Not even R2D2 or Et can usurp the stump-legged pirate Long John Silver or diminish the excitement of the battle for the hidden treasure
Treasure Island, one of the greatest adventure stories of all times, is 100 years old this month. You might think that we who have left sailing ships and buried treasure far behind and entered the space age would consign such an old chestnut to the dustbins of history.
But youngsters locked into Star Wars and Action Man also read Treasure Island. Why else are there 38 different editions in print in the Us alone and 43 in Great Britain? Why else, in 1977, was the book translated into 29 foreign editions?
The answer is that such a story never really ages or dies, because we are, like it or not, slaves to adventure. Some of us go out and seek it actively, scaling mountains, plumbing the oceans, taking those first giant steps on the moon.

Two video games are heading to the big screen, as CBS Films will bring Deus Ex: Human Revolution, while Warner Bros. is looking to sign Tom Hardy to star in their version of Splinter Cell, which was created with the help of Tom Clancy and has spawned several successful tie-in novels.
ABC has decided not to order the back nine for either 666 Park Avenue or Last Resort. However, both shows will remain on the air through the 13 episodes that the network ordered. So, both shows will remain in production, perhaps giving the creators a chance to finish off their tales. Both should eventually land on...

Last we spoke of Jessica Parker Kennedy we were wondering about her re-casting on Undercovers. We totally missed her appearance on the CW's The Secret Circle which aired its last episode in May. No worries for Kennedy though, she has been cast as Max, a french prostitute in the upcoming Starz series executive produced by Michael Bay entitled Black Sails. One of many pirate themed series on the horizon Black Sails is a pre-quel to Robert Louis Stevensons classic tale Treasure Island. The series is set 20 years prior to the novel and follows Captain Flint and his men as they fight to avoid authorities on the notorious New Providence Island, a haven for criminals,...

Sony Pictures is looking to expand their action title line by acquiring two action-genre pics. According to Variety, Sony purchased the action piece White House Down, having outbid against rival movie studio Paramount Pictures. The Amazing Spider-Man scribe James Vanderbilt penned the White House Down script, which has been described as Die Hard meets Air Force One.
Vanderbilt has also worked on the script for the upcoming Total Recall and did a couple of rewrites for the Robocop reboot script. He has also been offered to write the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. According to the trade, Vanderbilt will also produce the movie.
The Royal Honours Society was the second project that Sony picked up. According to THR, the movie will be based on stories of such authors as H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and Robert Louis-Stevenson in an action-adventure tale. Joe Roth and Palak Patel are in talks to produce the movie.

It has been the basis for at least five novels, most famously Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped. But the newly revealed story of James Annesley is more incredible than any of the tales it inspired
As yarns go, it pretty much has it all. There's a street waif who's actually an aristocrat, heir to half a dozen titles and estates in England, Ireland and Wales. A dastardly uncle who'll stop at nothing to usurp him. A kidnapping most foul, and a decade of toil as an indentured servant in 18th-century America. Then, against impossible odds, a dashing return, and a quest for justice through the courts that held all society spellbound.
The extraordinary story of James Annesley has inspired at least five novels, including Sir Walter Scott's Guy Mannering and, most famously, Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped, one of the best-loved adventure books of all time. Yet the true story behind...
