Pixar is looking at its most significant hit in years after Inside Out 2 posted $13M at the box office in Thursday preview screenings. Viewings for the legendary animation studio’s latest animated marvel began at 3 p.m. on Thursday, with fans flocking to social media to praise the movie. Inside Out 2 shows the best 2024 preview numbers, beating Dune: Part Two’s $12M debut by $1 million. The emotionally charged sequel has a 93% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the chance to achieve a $100M opening weekend. If the film holds, it could decimate the predicted $135M opening analysis.
Inside Out 2 is already a hit with audiences after the world-famous animation studio’s string of box office disappointments. To give you some perspective, 2015’s Inside Out opened with $3.7M in previews and a $90.4M weekend gross. If the numbers hold for Inside Out 2, the sequel could quickly...

Move out of the way, Sadness: “Inside Out 2” just scored the biggest box office previews of 2024.
Disney and Pixar’s latest animated outing grossed $13 million in Thursday previews domestically, plus $22.3 million internationally. The family-friendly sequel is projected to launch between $80 million and $90 million this weekend.
A debut on the higher end would give “Inside Out 2” the biggest opening of the year. Warner Bros. currently holds the top two spots of 2024 with “Dune: Part Two” at $82.5 million and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” at $80 million.
For reference, “Inside Out 2’s” $13 million in domestic box office previews outpaced last year’s “The Little Mermaid” ($10.3 million), “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($10.8 million) and “Toy Story 4” ($12 million). It falls a bit short of recent animated superhero sequels like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($17.4 million) and “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million).

Inside Out 2 is on fire at the Friday box office after starting off with a joyful $13 million in Thursday evening previews, well ahead of expectations and putting the movie on course to become the first title of 2024 to clear $100 million in its debut.
In fact, traffic is so strong that the Pixar and Disney title is now expected to open to at least $130 million in North America, one of the top five openings of all time for an animated film, not adjusted for inflation. By Friday night, rival studios were throwing out estimates of $140 million or more, but Disney and Pixar are taking a more circumspect approach until they see a final number of the day (Friday’s haul should be at least $55 million).
Fellow Pixar release Incredibles 2 is the crown-holder for top animated opening ($182.7 million), followed by Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie...

Spoilers for "Inside Out 2" follow.
Something remarkable happens near the end of "Inside Out 2": a character has an anxiety attack. Is this a first for an animated Disney film? It just might be. This isn't the first animated film to depict a panic attack — the surprisingly excellent 2022 film "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" did it, and did it well. But for the House of Mouse, this feels like a monumental moment. Not only does "Inside Out 2" showcase an anxiety attack, but it does so in a realistic, harrowing way. As someone who suffers from anxiety and depression, seeing such a moment depicted in a major movie aimed at kids felt almost seismic, as if I didn't know such an action was permitted. I imagine that seeing this scene will upset some younger viewers, but it might also open their eyes to thoughts and feelings they're grappling to understand.

Nine years after the first film, Pixar and Disney finally bring us the sequel to the beloved film Inside Out. The film, which personifies our emotions as little creatures in our minds that puppet us through life, is, in concept, a little over the top, but in presentation, it is absolutely sincere, which makes it an emotional rollercoaster. The sequel nicely expands on this theme and gives us the protagonist, Riley, as a teenager, a difficult time in every human’s life when you start to feel like you’re not good enough and like the whole world is going to swallow you whole. But how does this change affect us? How does it shape us into better human beings? That’s the question Inside Out 2 tries to answer. I certainly enjoyed this one and was in tears as soon as the theme song played with the Disney intro,...

At the end of Pixar's phenomenal "Inside Out," the core emotions of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear are given a new console in Headquarters to better equip the workers for the changes heading toward their girl, Riley Andersen. They've successfully helped her in her transition from Minnesota to the San Francisco Bay Area, prevented her from trying to run away from home, and helped restore Riley to the wonderful girl she's always been. She's on a new hockey team, the Fog Horns, and is embracing a new chapter in her life. But along with the console upgrades like the complete curse world library, there's a little section that reads "Puberty," which Joy (Amy Poehler) brushes off as "probably not important." Oh, Joy. You fool. You silly, optimistic fool.

Chicago –Pixar Studios rediscovers some of its movie magic with the thoughtful and sophisticated “Inside Out 2.” It’s the sequel that doesn’t feel like a retread of what came before but instead is a natural progression of the story we’re already invested in … as early adolescence and puberty arrive to crash the kid party.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
We pick up the story with Riley, now a 13-year-old girl, still obsessed with hockey and getting a surprise invite to a big weekend hockey camp. The first emotional hiccup to handle for Joy (voice of Amy Poehler) and her “mission control” is when Riley’s two best friends reveal they’re going to a different high school next year.
But Joy’s positivity seems to have things all wrapped up, with a system of banishing bad memories to the back of the mind so Riley’s sense of positive self can blossom.

