Typically, the MTV Video Music Awards follow an expected rhythm. Taylor Swift sweeps, there’s an R&b throwback and tried-and-true favorites dominate. Yet that wasn’t exactly the case for the 2024 VMAs, a ceremony that celebrated newcomers Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan and Benson Boone as loudly as old favorites like Eminem and Katy Perry.
In some cases, the new faces actually scored louder applause than the old.
This year, TheWrap was there to witness it all. From secret stages and specialty cocktails to surprising celebrity appearances, here’s what went on behind the scenes of MTV’s iconic awards show during its 40th year.

Sasha Colby may have stole some spotlight by dubbing Chappell Roan “your favorite drag queen’s favorite artist,” but the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winner was far from the only drag queen at the VMAs.

Tuesday night in Hollywood, RuPaul Charles got out from behind the judges’ desk of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” to serve as the DJ for a sickening roller skating Emmy FYC event that celebrated the franchise’s 10 nominations. Clad in a cowboy hat and a black button-up top, the Emmy-winning host and producer danced along with many of the show’s Season 16 queens, including Sapphira Cristál, Q, Dawn, Mhi’ya Iman LePaige, Xunami Muse, Megami, Mirage, Geneva Carr, Amanda Tori Meeting and Hershii LiqCour-Jeté.

RuPaul’s DragCon LA 2024 has officially begun! Earlier today, the cowboy hat-wearing RuPaul Charles opened the festivities at the Los Angeles Convention Center with the ceremonial cutting of the pink ribbon. “Fabulous! Have a good time. I love you,” the Queen of Drag told his adoring crowd while still holding the enormous pink scissors. RuPaul’s co-producer and co-judge Michelle Visage stood beside him, and they were flanked by dozens of drag queens from the American version of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” plus many other worldwide installments. Watch the ribbon cutting video below:

Once again, the convention’s festivities are presented by World of Wonder Productions and its co-founders, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. This year’s theme is the “hottest ever” … and we’re assuming that refers to the sizzling talent that’ll be on-hand rather than the California weather.

“I mean, there’s just nothing that can prepare you for the experience of Drag Race, because it is an experience of its own,” Season 16 queen Q said during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event.
After 16 seasons, MTV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race still manages to keep contestants and viewers on their toes — even when they’ve been vying for a spot for years, like Season 16 queen Sapphira Cristál.
“I auditioned for RuPaul’s Drag Race 11 times, and so I had a lot of time to prepare,” she said, explaining that each rejection only made her want it more. She used every year that passed as an opportunity to improve her craft in some way — whether it be her looks, her dance moves, her sewing even her mental health.

Known in some circles as the “fan favorite” award, the title of Miss Congeniality on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is a prize handed out to the queen most representative of kindness and for having strong sisterly bonds with the other girls. Up until Season 10, the award was voted on by the audience, but has since been selected by the cast members themselves, and is buttressed by a cash prize that has ranged from $1,500 to $10,000. Due to a historic tie in Season 16 between Sapphira Cristal and Xunami Muse, there have now been 17 total contestants awarded the title, many of whom have returned to compete at least one more time on various “All Stars” cycles. Banana fever reigns supreme after “RuPaul’s Drag Race” crowned America’s next drag superstar.
Season 16 winner Nymphia Wind snatched the crown from fellow finalists Plane Jane and Sapphira Cristál. With her win, Nymphia makes “Drag Race” history as the first-ever Taiwanese queen and the third Api winner, following in the footsteps of Season 3’s winner Raja and Season 15 queen Sasha Colby.

Long live the new queen! Season 16 of RuPaul’s Drag Race reached its dramatic conclusion on Friday, culminating with a lip sync smackdown for the crown.
This time around, it really was any queen’s game. A recent TVLine poll was split almost completely evenly between the final trio — Nymphia Wind, Plane Jane and Sapphira Cristál — with Sapphira edging out her tied competitors by only a single percent. Even the queens’ track records are remarkably similar; Plane and Sapphira each have four wins under their belts, while Nymphia has three.

Note: The following story contains spoilers from the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 16 finale.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” just crowned America’s latest drag superstar.
The sickening Season 16 finale followed as all of this year’s competing queens returned to watch Nymphia Wind, Plane Jane and Sapphira Cristál compete for the coveted title — with Wind coming out as the winner following a dazzling lip-synch for the crown to Kylie Minogue’s hit single “Padam.” This win marks the second time an Asian drag queen has won the competition series.
Wind walked away with a one-year supply of Anastasia Beverly Hills Cosmetics and cash prize of $200,000. The runner-up did not leave the floor empty-handed, walking away with a $25,000 cash tip. Jane, a polarizing competitor who was both loved and labeled a villain this season, landed in third place and left with another $25,000 prize.

Each week on “The Pit Stop,” Trixie Mattel recaps the latest episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 alongside a guest host. Following Friday’s eighth episode, reigning champion and Mother of season 15 Sasha Colby makes her recap debut to break down this season’s “Snatch Game” performances. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Sasha and Trixie have fun addressing the “unsolicited shade” of this season and how even when Plane Jane calls anyone “sister” feels like subtle shade as well. Sasha gives Jane some defense by admitting that as drag queens they all “just have a crippling desire for people to love us” and Jane is no different. When it came to the reading challenge of her season, Sasha was impressed by Loosey Laduca and Malaysia Babydoll Foxx; this season the standouts for her were Jane and Xunami Muse.

