MLB Network will look back at some of the signature baseball calls from Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Costas in a new The Sounds of Baseball episode debuting Thursday, February 8th at 8 p.m. Et.
Cohosted by MLB Network’s Tom Verducci and Matt Vasgersian, the program will reflect on Costas’ run covering the game, from iconic postseason moments to memorable regular season games.
Awarded the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcast excellence by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018, Costas has been on the national baseball stage for more than 40 years. For the 2024 season, Costas is once again set to be the play-by-play voice for several MLB Network Showcase telecasts, a role he started when MLB Network launched 15 years ago in 2009.

Bill Murray was such an integral part of the success of "Saturday Night Live" that many people will assert he was there for the entirety of the show's pioneering first five seasons. He was a member of the "National Lampoon Radio Hour" ensemble that included John Belushi, Gilda Radner, and Chevy Chase, and left an indelible mark on SNL as trend-chasing Nick the Lounge Singer and Todd DILAMuca, the noogie-administering boyfriend of Radner's Lisa Loopner.
Murray, however, was effectively red-shirted for the first season of SNL. Though he was clearly, abundantly talented enough to crack the first season's lineup, producer Lorne Michaels, who was overseeing NBC's late Saturday night experiment, had to kill a darling or two at the last second to appease the network's miserly budgeting. The 25-year-old Murray wound up being the odd oddball out.

Tim McCarver, the All-Star catcher whose cerebral approach behind the plate over four decades led to a Hall of Fame career as a baseball broadcaster, has died. He was 81.
McCarver died Thursday, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced. The cause of death was heart failure.
McCarver broke into the major leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1959 at age 17 and took his final swings for the 1980 World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies. Blessed with a good eye and a disciplined approach in the batter’s box, he compiled a .271 batting average over 21 seasons and pushed the Cardinals to titles in 1964 and ’67.
The Memphis native, who also played for the Montreal Expos and Boston Red Sox, developed a strong rapport with Hall of Fame pitchers Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton, earning two All-Star appearances and a spot in the Cardinals Hall of Fame.

We may be only two episodes into “The Masked Singer” season 7 but it is easily the best yet, full of fun and exciting performances. We’ve already seen the exit of one of the five celebrities competing as part of Team Good: McTerrier, who was revealed to be Food Network star Duff Goldman at the end of the premiere on March 9.
McTerrier lost the sing-off to another contestant on Team Good, the Firefly. She returns to compete on episode 2, “Masks at Dawn – Round 1,” which airs on March 16. Also back are Team Cuddly contestant Thingamabob and two from Team Bad (Cyclops and Ram).
We’ve been rewatching their first performances and have all your “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is Ram”?
See Everything to know about ‘The Masked Singer’ Season 7
We think that the Ram is Joe Buck, the sports broadcaster who handles the play-by-play for NFL and MLB games.

ESPN confirmed Wednesday that it has signed longtime Fox broadcasters Joe Buck and Troy Aikman to multi-year deals, securing their roles as the new voices of the network’s Monday Night Football. The deal takes effect with the upcoming season, which will mark the pair’s 21st season in the booth together — the first 20 years at Fox.
As part of the deals, the network said Buck and Aikman will both contribute content to ESPN+. Contract details were not provided, but the move shores up ESPN’s NFL team as it will boost it coverage over the next few years. It also leaves a hole at Fox Sports, which must find a new No. 1 team for its Sunday coverage as well as a new World Series announcer, a role Buck has held for the network over his 30-plus years at Fox.

Sportscaster and voice of the World Series Joe Buck begins a new gig at “Jeopardy!” this week as guest host.
Buck will host the timeless trivia quiz show starting Monday through Aug. 13. The play-by-play commentator said in a statement to “Jeopardy!” that he’s “done Super Bowls and World Series and U.S. Opens, but to get to stand on this stage and host this show is really a career highlight.”
Buck said he’s been a fan of the quiz show for years and is excited to get behind the podium. “To be on the inside of it, see how it works, see the intensity of the game, I will go home with a newfound appreciation for something I already appreciate,” Buck said.
Sadly for Buck, not everyone is thrilled at the idea of seeing him in the place of the late, great “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek. Some people...