Well, now we’re in “prime” Summer movie season mode as one of the big “crowd-pleasing” studios drops its 28th feature film into the multiplexes this weekend. Oh, and it is truly animated with eye-popping visuals and splendid imaginative designs. And after the animal stars dominating the cartoon landscape this year with Kung Fu Panda and Garfield, we’re focusing on a human being, Well, mostly what’s going on in this teenager’s head, so we’re revisiting a set of creatures based on emotions and meeting a bunch of new “feelings”. Of course, I’m speaking of Pixar, who have decided to produce a sequel to a much-admired Oscar-winning 2015 “dramedy/fantasy”, after several interesting original flicks like Soul, Turning Red, and Elemental (so don’t think they’re just exploiting their “IP”). Yes, it’s been nine years, but animation can “tweak” time, so it’s only been...

Emotions are running high at Pixar and Disney as they open Inside Out 2 at the global box office this weekend, including a jolt of excitement over a last-minute bump in tracking.
On Thursday, Hollywood’s leading tracking service the National Research Group upped its domestic opening forecast for the summer’s first animated tentpole from $85 million to $90 million. Tracking has been notoriously off this year, and especially this summer, so the decision to go out with a higher number is significant. (For its part, Disney is sticking with $80 million to $85 million.)
At this pace, Inside Out 2 has a strong shot of scoring the top domestic opening of the year to date, supplanting Dune: Part II ($82.5 million).
Skies are also looking sunny overseas, where Inside Out 2 rolled out in its first eight international markets on Wednesday to the tune of $4.9 million.

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster cartoon character. At first, it was simply the lack of physical limitations that a kid can only dream of having, because physics and biology make it impossible to fall off a cliff and have your body turned into an accordion or get blown up by dynamite with only a busted nose and a soot-covered body to show for it.
As I grew up, I became fascinated with the art of cartoon voice work, transforming your speech into something completely different and having it represented by a kooky character in a cartoon world. Though it's not a dream I actively pursued, in the back of my head, I've always wished to lend my voice to some kind of animated project. Well, earlier this year, Pixar Animation came as close to making my dream come true as they could.

It’s been a difficult stretch for Pixar. In the near-decade since Inside Out became a creative and commercial hit, the animation powerhouse doubled down on a variety of so-so sequels before spiraling into a drought throughout the pandemic. It didn’t help that it used the quarantine period as an excuse to drop two autobiographically inspired and richly conceived tales––Luca and Turning Red––onto Disney+, losing some of its prestige in the process. After Lightyear, which was primed to fuel up the studio’s theatrical prospects again, sputtered on the tarmac two summers ago and last year’s Elemental struggled to make an opening splash, Pixar faced another crossroads.

In Inside Out 2, Pixar continues to explore the intricate world inside Riley’s mind. Following the emotional journey from the original film, this sequel deepens the narrative by introducing five new emotions, including Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, and Ennui, voiced by Adèle Exarchopoulos. New Emotions Join the Fray As Riley embarks on her teenage years, she is no longer guided solely by Joy (Amy Poehler) and the other original emotions. Instead, characters like Anxiety bring a new dynamic into play. According to Pixar, The story centers on how Riley and her original emotions cope with these new additions, navigate...

Pixar has a knack for making stories about the turbulence of adolescence universally relatable. Their latest offering, the splendid sequel to 2015’s Inside Out, appropriately titled Inside Out 2 doesn’t necessarily continue the narrative of the first film, more so than it continues the development of the film’s protagonist.
Following the events of the first film – wherein young Riley found herself and her family uprooted from their Midwest home and relocated to San Francisco – Inside Out 2 picks up with Riley rapidly approaching the next big challenge of her life – puberty.
As the film begins, Riley and her friends are preparing to head to a hockey camp in preparation for attending a new high school as well as possibly making the school’s hockey team. Initially, Riley and her friends, as well as the core emotions within her head – Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black...

In “Inside Out 2,” Riley, the displaced tween from “Inside Out,” is now 13 years old, which means that she’s on the verge of a whole new set of emotions. In the Headquarters of her brain, a siren flashes (it’s the one we saw in the earlier film marked Puberty), which means it’s time for renovation workers to bust into the place, tear down the walls, and install a new console that can accommodate Riley’s budding adolescent feelings. The original quintet of Anger (Lewis Black), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Tony Hale), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and the beloved Joy (Amy Poehler) are still around, but they’re now “suppressed emotions,” shoved to the back of her mind..