Each week on “Whatcha Packin’,” Michelle Visage interviews the recently eliminated queen and shows us some of the runway looks they didn’t get the chance to use on the show. Following her episode 8 elimination, Xunami Muse invites the audience into her life as an immigrant child from Panama, her relationship to an All Star alum, and how she’s “always been drawn to pretty things.” Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In her interview with Michelle, Xunami tells the story of how she met Kandy Muse at Pieces Bar in the West Village of New York City when Kandy pointed to her and declared, “You remind me of me.” From there they started hanging out and Kandy eventually offered her last name to Xunami so they became sisters. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 23 with episode 8 on MTV. Airing concurrently with the main show is its tea-spilling, backstage-focused sister series “Untucked,” now in its 15th season. For this week’s challenge, the nine remaining queens got to participate in the iconic “Snatch Game” with their best celebrity impersonations. The three safe queens this week were Dawn as Meghan McCain, Q as Amelia Earhart, and Plasma as Patti LuPone so they were the first to return to the Werk Room while the tops and bottoms received critiques from the judges.
Despite dreaming about winning “Snatch Game” for a long time, Plasma was “fine” with being safe because she wasn’t as confident with her performance as she thought she’d be. Dawn was equally fine with the decision, understanding that she didn’t stand out in the group. They both gave a “cheers” to Q for her first...

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 23 with the eighth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode seven, Plasma enjoyed her shining moment as the star and challenge winner in “The Sound of Rusic” while Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige and Megami didn’t strike a chord with the judges in their supporting roles. Despite a flipless Lip Sync for Your Life, Mhi’ya came out on top once again and sent Megami back to New York.
This week, the remaining 9 queens head to the celebrity dais with the classic impersonation challenge, “Snatch Game.” Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 8 was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Carson Kressley, and actress Kyra Sedgwick as the extra special guest.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 16 with the seventh episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode six, Geneva Karr‘s branded doll edition was among the judges’ least favorite and she found herself in the bottom for the third time. This time she faced off against Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige who came fully loaded with an arsenal of lip synching tricks and sent Geneva packing. Meanwhile, Q broke the curse of safety and finally earned her first maxi challenge win.
This week, the remaining 10 queens take the stage with song and dance in the dynamic Rusical challenge. Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 7 titled “The Sound of Rusic” was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Ross Mathews, and musical theater director and choreographer Adam Shankman as the extra special guest.

For this week’s challenge, the 11 remaining queens were asked to bring their sewing, branding and storytelling skills to the table all at once by creating fresh looks for a doll version of themselves. Returning first to the Werk Room as this week’s safe queens was freshly immunized Sapphira Cristál as well as Morphine Love Dion, Xunami Muse, Megami and Nymphia Wind.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 9 with the sixth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode five, Amanda Tori Meating wowed her peers and the judges with her dancing skills in the “Girl Groups” challenge, but a miss on concept on the runway landed her in the bottom two anyway. In a Lip Sync for Your Life to new-to-the-bottom Q, Amanda lost out and became the third queen to leave the competition.
This week, the remaining 11 queens return to the sewing machine for what Ru refers to as a “design, branding and storytelling” challenge to create a customized doll version of themselves. Each week on “The Pit Stop,” Trixie Mattel recaps the latest episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 alongside a guest host. Following Friday’s fifth episode, season 14 queen Maddy Morphosis made her debut on the show and proved why she would be a great future host. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, both Trixie and Maddy gave Q grace for her emotional reaction to being safe yet again because they see her as someone so very close to a win that they can understand the sting of not getting it. When it comes to Plane Jane‘s villain edit, Trixie can appreciate that Jane shouldn’t “punch down” in her comments on Amanda Tori Meating‘s drag, but at the end of the day it’s making good cat fights that we haven’t seen on the show in a while.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 2 with the fifth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode four, Plasma served up a perfect Barbra Streisand and sang her way to a challenge win in “Rdr Live!,” while Geneva Karr found herself in the bottom for a second straight week. Though not quite a “lip sync assassin” yet, Geneva was able to best Mirage in the Lip Sync for Your Life. Mirage, who had admittedly not known the lyrics to the song, left in tears with her sisters stirring in the emotions of her premature exit.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on January 26 with episode 4 on MTV. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on January 26 with the fourth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Following two non-elimination premiere episodes Part 1 and Part 2, the girls walked in the “The Mother of All Balls” in episode 3 where Hershii LiqCour-Jeté served the three looks that wowed her peers and the judges the least. Hershii lost the Lip Sync for Your Life to a surprised-to-be-ranked-at-the-bottom Geneva Karr. The winner of the week was Nymphia Wind who created a look from scratch that was declared as one of the best in series herstory.
This week, Geneva, Nymphia and the remaining 11 queens get in their comedy gigs for a live, one-take acting challenge. Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 4 titled “Rdr Live!” was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Ross Matthews, and the original “Slayer” Sarah Michelle Gellar as the extra special guest.

Airing concurrently with the main show is its tea-spilling, backstage-focused sister series “Untucked,” now in its 15th season. “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” Season 3 winner Trixie Mattel is set to return as the host of “Drag Race’s” Season 16 weekly recap show, “The Pit Stop.”
Mattel and a guest will review and recap each episode of “Drag Race” Season 16, which returns to MTV on Jan. 5. “The Pit Stop” will air on the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” YouTube channel every Saturday.
“Making snap judgments is my passion but I also love enduring characters that develop and grow (while dressed as women),” Mattel said in a statement to Variety. “I also love drama.”
As previously announced, “Drag Race” will return to its 90-minute format this season.
