Richard Eagleton is ecstatic. The aspiring tech entrepreneur from Des Plaines, Illinois, has just shown off his great invention, Kenn, the world’s first AI stand-up comedian, “powered by 5G for 100 percent accurate comedy.” After Kenn delivers a couple of glitchy, half-baked jokes about self-checkout machines, bad dates, and being a “fucking garbage person for real,” Eagleton bounds onstage and says with frenzied glee, “That was incredible! Oh, my God, everyone was laughing, everyone was experiencing social cohesion! There were no stabbings, there were no shootings, no robbery!”

"They have a very cinematic approach to anime. They don't want to anything that is generic or cliched, and that's how I feel about my art as well." Netflix's new anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is already available to watch streaming. For one final promotion, Netflix has unveiled a 10 minute behind-the-scenes video taking us to Japan where the animation studio Science Saru is located. Based on the comic books by Canadian creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, the anime is inspired by Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs the World movie but is directly pulled from the comics themselves. They explain this video that the voice cast recorded first, then they animated the series with the voices already in place - the opposite of what usually happens in Japan. This anime series is also quite diverse - it's showrun by Canadian Bryan Lee O'Malley and American BenDavid Grabinski, directed by Spanish animation director Abel Gongora,...

‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ Creators On Season 2: “We’re Not Working On It. We Have No Official Ideas”
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off creators Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski are opening up about the possibilities of a second season for their animated series.
Although the Netflix show has received favorable reviews, O’Malley and Grabinski are not currently planning a sequel and have made this a one-and-done show — for now.
“It’s self-contained for now. We loved what we did. We put it all in there. We don’t have any ideas lying on the floor. We pretty much put them all in,” O’Malley told Rolling Stone in an interview. “I never say never, but right now, it seems like it would take about 50 different miracles simultaneously for another season to happen. So we’ll see.”
O’Malley added, “People are always complaining about how shows get canceled after one season. So we hedged our bets immediately, and tried to make a self-contained one season.”

Jon Cryer is returning to comedy in NBC’s Extended Family alongside Abigail Spencer and Donald Faison.
The peacock network just dropped a first look at the sitcom where the cast talks about their experience working together.
“It’s a throuple but not in the naughty way,” Spencer says in the featurette of the premise of the show.
Spencer also notes that she had “been admiring and watching Jon Cryer’s work for many, many a year and to actually be able to be in the scenes with him is really unbelievable.” Faison echoed Spencer’s sentiment about working opposite the Two and a Half Men alum saying “Is a dream come true.”
The show created by Mike O’Malley follows Jim (Cryer) and Julia (Spencer) after an amicable divorce, deciding to continue to raise their kids at the family home while taking turns on who gets to stay with them.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses several major plot developments throughout the animated series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” currently streaming on Netflix.
On a bright day in late October, the creators of the new Netflix anime series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, sit inside a Los Angeles arcade bar, trying to look relaxed.
“This is going to be a relief,” Grabinski says. But he doesn’t look quite convinced.
On its face, their show is the second adaptation of O’Malley’s beloved “Scott Pilgrim” graphic novel series, about the titular 20-something Canadian, his new American girlfriend, Ramona, and his quest to defeat her seven evil exes to stay with her. The first adaptation, of course, is director Edgar Wright’s 2010 cult movie “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” But even though the entire cast of that film — including Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Jason Schwartzman and Aubrey Plaza — returned to voice their characters,...

When “Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life” first released in August 2004, a key part of the graphic novel’s premise was a major third-act surprise. Some talk of “subspace travel” aside, the first 100 pages of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s breakout hit tell an ordinary slice-of-life tale about an unemployed Canadian slacker, his terrible band, the 17 year-old he’s sort of dating, and the cool American girl he actually wants to date. In the comic’s third act, title hero Scott gets assaulted on stage by Matthew Patel, one of the seven evil exes of Ramona Flowers, and the story suddenly reveals that A) Scott is one of the best hand-to-hand fighters in Toronto and B) everything is taking place in a universe that obeys video game logic, with crazy superpowers and extra lives and level ups.
At the time, the climax of “Precious Little Life” was a massive rug-pull moment.

The first episode of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off seems designed to make even the most passionate fans of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comic books — or the cult classic film Edgar Wright made from them — wonder if perhaps they’ve had their fill of Scott and friends up in Toronto. Much of the premiere, written by O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, is simply recreating scenes familiar from the comics and the movie. The dialogue is tweaked here...

The journey may not have been mapped out exactly as fans expected, but Netflix’s anime-style Scott Pilgrim Takes Off ultimately arrives at a happy ending for its titular slacker and the girl of his dreams. (All the better that it comes after an unimaginably epic team-up of Ramona’s exes.)
But is everything really wrapped up? A mid-credits scene in Episode 8 finds Gideon/Gordon (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) menacingly suggesting that it’s “time for the real game to begin,” with Julie (Aubrey Plaza) hyping him up: “The Goose is loose! Honk honk, f–kers!”

