San Diego’s Comic-Con International is the biggest event in the world devoted to genre pop culture. While the big Hollywood movies get the most mainstream press, there’s also a large, lesser known and promoted Independent Film Festival devoted to genre short films tucked away within the overall convention.
The Cci-iff, as it’s acronymed, runs completely concurrently with the convention with programming running from morning to night that includes films devoted to comic book-inspired movies, horror movies, sci-fi flicks, comedies and documentaries. There are also several panels on filmmaking sandwiched in between the on-screen entertainment.
The fest also gives out awards. This year’s juror panel includes filmmakers Steven-Charles Jaffee and Kyle Newman, plus entertainment journalist Borys Kit.
Programming blocks are broken up by genre and the full film lineup below gives the exact starting time of each short film. There’s also one feature film screening this year,...

Fans of The Guild and Felicia Day and fans of individuals Felicia Day is a fan of will recognize Teal (technically like the duck, not like the color) Sherer from her role in the uber-popular original web series about what happens when gamers get off their computers and into the complicated world of real life. She plays Venom, who is part of the Axis of Anarchy (which is a rival guild led by Fawkes, who is played by Wil Wheaton) and a “total bitch on wheels.” Online video enthusiasts may also recognize Sherer from the pilot and/or trailer of My Gimpy Life, a comedic web series produced by Sherer’s Rolling Person Productions, directed by The Guild’s Sean Becker, and written by Gabe Uhr that’s inspired by her own sometimes awkward adventures of being a driven actor navigating through Hollywood in a wheelchair. But soon, consumers of...

From Sandeep Parikh to Felicia Day, The Guild has launched careers for a number of its actors, but it has also created work for the people behind the camera. Sean Becker, the series' Streamy Award-winning director since season two, is one such case. Becker is a rare but increasingly common case of a person who, for basically his entire career, has worked in new media. The Guild, whose fifth season officially premieres on the web on July 26, is probably his most high profile credit, but Becker has lots of plans and projects. "It’s been crazy lately," Becker said in an interview. "I'm keeping busy and couldn't be happier. And I'd rather have that then not be busy at all." Becker has been working on passion projects with a number of Guild actors, including Jeff Lewis (The Jeff Lewis 5-Minute Comedy Hour, currently raising funds for season two), J. Teddy Garces...

If you are sick of hearing about the hot geek girl phenomena--too bad. I'm going to talk about it again and you will have to deal with it. Personally, the hot geek girl "problem" annoys me. It annoys me solely because it's a problem that there are hot geeks. Who fucking cares again? Oh right, almost everyone. And That is a problem.
The thing is, very few people come out of the womb hot. When you start off exploring your inner geek self, slowly and with a mirror in the privacy of your bedroom, you are probably young and not yet at the stage where it is acceptable to shower every day. Get it? The majority of these hot geek girls were probably geeks before they were hot. I mean it. Hollywood does crazy things to people--like give them money so that they can buy nice clothes, have someone do...

Odds are if you’re surfing B3K, you have a little geek in you. Odds are if you have a little geek in you, you’ve heard of Milynn Sarley. Vork was bound to get his own show. Well, by that I mean the web needed more of the cerebral deadpan comedy of The Guild star Jeff Lewis. Thankfully, Lewis had made a few friends who know a thing or two about shooting web series after four seasons on one of the most popular scripted comedies online. Teaming up with Guild director Sean Becker, Lewis birthed a series of sharp five-minute sketches that would feature a number of his comedy pals like Felicia Day, Alex Albrecht, Tom Konkle, Vince Caso, Robin Thorsen and Jamie Kaler. The Jeff Lewis 5-minute Comedy Hour debuted back in October of last year with Guild-cast-heavy “Tag” kicking off the season. To date, it’s still the most popular in terms of views, netting just under 80,000 so far on YouTube. Throughout the season, 5-minute would push the comedy lines into mature corners, often slapping an Nsfw...

