Although “Somebody I Used To Know” takes some of its cues from “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “Young Adult,” director Dave Franco’s feature blessedly doesn’t overly rely on its cinematic predecessors. He and co-writer Alison Brie deliver the goods in their own hilarious, heartrending story about an emotionally stunted woman who returns home and attempts to wreck her former beau’s current relationship. The romantic comedy genre’s broad, patented hijinks and hilarity are indeed on display, but cleverly cloaked by a beautifully-realized portrait of delicately faceted characters and their relatable conundrums.
TV producer Ally (Brie) is having a tough go at life. The dessert-themed reality show she poured all her time and talent into has been cancelled after three seasons, and she’s creatively blocked trying to come up with a hot new idea to sell. Her love life’s a mess and she has no friendships beyond her orange tabby cat.

“All the characters have such individuality that it really helps the costume design process, and I feel really inspired by each of them” exclaims Amanda Needham, the costume designer for Hulu’s “Shrill.” The comedy, which stars Aidy Bryant as an aspiring journalist in Portland, Oregon, is in its second season and has already been renewed for a third season. In our exclusive video interview (watch above), Needham, a two-time Emmy winner for her costumes on “Portlandia,” discusses her process working with Bryant and capturing the individuality of Portland fashion.

If you believe in love at first sight, that’s how our story started,” she says. Needham begins her process by working with Bryant, who is also an executive producer on the series, by looking at each scene and discussing each character’s style. “I think we really have an easy working relationship...

In one of the final episodes of the second season of Hulu’s “Shrill,” Annie, played by Aidy Bryant, says, “It’s such a hunt to find cool clothes for fat women.”
After two seasons, the messaging in “Shrill” is that there is a story to tell about women (and people) who have been seemingly invisible throughout fashion history. Costume designer Amanda Needham feels that message may be getting across, finally. More than a few designers reached out to her after seeing Season 1 of the show. Nooworks — a bold-look company that designs for all shapes and sizes — ended up on Bryant in Season 2, along with her own line, Pauline.
“The fact that we have the resources to create Annie’s wardrobe makes the show really rich,” says executive producer and writer Lindy West, whose 2016 “Shrill: Notes From a Loud Woman” was a New York Times best-seller. “It’s not real life.

If you fell in love with Aidy Bryant's outfits on Shrill and have found you need them in your life and closet, you're out of luck. As costume designer Amanda Needham revealed in an interview with Vulture earlier this week, almost all of Annie's stunning outfits had to be made from scratch, or altered from off-the-rack, because they couldn't find cute plus-size clothes. "Once you get to a certain size, people sort of want you to disappear," Needham told the site. "What about the people who aren't ashamed of showing their bodies, who want it to be more tailored and appealing stylistically?" The fact that almost none of Annie's clothes are readily available is pretty...