In a different era, the sportscaster winding down after a long night of calling balls, strikes, first downs, field goals or what have you might be eager to get to the bar. Joe Buck yearns merely for a steaming bowl of chicken noodle or creamy tomato.
“If room service is still open, and a hot bowl of soup can be delivered to me after a long night of talking for hours – I think people would be surprised at how big a smile I have on my face when I hear the knock on the door,” he says in a recent interview.
Buck’s head is no doubt crammed with baseball stats and football maneuvers, but he has reason these days to keep a little space in his mind for the condition of his throat. His current Fox Sports schedule may have him talking to fans for 17 of 18 consecutive days.

The Cleveland Browns-Cincinnati Bengals Thursday night game had an added surprise. Fox broadcaster Joe Buck was informed at halftime while he was on the air that he has won the Pete Rozelle Award, which means he is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
The Hall’s President and CEO C. David Baker appeared in a pre-recorded video announcing the longtime broadcaster as an inductee. There he will join his father, the late Jack Buck, as the first father and son to win the Rozelle Award. Actor Paul Rudd, a longtime friend of Buck’s, narrated a tribute to him as part of the presentation.
The award was created in 1989 and named for the longtime NFL commissioner. It is bestowed annually “for longtime exceptional contributions to radio and television in professional football.”
Buck was momentarily flummoxed by the news. “I don’t even know what to say.

Who’s up for a road trip? I’m guessing most folks are, after being cooped up for much of this year. Well, since things aren’t quite back to normal, perhaps a cinematic one would fill the bill. Maybe a state to state jaunt would be in order, with a somewhat shady duo behind the wheel ala’ Smokey And The Bandit or Thelma And Louise, perhaps just indulging in an occasional “dine ‘n’ dash” or a “fill-up and flee”. Oh, and aside from the authorities, some roughnecks are on your trail. That’s the elements of the new comic crime caper Easy Does It. But with these dimwits churning up dust, nothing is ever easy (especially for the audience).
Down in Mississippi, in the down and dirty alleys and side streets, we meet the story’s two “heroes” as they try to run the old “fight scam”. Jack (Ben Matheny...

Will Ferrell has been taking his "Anchorman" character Ron Burgundy everywhere lately -- he gave hair product advice on "Conan," he stopped by a North Dakota news broadcast. His latest target? "The Dan Patrick Show."
Check out these clips. Our favorites are the one where he does legendary sports calls, like Jack Buck calling Kirk Gibson's famous home run or Doug Davis calling Doug Flutie's Boston College hail mary -- with his patented Burgundy-ness, and the one at the very bottom where he fields a call from Champ Kind (David Koechner).
They talk about Kind's rejected sports catchphrases -- "Garbanzo beans!" and "Lemon pepper chicken!," which is a dish he loves but it just didn't catch on with the fans. Hee.
"Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" opens nationwide on Dec. 18.

The masks from Lionsgate’s You’Re Next are descending on cities around the country and have found their way to St. Louis.
There is no escaping the animal-masked, ax-wielding murderers in this devilishly smart and horrifying thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The Davison family planned on the perfect reunion, but didn’t expect a violent intrusion… could you survive if there was nowhere to hide?
As you can see in these shots of the Animals, no one – including Al MacInnis, Jack Buck, Ozzie Smith and Chuck Berry – is safe in our fair city.
But beware – they are on the move and might be in your neighborhood already.
Lionsgate’s You’Re Next takes one of the most terrifying film genres, the home-invasion movie, and turns it on its head—adding dimension, drama, and bone-chilling realism to one of life’s most universal fears.

The unwashed masses
Before the show started, Cory the Host introduced each Idol individually. Based on applause only, Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox have this thing sewn up and Big Mike is going home. There were a gaggle of women that presented quite the contradiction of looks -- they looked to be mid-40s but were dressed like 16-year-olds. They were also holding signs that said "Bucket List: 1) Go to 'American Idol' and 2) Meet Simon Cowell."