The "Street Fighter"-inspired directive in Bryan O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" comic and its Edgar Wright-directed 2010 movie adaptation is a simple one: 23-year-old Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) must defeat the seven Evil Exes of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) in order to date her. He kicks all of their butts and does some soul-searching to better himself for Ramona. Loosely inspired by O'Malley's early adulthood, the Toronto-set "Scott Pilgrim" is a superlative tale about starting new relationships after messy breakups and the past romantic ties that haunt you and your new partner. In Scott's world of video game vernacular and shōnen-inspired duels, an ex might try to behead their ex's new beau with a ninja katana.
Almost two decades after the first "Scott Pilgrim" comic, the "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" Netflix anime signifies that O'Malley rethought Ramona's dynamic with her Evil Exes.

"Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is full of surprises. The new Netflix anime "reboot" of the familiar franchise, which features characters from Bryan Lee O'Malley's comics (O'Malley co-created the show) and voice actors from Edgar Wright's movies, takes a narrative left turn right out of the gate. Instead of winning his fight against Ramona's first evil ex Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha), Scott (Michael Cera) loses, seemingly dying and staying dead for the majority of the season.
That isn't the only major twist in the increasingly meta series, though. Fans also get a time-traveling older Scott (Will Forte), several unlikely romantic couplings, an arc featuring a filmmaker named Edgar Wrong, and redemption stories for several major villains. In general, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" seems to take the road less traveled by O'Malley's first version of the story, reimagining its bad...

When filmmakers suffer disappointments at the box office, they often take comfort in other theatrical flops that still stood the test of time, such as Blade Runner and The Shawshank Redemption. Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World now has the surprisingly good fortune of being one of those examples. In the summer of 2010, despite significant buzz and rapturous responses from sneak previews at San Diego Comic-Con, the inventive and engaging action-comedy based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels opened to just $10.6 million en route to a disheartening $49.2 million.
But even before the end of that calendar year, Wright could sense that a cult audience had already developed through specialty screenings and the rare DVD press tour for a box office failure. He then felt that word of mouth grow even more over the years, and it soon proved itself in tangible form, as merchandise and additional home releases kept getting made.

Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy is one of those movie trilogies that is linked in nearly every way except narratively. In other words, while visual elements, themes, actors and even jokes repeat between 2004's "Shaun of the Dead," 2007's "Hot Fuzz" and 2013's "The World's End," the films don't actually share any characters or even take place in the same universe. That's because it was formed as a joke in and of itself at first, with a throwaway reference to the Italian mini-ice cream cones in "Shaun" leading to Wright and actor/co-writer Simon Pegg attempting to emulate (and lightly parody) other thematic trilogies such as the "Three Colours" trilogy by Krzysztof Kieślowski.
Ever since "The World's End," there's been no further reference to Cornettos or the characters and events in the Trilogy in Wright's work — until now. As Wright's film adaptation of creator Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" series of comics,...

The cult classic movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, adapting the Scott Pilgrim comic book series created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, has been lovingly adapted into the Netflix original anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
Though boasting the cast from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World reprising their fan-favorite roles and an animation style lovingly recreating O’Malley’s own art style, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off features some significant deviations from both the comic story and cinematic adaptation. With O’Malley himself, joined by co-writer and executive producer BenDavid Grabinski (and movie director Edgar Wright), Scott Pilgrim Takes Off subverts the expectations of even the most diehard Scott Pilgrim fans, keeping the story feeling fresh and exciting without compromising what made it great in the first place.

"Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is not a remake of the 2010 Edgar Wright movie, or just another adaptation of the Bryan Lee O'Malley comic. Instead, this anime takes the same approach as the "Rebuild of Evangelion" movies, taking everything beloved and great about the source material and remixing it into an original tale that comments on, interrogates, and ultimately improves on the original. This is not the story you knew, and it is better for it.
Like the first of the "Evangelion" movies, "You Are (Not) Alone," the show starts out with an almost shot-for-shot recreation of the first volume of the comic, up until Scott's first fight with one of Ramona's evil exes. Except here, Scott loses the fight and all hell breaks loose. From there, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" tells an original story that diverges from the original timeline of the story — and there is a very good reason for it.

Because of Netflix’s very restrictive requests regarding what critics can and cannot reveal about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, I can’t tell you how or why it’s different or what the differences do to the themes of O’Malley’s fantastical story. Heck, I can’t even tell you if there are guest stars, much less who they are or who they play.

From its marketing and anime-styled opening credits, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off could be confused for a straightforward adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series, albeit one determined not to step on the toes of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Many scenes from the Netflix series, particularly in the first episode, are staged almost identically to their equivalents in Wright’s 2010 film, and the entire cast returns to voice their animated counterparts. Once again, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is poised to fight the seven evil exes of his dream girl, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).
By the time the first episode concludes, however, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has firmly announced its intention to go in another direction, as well as clarified the meaning of its title in the process: that Scott Pilgrim is nowhere to be found.

By the time the first episode concludes, however, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has firmly announced its intention to go in another direction, as well as clarified the meaning of its title in the process: that Scott Pilgrim is nowhere to be found.

