspector didn't give a damn about people living in East New York's poorest neighborhoods.
When Morales and Killian catch a shooting at a supermarket opening, something seems familiar about it to Morales.
According to spoilers, she suspects this act of violence is related to an old case of hers that the brass pressured her to drop.

Reopening it could get her into more trouble; if police administrators or the mayor's office pressured her to drop that case, they wouldn't want it coming out that they screwed up.
A clip in the spoiler video has Morales asking Suarez if she's in trouble,...

Jimmy Smits fans, this is your week.
Smits is a big name who has so far had only a small role, popping up to encourage Regina or to suggest she be careful of alienating Deputy Mayor Sharpe.
That's about to change. East New York Season 1 Episode 6 spoilers say that Chief Suarez will find himself in hot water, which likely means more screen time for Smits' character.
Suarez's troubles are slated to begin when an arrest goes viral.
It's highly unlikely that the aging chief, who is more or less an administrator now, will make the controversial arrest himself. However, he's in charge of the entire NYPD East New York branch, so if any officer under him does something questionable, he likely has to answer for it.

This week on CBS’ East New York, it’s Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood’s birthday — though there’s a frightful development that may have her worrying about lasting another trip around the sun.
In the sneak peek above from this Sunday’s episode — which airs at a special time, 8/7c — Regina (played by Amanda Warren) is pulled away from some birthday revelry to be asked some circuitous questions by Chief John Suarez (Jimmy Smits) and US Marshal David Westlake (guest star Lee Tergesen). Puzzled, Regina urges the gents to make clear their need to interrupt her after-hours life, at which...

Regina can't catch a break!
She's celebrating a birthday on East New York Season 1 Episode 5, only to be interrupted by terrible news: a prisoner has escaped, and he's out to get her.
The US Marshalls Office -- and Regina's team -- would probably prefer she stay under the radar while they handle this, but that doesn't sound like Regina.
According to the spoiler video, everything goes from celebratory to dark in a matter of minutes.
The 7-4 is going to be teaming up with the US Marshalls on this, and we already know from East New York Season 1 Episode 4 that Regina isn't going to quietly let someone else take over the case.

Regina will probably be twice as determined once she learns that the escaped prisoner is after her head. She's not one to stand down and let others protect her...

CBS’ “East New York” is the latest police procedural among the broadcast networks, and so far it’s been attempting to paint a more nuanced picture of the relationship between the community and law enforcement in the city’s 74th precinct.
The series follows new Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (Amanda Warren) as she tries to implement drastic change that will hopefully improve the distrust that people have for police, including encouraging her cops to focus less on petty crime and starting a community policing initiative. It marks a sign of change for police procedurals, which commonly depict cops going unchecked as they chase criminals — many of whom perpetuate harmful stereotypes about marginalized communities.
“What captivated me from the [previous police procedurals] were the characters in it [and] their views on how they approach their jobs versus how it would traditionally conventionally done,” showrunner Mike Flynn told TheWrap in a recent interview. “I wanted to...

Arriving two years after anti-police brutality protests ushered in a surge of self-examination around Hollywood’s enduring love affair with cop shows, CBS’ East New York tries to have it both ways.
On the one hand, it’s a procedural in the familiar hero-officer mold, focusing on a righteous protagonist doing everything in her power to do right by the community she’s serving. On the other, it tries, gingerly, to grapple with thorny issues like the inequality of criminal justice in America and the deeply damaged relationship between civilians and law enforcement. But there’s only so far the series is able or willing to push up against the limits of its own genre, and East New York proves to be far more successful in replicating its comforts than in tackling its dark side.