Pixar’s 2015 instant classic, Inside Out, was the best possible psychological starter kit for curious kids. The movie was groundbreaking in its inventive way of showing children the complex workings of their minds, framed as a hair-raising adventure, while also making the tour into the subconscious both hilarious and deeply affecting for adults. What are the odds that a sequel almost a decade later and by a mostly new creative team could recapture its canonical predecessor’s magic and humanity? But graduating from childhood into the emotional minefield of early adolescence might even have improved upon it.
Veteran Pixar storyboard artist Kelsey Mann hits a home run with his first feature, working from a screenplay by Meg LeFauve (the key holdover from Inside Out) and Dave Holstein that ingeniously personifies the tornado of conflicting feelings wreaking havoc inside the head of 13-year-old Riley (Kensington Tallman).

Change can often be as painful as it is inevitable. This is a fact of life and a fact that haunts Inside Out 2. The long anticipated sequel arrives nearly a decade after one of Pixar’s finest and most sophisticated films, making good on what previously was left as a looming menace and dark joke for the emotions of Riley—a sensitive girl who ended the 2015 film on the precipice of adolescence and all those fearsome feelings which come with it. “Riley’s 12, what could happen?” her emotions absently muse among themselves.
Yet the anxiety that so often accompanies change appears to be rattling around in the collective head (or boardrooms) of Pixar too. The studio which once looked invincible in the 2000s and 2010s has, in the nine years since Inside Out, seen its chief creative officer and co-founder resign in a cloud of #MeToo accusations and disgrace; a...

We’re back in Riley’s head as she faces puberty, but can Pixar repeat the success of the first film? Find out in our Inside Out 2 review.
Inside Out might be the best Pixar film ever made. Heck, it might even be one of the best films ever made. Pete Docter’s 2015 animation managed to somehow make those pesky feelings and voices inside our heads accessible and easy to understand for both children and adults. Its central message – you need all your emotions, none of them are bad – felt almost groundbreaking because no one had said it out loud before. At least, not with this much charm and honesty.
When Inside Out 2 was announced, you could almost hear the collective groan let out by fans. We didn’t need – or want – another Inside Out, because frankly, how could it ever match the magic of the first one?...

Of all the Pixar films to follow up, Inside Out seems the most risky. While the ending of the first gave a clear signal of where the general plot could go, with a pre-teen Riley (now voiced by Kensington Tallman) on the edge of puberty, aka emotional Armageddon, you had to wonder what would be the point? The original so brilliantly, with the lightest of touches, dug into the foundations of the human brain that it seemed to leave any sequel with little to do but retread. Once you’ve flicked so far into Psychology 101 that you’re making gags about abstract thought, where else do you go?
Inside Out 2’s answer is not to try to outsmart its predecessor but to continue and mature its emotional journey. That’s immediately evident in its choice to begin on the already laid narrative path, rather than reroute for the sake of originality.

It’s been nearly a decade since the original film came out, so the animation required some updates before Inside Out 2 would be ready to go. For this, Pixar had a team of both new and returning craftspeople working tirelessly to rework the world and introduce a new set of emotions to tell a new story for the sequel.
Inside Out 2 returns to follow Riley Anderson (Kensington Tallman) and her emotional network during her teenage years. As she hits puberty, a crew of new emotions shows up, upsetting the balance Joy (Amy Poehler) has created in Riley’s mind. As the craftspeople were in charge of updating the world of Inside Out, they also had to deal with the introduction of new emotions, including Anxiety (Maya Hawke). Inside Out 2 releases in theaters on June 14, 2024.

After the overperformance of Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, summer’s big wheels keep on turnin’ as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is looking at what could be the biggest stateside opening of the year to date with $85M, and another $50M abroad for a $135M global launch.
Legendary/Warner Bros’ Dune: Part Two owns the biggest domestic opening of 2024 so far with $82.5M, while both studios’ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire counts the year’s largest global launch for a Hollywood movie at $194M.
Inside Out 2 also will rep the biggest post-Covid opening for a Disney animated movie, with many of its films lacking the wattage of pre-pandemic times. Disney/Pixar’s Lightyear became its best post-Covid domestic opening at $50M — and that was considered to be a total misfire for the Toy Story franchise.

