After kicking off a long goodbye tour last year, Nofx will play their final concert this fall in Southern California. The group will sunset its four-decade career with a three-night stand — Oct. 4, 5, and 6 — supported by a who’s who of punk and hardcore bands. Dropkick Murphys, Descendents, and Pennywise will all perform with the band at San Pedro’s Berth 46. The dates, officially the Punk in Drublic Fest, conclude what Nofx have called the Final Tour: 40 Years, 40 Cities, 40 Songs Per Day.

Nofx are playing their final shows ever later this year, but the punk veterans aren’t done releasing new music. Fat Mike and company have announced a five-song collection titled Half Album, out April 19th via Fat Wreck Chords. As a preview, they’ve shared the lead single, “I’m a Rat.”
In a press statement, Mike described Half Album as the fifth side of a double album also combining their last two full-lengths, 2021’s Single Album and 2022’s Double Album. “These songs were all recorded at the same time,” he explained. “It just takes me a while to finish shit. So, this is me tying up loose ends, which is very good for the soul.”
Meanwhile, the lead single “I’m a Rat” has an interesting origin story. Written by Mike, it contains 54 chords and was first recorded by the Japanese punk band Hi-Standard before a second version was...

When punk legends Nofx first revealed plans for their farewell tour in September 2022, frontman Fat Mike promised, “Los Angeles will be the last place we play. It’s where we started, it’s where we’ll end.” Over two years later, the band has announced that their five-decade run will come to an end in October 2024 with a three-night stand in their native California.
Before that, however, Nofx have lined up another string of dates for their farewell tour, which was previously dubbed “40 Years, 40 Cities, 40 Songs” due to each gig’s unique 40-song setlist.

Fishbone are ringing in their belated 40th anniversary with a new self-titled EP, out May 26th, and the ska legends accompanied the announcement with a new single and collab with Nofx titled “Estranged Fruit.”
The track offers the best of both bands, with Fishbone joined by Nofx’s El Hefe on trumpet in the horn-laden backbone of the arrangement, and Fat Mike backing Angelo Moore’s lead vocals. There’s even some fast-paced pop punk in the track, most noticeably during the race-to-the-finish ending. Fat Mike also handled the production of the song and EP.
“‘Estranged Fruit’ is a timeless composition merging the past and present embodied by the irony of us repeating what should be in the rear view mirror of a so called evolved society that still has far to go,” commented Fishbone’s Chris Dowd, who returned to the band in 2018 after stepping away in 1994 (one of...

Ska-funk-rock-punk-metal masters Fishbone have shared the new song “All We Have Is Now,” which is included on the Bottle Music for Broken People label comp via Fat Mike’s Bottles to the Ground imprint.
The track is signature Fishbone with its joyous horns and funky rhythms. Its positive lyrical message also serves as a poignant reminder to live in the present: “All we have is now.”
“Philosophically, it’s far from a new concept,” notes Fishbone’s Norwood Fisher in a press release. “Eckard Tolle, Allan Watts, Joseph Campbell and many others have contemplated and pontificated on this topic. The pursuit of self inquest, in the hopes of experiencing an extended, extraordinary sense of Being, the song, wrapped in a fully blown Fishbone party, reminds me to take advantage of the gift of the ever present now. When the D.O.C. spoke with Rolling Stone last week about the excellent new documentary about his life, he dropped a bombshell: He had been recording new music for the first time in decades. Ever since a 1989 car wreck damaged his vocal cords, the gravelly-voiced rapper — who had previously released the platinum-selling No One Can Do It Better in 1988 and written rhymes for N.W.A — had recorded only one full album, 1996’s Helter Skelter, and made only a few appearances himself on another, 2003’s The Deuce.

Beat Cop (2017) puts you in the shoes of Jack Kelly, a detective who has been demoted to uniformed officer after allegedly stealing a senator’s diamonds. It’s a time management sim and a point and click action game, set in a downtrodden, 1980’s Brooklyn street. It has similar bureaucratic, Kafka-esque overtures to Papers, Please (2013) but Beat Cop looks for its story to take centre stage.
You start your first beat under the tutorage of experienced cop, Fat Mike. All goes well, he shows you the beat, introduces you to the various characters and businesses you’ll look after on your patrol, but gets gunned-down in a drive-by shooting at the end of the day. Things start to unravel quickly from that point.

