Starting today, fans can check out the first two films of the Welcome to the Blumhouse collection which have officially arrived on Amazon Prime Video: Black Box and The Lie. In the latter, we’re introduced to an angsty teen named Kayla (Joey King), who admits to accidentally killing one of her friends, and her divorced parents (Peter Sarsgaard and Mireille Enos) must provide a united front as they try to figure out just how exactly they’re going to handle this unthinkable predicament.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Veena Sud, who directed The Lie and wrote the screenplay, and she discussed how this remake initially came together. Sud also chatted about the timeliness of The Lie, the family dynamics at the heart of this story, and more.

It’s remarkable what packaging can do for a film. In 2018, filmmaker Veena Sud’s second feature film bowed at the Toronto International Film Festival in the starry Galas section — other Galas that year included “First Man,” “A Star Is Born,” and “Widows” — where its heavy subject matter and high-profile placement seemed to earmark the drama as a contender to watch. First filmed under the title “Between the Earth and Sky” and based on a chilling German drama called “We Monsters,” the film promised to explore the psychological fallout of a horrible crime and the corrosive power it inflicts on a crumbling family. Sud had also locked in an exciting cast, including Joey King (pre-Emmy nomination), Peter Sarsgaard, and Mireille Enos, all the better to beef up its seeming gravitas. In short: it sounded good.

Germany’s film industry has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, but the sector remains teeming with opportunities for domestic and international productions and looks set to spring back into action in the coming months.
Boasting 10 federal and regional film funders with more than €330 million ($359 million) for film and TV production and a number of major studio and VFX facilities, the country has become a favorite location for international producers.
Warner Bros.’ “The Matrix 4” and Sony Pictures’ “Uncharted” were all set to shoot at Studio Babelsberg near Berlin before work stopped amid the Covid-19 outbreak in March. While the studio initially let go hundreds of film crew members following the shutdown, it has since reinstated them after securing financial assistance from the federal labor agency, staving off a potential legal dispute.
Other recent international projects that lensed in Germany include Abel Ferrara’s Berlinale screener “Siberia,” starring Willem Dafoe,...

To follow up her acclaimed Netflix limited series Seven Seconds, which brought Regina King her fourth Emmy nomination, Veena Sud decided to wade into darkness once more with Toronto-premiering drama The Lie, placing a magnifying glass on a parent’s worst fears.
Starring Mireille Enos, Peter Sarsgaard and The Kissing Booth’s Joey King—playing strongly against type as a teenage murderer—Sud’s remake of 2015 German film We Monsters follows estranged parents wrestling with the consequences of their daughter’s terrible mistake. Under immense pressure, they decide to make her crime disappear.
As a parent herself, watching Sebastian Ko’s original film was a deeply affecting experience for Sud. “I’m drawn to the extremes of human nature,” the director told Deadline in Toronto. “I’ve always been fascinated by the terrible things we do, who we are when we think no one’s looking, and also through going...

★★☆☆☆ Deceit and callousness abound in Sebastian Ko's psychological drama We Monsters (2015). It begins with an effective, open question which Marcus Seibert's screenplay then continues to re-pitch and re-frame throughout its runtime; if your child murdered someone, what would you do? It's an intriguing premise which is regrettably let down by fairly pedestrian treatment. Seibert never really manages to fully engage with the incidental - and more interesting - questions that he raises and as the narrative proceeds down its predictably dark path, it never quite settles on its tone meaning that neither its drama, nor its black-comedy, land the required punches.
There's a similar dichotomy to be found in Andreas Köhler's cinematography, which maintains a cool distance but is still littered with handheld tremors that seem to be reaching for an intimacy that the screenplay never affords. If one was being particularly generous, it could perhaps be...

While the Toronto International Film Festival looks around the world and in all genres to find features for its annual incarnation, one area that receives focus is films aimed at children. With the understanding both that quality cinema is not dependent on its target audience, and that cinephiles can begin at any age, the festival’s Kids Programme highlights such features.
The Discovery Programme, on the other hand, brings together films from first and second time directors, with an eye on emerging talent. The festival has now announced the lineups for both Programmes in the 2015 incarnation of the event, along with further additions to the Cinematheque and Vanguard lineup. The Discovery lineup joins previously announced Canadian features. The films, with their official synopses, can be seen below.