“Inside Out 2” should evoke an emotion that Pixar hasn’t felt about the box office in years: Joy.
The follow-up film to 2015’s cerebral hit “Inside Out” is estimated to score a stellar $80 million to $90 million in its box office debut. If projections hold, it’ll overtake “Dune: Part Two” ($82.5 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million) as the biggest opening of the year.
As this weekend’s only new nationwide release, it’ll have no trouble taking the box office crown from the prior champion, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.” The fourth installment in Sony’s buddy-cop comedy, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, launched over the weekend with $56.5 million and should add roughly $28 million in its sophomore outing.

Nine years after exploring the emotions of 11-year-old Riley, Inside Out 2 made its debut in Los Angeles on Monday, rolling out a whole new range of feelings as Riley becomes a teenager.
Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust from the original film are still in the mix, but now are joined by Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment. While some changes have been made to the voice cast — Liza Lapira replaces Mindy Kaling as Disgust and Tony Hale replaces Bill Hader as Fear — Amy Poehler returns as Joy, still the star emotion for a 13-year-old Riley.
Of coming back to the Inside Out world almost a decade later, Poehler told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet that, “It’s actually given me an incredible gift, to be in a film like this means a lot. It’s very hard to be in something that is really good, that means...

He might voice a cop in the latest Disney-Pixar movie, but Flea is still a rebel at heart.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers rocker appeared to forget where he was for a moment as he posed with both middle fingers in the air on the purple carpet of Monday’s Inside Out 2 world premiere in Los Angeles.
It all appeared to be in good fun as he also busted out some dance moves for the cameras. Deadline has reached out to Flea’s reps for comment.
Despite the unexpected rockstar vibes, the event at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre drew plenty of families, including Ashlee Simpson, husband Evan Ross, and their brood.
Flea reprises his voice role as Mind Cop Worker Jake from the original 2015 film, which takes place inside a young girl’s mind, following the personifications of her changing emotions.

Pixar has been one of the premiere names in animation ever since the first "Toy Story" released in 1995, changing the game forever. Disney's beloved animation company was also one of the true Hollywood box office titans, with pretty much everything Pixar touched turning to gold, though "The Good Dinosaur" serves as a rare exception to the rule. Unfortunately, the pandemic changed all of that, and Pixar has had a rough time recovering, with "Lightyear" bombing badly after several of the studio's originals went straight to Disney+. "Inside Out 2" aims to change the narrative next weekend and bring the studio back to its dominant place at the top of the box office charts.
Director Kelsey Mann's sequel is currently eyeing an opening weekend in the $75 to $94 million range, per Box Office Theory. Even on the low end, that would be an exceptional start for the film. Nine years ago,...

With the unofficial beginning of summer — Memorial Day — come and gone, the season has entered full swing. Several of the summer weekends will be crowded at the box office with sometimes three releases competing on similar dates. With action films like Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, A Quiet Place: Day One and Twisters taking us through July, some animated adventures like Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 will provide fun for whole families.
Deadpool 3 will cap off July with a new Marvel installment from Shawn Levy, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, making way for more sinister films ahead of fall like M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap and Alien: Romulus. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice deserves an honorable mention although it won’t hit theaters until September to lead into spooky season and October.

We're only 9 days away from Inside Out 2 arriving in theaters, and Pixar has released the final trailer for the sequel (via Toonado.com). That puts the spotlight on many of Riley's new emotions, including a fun take on Nostalgia.
Maya Hawke's Anxiety commands much of the screentime here, though, and Joy actress Amy Poehler recently dropped some hints about that character in an interview with Refinery29 Australia.
"Anxiety shows up for a reason," she told the site. "I think we tend to want to push anxiety away - 'Don't worry about it, it's fine!' We want to kind of get it out of our life. But what I think is really cool is they [the filmmakers] let anxiety show up to protect Riley."

Pixar isn’t pulling any punches when its new film, Inside Out 2, comes to cinemas on June 14. At a time when films come to digital and streaming services alarmingly fast, Pixar says Inside Out 2 will get an extended theatrical run in favor of being rushed to Disney+ shortly after release.
Speaking with Bloomberg, Pixar president Jim Morris says Inside Out 2 is playing in theaters for at least 100 days. “I hope that we will not release another feature film on Disney+,” Morris explained. “If we do more stuff for Disney+, it should be a series, and then that makes a clean demarcation between what we do for theaters and what we do for streaming.”

It’s no secret that sequel films typically send people running to movie theater seats. They’re a safe bet for a studio like Walt Disney — if audiences loved an original film, they’re sure to enjoy a new adventure with the same charismatic characters and the addition of some new ones (preferably one that can be turned into profitable theme park plushies). For better or worse, Disney has boarded the sequel train and doesn’t seem to be hopping off anytime soon. For the next solid three years, the studio has multiple sequel projects slated to drop — ranging anywhere between the second and fifth film of a franchise. While it can be nice to revisit fan-favorite universes like ‘Avatar’ and ‘Toy Story,’ there’s also a major demand for Disney to return to their original storytelling roots. Walt Disney himself was incredibly opposed to sequels, saying he always had...