After “Midnight Ron,” I’m wondering if maybe I was being a bit hasty in my judgment of Archer’s newly minted step-father, Ron. Prior to this week’s episode, we hardly knew him. To us, he was, as Malory put it, “the most boringest man alive” (but not quite in those words).
With this episode, however, Reed once again masterfully brings a new character completely into the fold, initiating him as just another one of the gang, so to speak. Ron might only be Archer’s step-father, but “Midnight Ron” shows he’s closer to his step-son than either of them (or Malory, especially) would like to admit.
Archer’s rapid-fire references still fly as far over Ron’s head as Archer did from his trunk, yet there is one thing they found to bond over: doing things they know will just stick in Malory’s craw (phrasing!). My...

Aside from the disappointing performance of The Five-Year Engagement, it's been a pretty quiet year for Jason Segel, who seems to be taking a breather after pouring all of his blood, sweat and tears into The Muppets. He will also appear in Judd Apatow's This is 40 in December, but aside from that there has not been much immediately on the horizon for him. This week, however, 20th Century Fox has picked up a project that he is setting up with the help of screenwriter Drew Pearce (No Heroics). The movie is a fictionalized adaptation of the documentary The Other "F" Word, which revolves around punk rock musicians becoming fathers. Segel is currently attached to star... we can only hope Paul Rudd will show up to "slappa da bass" as well. According to Variety, Fox acquired the pitch in a "competitive situation", which may or may not mean there was a bidding war involved.

For those of us who grew up on the catchy beats and jangly guitars of bands like Nofx and Everclear, and are now trying to raise our own kids, F Word was pretty compelling. Jason Segel also hopes that the material can be pretty funny. The Muppets star reportedly is co-writing a comedic pitch riffing on The Other F Word with Drew Pearce, and the duo has sold the pitch to 20th Century Fox, according to THR. It's Friday!
It's my wife's birthday this weekend and I bought her a kegerator because she brews her own beer. It's kind of selfish of me because I just want her to make me beer to drink. It all works out for the best!
The Slope's Desiree Akhavan has started a column at Filmmaker magazine and it is hilarious, as you might have guessed.
Joe Biden told a lesbian couple gay marriage is "going to happen." He didn't say when, exactly, so I'll just keep my wedding dress in the closet for now. I'm looking for any excuse to wear it again.
Out artist K8 Hardy is on the cover of Fort Worth Weekly and they have a pretty in-depth profile piece of her work and her family, who still live in Texas.

Sex Advice From Nofx The venerable Fat Mike on punk homophobia, his first sexual experience, and the value of good listening. by Peter Malamud Smith Revered San Francisco punk legends Nofx release their twelfth studio album, Self-Entitled, today. For certain Nerve editors who were obsessed with them in high school, this marks an exciting opportunity. You've been what you call a "gay positive" band for a long time. Well, no one in the band's gay, so we weren't that gay positive until we started flying a gay flag maybe ten years ago. But we did have pro-gay songs before that — a song called "The Black and White," the Liza and Louise stuff. That's always been our politics. As years go by we get more and more bears at our shows, and gay couples feel comfortable going to Nofx shows and being [...]...

A sad day for No Use for a Name fans. Tony Sly, the frontman for the Northern California-based punk rock band, has died of as yet undisclosed causes. He was 41. We have lost an incredible talent, friend, and father—one of the true greats. [Producer] Fat Mike had this to say: 'One of my dearest friends and favorite song writers has gone way too soon. Tony, you will be greatly missed.'" Sly joined the band in 1989, replacing founding member John Meyer, and they released...