When it was released in 2010, Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was considered a disappointment. It grossed less than $50 million at the box office, on a reported production budget of $85 million. And the reviews, while mostly positive, were less than enthusiastically so.
In hindsight, though, Wright’s adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s beloved 2000s series of graphic novels was simply ahead of its time. Its mash-up of genre and tone, and its ability to make absurd comic book imagery work in live-action, has earned it an ever-increasing cult following.

Exclusive: That was quick. Just four days after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, including a weekend, the new NBC multi-camera comedy series Extended Family started production on Monday Nov. 13.
Mike O’Malley’s family comedy, starring Jon Cryer, Abigail Spencer and Donald Faison, had shot six episodes before the strike. The series, from Lionsgate Television and Universal Television, had scripts ready to go, allowing the studios to get everyone in place within a couple of days after the end of the actors work stoppage.
Lionsgate TV Chairman Kevin Beggs alluded to the fast turnaround on Lionsgate’s earnings call last Thursday, Nov. 9, the day the SAG-AFTRA strike ended.
“We’re back to production immediately,” he said. “We have two network comedies that start shooting again on Monday.”
Beggs did not provide titles but according to sources, he was referring to Extended Family, which started production Monday and indie studio’s single-camera comedy Ghosts,...

Hope you have some extra quarters handy, because “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is nearly here. And just to make sure you’re extra jazzed, you can watch the terrific new trailer above. The animated series launches on Netflix on November 17.
There isn’t much in the way of plot in the teaser, but you can see all of your favorite characters, including Scott (Michael Cera), Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Lucas Lee (Chris Evans), who are getting involved in all sorts of brand-new hijinks. The official log line reads: “Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, but learns he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. Then things get even more complicated.”
The jaw-dropping animation (from Japanese studio Science Saru) harkens back to both the comic book and the movie, which drew inspiration from cartoons and vidoegames. There is also, of course, a rocking new score,...

Michael Cera reunites with Sex Bob-Omb — this time in animated form — for Netflix’s upcoming anime “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.” The eight-episode series is helmed by animation studio Science Saru, and follows the cult-favorite story of bass-playing title character Scott Pilgrim and his battle of the bands and the exes.
The new Netflix show follows Edgar Wright’s 2010 action rom-com “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” which was based on the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley.
Animated characters of “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” are voiced almost entirely by actors of the 2010 film. This post contains spoilers about the latest episode of "Succession."
Fascism has been bleeding into "Succession" for years now, but you'd be forgiven if you didn't really notice. The drama has consistently sidelined talk about the rise of authoritarianism, relegating the most serious global news to quick asides that the Roy family often sandwiches in between cutting insults and emotional breakdowns.
The show is a satire at heart, but its sharpest commentary comes between the lines, as the self-absorbed siblings think as much about their massive influence over American politics as they do about what they'll be having for lunch. In the latest episode, Kendall (Jeremy Strong) even jokes offhand about inheriting his dad's political contact sheet, including "crypto-fascists," "right-wing nut jobs," "venture capital Dems," and "centrist ghouls." As its final season kicks into high gear, though, it's becoming increasingly clear that the personal lives of the "Succession" ensemble are...

Guess who's drunk — er, starring in his own animated show? More than a decade after hitting theaters in 2010, Edgar Wright's commercial failure turned cult classic "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" is getting an official continuation in the form of an anime series. The original movie, which adapts Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" comic books, centers on the eponymous Mr. Pilgrim (Michael Cera), a 22-year-old under-achieving Toronto musician who falls head over heels for the enigmatic Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). The only catch? To date Ramona, Scott must first battle her seven "evil" exes, who range from egotistical film stars to bassists with vegan superpowers.
One could call "Scott Pilgrim" the "Short Term 12" of comic book films in that it features many actors who've gone on to become far bigger names since its release ... including, amusingly enough, the star of "Short Term 12" itself, Brie Larson. It's also...

Hollywood reunion content has been milked dry in a major shift toward playing into audience nostalgia. Early in the pandemic, casts reunited over Zoom for table reads. While that happens less now, it’s only been replaced by revivals and years-too-late sequels missing the core of what made the film and television program great to begin with. But as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World returns as an anime series on Netflix, its creators are going all in.

The untitled series will hit Netflix in the future.
“One of the proudest and most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling and working with the dynamite cast of ‘Scott Pilgrim,’” Wright, an executive producer on the new project, said in a statement. “Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&As, remembrances, and charity read-throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the whole gang on an actual project. Amrit Kapai and Nicholas Kouchoukos’ Family Karma wedding hung in the balance when Nicholas felt as though Amrit’s mother was trying to take over the celebration.
The last episode ended with Nicholas moving his mic and going alone to his hotel room after becoming frustrated with Amrit’s mother during dinner. Amrit felt as though he was stuck between what his parents and future husband wanted for the wedding.
Close friend Anisha Ramakrishna told Showbiz Cheat Sheet that she knew there was tension leading up to the ceremony. But she could understand both parties’ sides. “I knew there were issues and I knew there were quarrels happening as there are in any wedding planning process,” she recalled. “And to see it, I actually feel for both parties because I am the daughter of an Indian Auntie. So I get where they’re coming from because they are very hands-on.