Pixar director Kelsey Mann pitched “Inside Out 2” (in theaters June 14) as a hostile takeover of Riley’s (Kensington Tallman) emotions during the onslaught of puberty, led by Anxiety (Maya Hawke) and cohorts Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser).
“What if this version is like them going: ‘[Joy], you’re wonderful, but you need to get out of here,'” Mann said at a recent Pixar press junket. “And so I always pitched it as a takeover movie.” But there’s nothing sinister about Anxiety leading the revolt. Like Joy (Amy Poehler), she merely wants to protect Riley, but believe she’s more qualified to handle her teen angst now that she’s turned 13.
In fact, Mann found it analogous to “All About Eve,” with Anxiety as the emotional ingenue willing at first to support Joy and learn from her. That is, until she realizes that...

After pioneering feature length computer animated features with "Toy Story," Pixar Animation became the gold standard for the medium. But it wasn't just because of the innovative animation style providing a new palette for storytelling. Like the many Walt Disney Animation movies that came in the decades before Pixar rose to prominence, the filmmakers at Pixar had a knack for finding the perfect voices for their characters. Whether it was Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as Woody and Buzz Lightyear or Patton Oswalt as Remy in "Ratatoiulle," Pixar has always let the perfect voices shine in their work, even if they don't come from the biggest stars. That's especially true with "Inside Out."

Pixar's "Inside Out 2" is coming to theaters this summer, bringing back the delightful emotions at the helm of a girl named Riley as she grows up and figures out life as a teenager. The original "Inside Out" not only delivered the touching and amusing personification of the emotions that drive our everyday decisions, but they also created an innovative world that created physical representations of the inner workings of our mind, such as a literal train of thought and a massive library of past experiences that make up long term memory. So the sequel will be expanding the interior of Riley's mind, not only with new emotions, but with unexplored areas.
Of course, the arrival of Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adele Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) make things much more difficult for the seasoned emotions of Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black...

In 2015, pioneering animation studio Pixar once again gave audiences something that’s never been seen before through Inside Out. The film that dealt with the inner workings of a young 11-year-old girl’s mind, was unique in the way feelings and emotions were given tangible qualities and became actual characters in the narrative.

Inside Out 2 will introduce Anxiety as one of Riley’s new emotions and rather appropriately, Pixar looked at Uncut Gems as a reference.
Inside Out may very well be one of the finest animated films of the last few decades and Pixar is currently busy getting a sequel, Inside Out 2, ready for release in June.

When Pixar released "Inside Out" back in 2015, the studio introduced us to five core emotions inside the mind of Riley, an 11-year old girl leaving her hometown of Minnesota and moving with her parents to a new home in San Francisco. That came with a lot of complicated feelings, and the emotions of Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling) helped Riley worked through all the hurdles, allowing the feelings to learn something about themselves and the girl they've nurtured over the years.

At the end of March, I had the thrilling opportunity to travel to San Francisco, California, to visit Pixar Animation Studios for a Press Day preview of the upcoming animated sequel, Inside Out 2. Kelsey Mann directs Inside Out 2 for his feature directorial debut after helming episodes of the Megas Xlr TV series, an episode of the Green Screen Show, and the Pixar short Party Central, featuring characters from Pete Docter’s Monsters Inc.
Riley (Kensington Tallman), the central character of 2015’s Inside Out, returns for the sequel. She’s entering her “terrible teens,” and the emotions inside her head – Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), Disgust (Liza Lapira) – are frantically trying to course-correct as new emotions – Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) – arrive in Riley’s Mind Space.

In 2015, Pixar's "Inside Out" introduced us to a wonderful ensemble of characters in the form of five core emotions inside the mind of an 11-year old girl named Riley. Joy (Amy Poehler) was the leader of the crew, trying to keep Riley happy all the time. Sadness (Phyllis Smith) was constantly stressing out Joy by making Riley feel down in the dumps. Anger (Lewis Black) came out when Riley just couldn't deal anymore, Fear (Bill Hader) made sure Riley kept herself safe, though sometimes irrationally scared, and Disgust (Mindy Kaling) ensured that she never ate broccoli or dealt with anything cringey that might upset her.
In "Inside Out 2," all the core emotions are comfortable in keeping Riley on the straight and narrow, complete with a new belief system and sense of self (more on that in our full footage reaction from our visit to Pixar Animation), even though...