The process of rebelling is often against your own past and, in that spirit during the magic of SXSW, The Other F Word is a compelling documentary I happened to stumble into after being talked out of seeing a different film on the bus ride over to the theater. The documentary chronicles punk rockers turning 40, having families and having to tour to pay the mortgage (to the man!).
Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director Andrea Blaugrund Nevins‘ The Other F Word opens around the country this month and next via Oscilloscope Laboratories. A version of this review first ran as part of our coverage of South by Southwest 2011.
When Roger Daltrey first sang "My Generation" and said he hoped he'd die before he got old, just how old was he talking about? The guys's 67 and not only is he not dead, he's still singing that song. That's the weird thing about rock stars: they get older but their songs -- and their fans -- stay the same age. When Jim Lindberg started the punk band Pennywise, he was 23. Now he's in his mid-40s with a wife and three young daughters. On stage, he's still the same obnoxious guy he was two decades ago, still singing about effing authority. Off stage, his big concern is making sure he's home from touring in time for the big father/daughter dance. Reconciling those two sides of his personality is hard and getting harder.

Fat Mike (Nofx) with his daughter before school Life...is...funny. One day you're on stage violently gripping a microphone to your mouth to enrage an audience of thousands with lyrics demanding that all walls of authority be torn down. The next day you're gently gripping a milk bottle to your baby daughter's lips while softly warning her older sisters to get ready for bed or there will be consequences. Ah, life. In director Andrea Blaugrund Nevins' upcoming documentary debut The Other F Word, punk rock legends including Mark Hoppus of Blink-182, Flea of Rock Hot Chili Peppers, Tim Mcllrath of Rise Against, and Jim Lindberg of Pennywise grapple with reconciling the responsibility of Fatherhood with their public identities as mouthpieces for anarchy, destruction, and not giving a f***. While it's hilarious to enjoy mohawked and tattooed punk rock stars succumbing to the whims of their adorable children while...

An absolutely fantastic trailer has just come out from Oscilloscope Laboratories, the rising distribution company set up by Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, for the latest film they’re putting out, The Other F Word.
The documentary is set to be a brilliant look at the new roles that some of punk-rock’s biggest heroes have taken up after wearing that other f word, Fatherhood, like a badge of honour.
“This revealing and touching film asks what happens when a generation’s ultimate anti-authoritarians — punk rockers — become society’s ultimate authorities — dads. With a large chorus of punk rock’s leading men – Blink-182′s Mark Hoppus, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath – The Other F Word follows Jim Lindberg, a 20-year veteran of the skate punk band Pennywise, on his hysterical and moving journey from belting his band’s anthem “F–k Authority,” to embracing...

How can you be punk rock and a parent? The Other F-Word explores that question by examining the lives of a bunch of famous dudes who are giving it a go. In the rather touching trailer for this documentary, which arrives in theaters this fall, you’ll see The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, Blink-182′s Mark Hoppus, Black Flag’s Ron Reyes, and more than a dozen other musicians dealing with the challenges of raising a child — “homework, bath, bed” — in their line of wild work. “The two dominatrixes on my arm,” says Nofx’s Fat Mike while pointing to his tattoos,...

Nofx frontman Fat Mike wants to do his part to put the sin in "Sin City" -- by making his crazy Vegas crib available as a vacation rental for anyone who wants to party like a punk rock star. The 3-bedroom, 2-bath house is a few minutes from the strip -- and is completely pimped out with thousands of punk concert flyers and memorabilia. We're told the tricked-out punk pad comes complete with a 9-hole putting green,...

The -- Fuck Authority -- attitude of punk rock is as abrasive as it is honest,...

While I claim to be a tomboy and up until the age of 22 or so I couldn't imagine having babies (I was scared to even hold one lest I drop it), lately my ovaries have been crying out every time I see a tiny pair of shoes. Thus, when I saw the synopsis for The Other F Word at SXSW, I knew it was a documentary I Had to see; it's a narrative following various iconic punk rock musicians around as they discuss the responsibilities and life-changing aspects of going from anarchist role models to daddies.
The film is directed and written by Andrea Blaugrund, a strong female who rocked a leather jacket and motorcycle boots at the premiere. She is obviously in love with counterculture, and had been friends with Jim Lindberg of Pennywise for a long time. She was made...