Guildies the world over can now breathe a sigh of relief. After months of debate over the cliffhanger-y end of season 4, Microsoft officially announced today that season 5 of The Guild is indeed going to be a reality and that the show will return to Xbox Live, MSN Video and the Zune Marketplace during Summer of 2011, sponsored by Microsoft and Sprint. “I’ve never been more excited for anything. Take that Christmas 1989,” exclaimed show director Sean Becker (several exclamation points have been removed in editing). “I’m really excited for the renewal of season 5. I think this decision could really turn Microsoft into a household name.” All joking aside, with season 5, The Guild continues to hold on to it’s rep as the “Gold Standard” of web series, often used by content creators as a guide and inspiration for how to successfully launch, extend, and build a community behind a property on the web.

Season 3 DVD

Starring Felicia Day, Jeff Lewis
Release date: May 25, 2010
Are you a gamer? Have you ever played an M.M.O.R.P.G.? Do you like comedy? If you said yes to any of these questions, then The Guild is a show for you. This is one of my favorite shows and every time the DVDs come out, I buy them right away. The Guild: Season 1 DVD was no exception as I was extremely excited for this season, as much if not more than I was the first two seasons. As with Kevin Smith movies, the special features make it worth the price alone.
Basically, The Guild follows a group of World of Warcraft players, although it isn't referred to as that specifically it is meant to be that game, who form a guild and through the guild discuss their issues. Most...

Fans didn’t have to wait long to feast their eyes on the latest music video from hit web series The Guild, which unveiled the to a ballroom full of over 1600 wide-eyed fans at Comic-Con on Saturday. In what has become an annual tradition for the web series after its multi-million view breakout “Do You Wanna Date My Avatar” video from last year’s Con penetrated well beyond the show’s loyal fans, this year’s video upped the ante in terms of production and dance moves. (That, and we are now officially convinced that Felicia Day could also make a sizable living as a singer.) Zaboo convinces Codex to resume game play by transporting them to a world of inspiring song and dance. Vibrant costumes and a large cast of extras give it an over-the-top look and feel. This time things got bigger. No longer holed up in a dreadfully undersized Room 5Ab, after two years of snaking multi-hour lines of devoted fans, Comic-Con knew it was time to upgrade this fan-powered web series to a ballroom—a big one. The 1600-plus that packed into the Indigo Ballroom at the San Diego Hilton were ready to once again be surprised by creator Felicia Day and the team behind the two and half year-old web series The Guild. The tricky part? Last year’s bar was set high—very high, with a flurry of surprise announcements including Wil Wheaton’s addition to the cast, a Guild comic book series and the now legendary music video “Do You Wanna Date My Avatar?” With two episodes of the new season already live online before this year’s Con, the smart money was on something big coming up in the next few episodes.

The third day of San Diego Comic Con International 2010 will be marked with a Seth McFarlane and Matt Groening fiesta in addition to a number of new series screenings. But beloved series like "Chuck" and "The Vampire Diaries" are also cramped on the usually most-crowded day.
"Chuck" which is known for its dedicated fans will be the first TV panel to occupy the Ballroom 20 that day. Last year, they set the bar high by featuring a performance by the Jeffster. Then starting from 11:00 A.M. Seth McFarland will take over the room to present panels for animations he created like "Family Guy". Matt Groening gets his turn at 12:45 P.M., kicking it off with returning series "Futurama".
New series which would be screened in smaller rooms are "The Event", "No Ordinary Family" and "Nikita". For those craving for some vampires, The CW will hold "The Vampire Diaries" panel at 4:15 P.

At first look, it might seem strange that a celebration is scheduled for Tax Day, which still in times of economic hardship would seem like a time to reflect on where one went wrong. After all, celebrations are rewards, aren't they? We're not paying anything (bar tabs aside). Tonight, though, we're paying our Respect Tax. To the web, to ourselves, to each other. I'm not going to get sappy - partially because as I write this a raging of a hangover is on the horizon (look for that as a metaphor later in this piece!). However, in her acceptance speech at the Celebrate the Web, post-Streamys gathering, Felicia Day said, "We want to be authentic to ourselves," as why we work on the web. On a windy, overcast Sunday afternoon the 2010 Streamy Awards took over the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Even though the FearNet webseries “Fear Clinic,” directed by Robert Hall and starring genre favorites Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris, and Lisa Wilcox, stood alone to represent our favorite genre, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a gaggle of horror-related goodies to indulge in while working the red carpet event before the show.

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
