“Air” music supervisor Andrea von Foerster received a music playlist from Ben Affleck titled 1984. “It was literally my childhood,” she says of the song collection that featured classic ’80s hits including “Africa” by Toto, “Candy Girl” by New Edition and “Jump” by Van Halen.
The Affleck-helmed film, set in that same year, navigates Nike’s bid to land NBA player Michael Jordan and explores his groundbreaking sponsorship deal with the company.
That playlist from the director and star of the film was the springboard for the 23 needle drops and 18 score cues “Air” features. In curating the film’s needle drops, von Foerster wasn’t just using music to play against what was on screen — “the music was used as a showcase to tell a story,” she says.
Her goal was to use music from the year authentically, visually and musically where the lyrics would often match what was being seen on-screen.

If you're still reeling from the ending of American Horror Story's last season, sharpen up, folks! Season nine is a confirmed go, and there are so many details we need to know before it premieres. Perhaps most glaringly, we need a full cast list now that we know the official theme is American Horror Story: 1984.
Luckily, the powers that be (aka creator Ryan Murphy) decided to smile on us and reveal several of the cast members - many of them are Ahs veterans - with an '80s-tastic teaser. The Instagram video shows the cast dressed to the nines while strutting their stuff to Dan Hartman's "I Can Dream About You," and of course, they're at a Summer camp. Of course, we expected to see some Ahs alums, but we're excited to have some new stars take their moment to shine, like last season's breakout star, Cody Fern.

We finally have a decent look at the cast and style of American Horror Story: 1984. The ninth season of the FX show has so far been marketed through a few oblique teases, and the disappointing news of a reduced role for Sarah Paulson and other series mainstays. Ryan Murphy broke the silence today though as he shared the ‘camera tests’ from the first day of shooting via Instagram.
It’s fair to say that American Horror Story is doubling down on its period setting, with the teasers showcasing the cast in various ’80s outfits. The series of short Instagram videos include returning actors like Emma Roberts, as well as Billie Lourd, Cody Fern, Olympic medalist Gus Kenworthy and Angelica Ross. The footage combines roughly shot camera tests with the cast in what appears to be a summer camp cabin, supporting the theory that the new series has a slasher theme.

Matthew Morrison and Ryan Murphy are teaming up once again — but their next collaboration is a far cry from Glee.
Morrison has joined the cast of American Horror Story‘s ninth season, titled Ahs: 1984, Murphy revealed Thursday in an Instagram video. And he wasted no time in showing us Morrison’s character, who is rocking some ’80s facial hair and, um, seems to enjoy putting his physical assets on display. Ahs: 1984, the ninth season of FX's American Horror Story, is a campy take on the classic slasher movie genre.
We now know what comes after the Apocalypse: the 1980s! FX has officially announced that American Horror Story Season 9 is American Horror Story 1984... though stylized as Ahs: 1984.
A while back, FX ordered American Horror Story Season 9 to keep Ryan Murphy's horror anthology series as its longest running drama series ever – Oh, and the network also ordered American Horror Story Season 10 for good measure. Yet, it sounded like an oversight that Ahs Season 8's subtitle was "Apocalypse," since the series still had at least two more seasons to go. But that's the beauty of this whole thing! Ahs is an anthology series, with a cast and storyline that resets each iteration. It's a wonder that each season doesn't end with the utter destruction of humanity in the first place.

Yesterday news broke that — because nothing dead can ever die — NBC was developing a new take on the 1980s series "Hart to Hart," but, in what does seem like an interesting twist, this version will center on a gay couple. The synopsis, according to Deadline: Written by Christopher Fife (Revenge, Private Practice), based on the Sidney Sheldon-created original, the new "Hart To Hart" is described as a modern and sexy retelling of the classic series that focuses on “by the book” attorney Jonathan Hart and free-spirited investigator Dan Hartman, who must balance the two sides of their life: action-packed crime-solving in the midst of newly found domesticity. Here's the thing: There's already been a reboot of "Hart to Hart," and I don't know how NBC can possibly surpass it. In 2012, Adam Scott began his legendary attempts to create The Greatest Event in Television History for Adult Swim, the first of which was a shot-for-shot.

The Harts are going gay. Deadline reports that NBC is currently developing a gay remake of the early '80s ABC show Hart to Hart, which starred Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers as jet-setting sleuths. In their stead would be Jonathan Hart and Dan Hartman, a crime-solving power couple with Hart as the straitlaced attorney, and Hartman as the freewheeling investigator. Opposites attract — even for gay people! Carol Mendelsohn, best known for producing the CSI franchise, is working on the show, alongside scriptwriter Christopher Fife (Revenge and Private Practice). The project is currently just in development, though, which means it's still a long way from getting a pilot — and, more specifically, becoming a full-fledged show on network television. However, if it surmounts all of those hurdles, NBC's Hart to Hart would be the first gay remake of a classic on a major network. As demographic shifts continue, it makes sense...

Sony TV and producer Carol Mendelsohn are developing a contemporary remake of classic series "Hart to Hart" but to center it around a gay couple.
Sidney Sheldon's original show ran from 1979-1984 and eight further telefilms were produced in the 1990s. The story followed a wealthy couple (Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers) who often acted as amateur detectives.
The new version is described as a modern and sexy retelling which teams attorney Jonathan Hart and free-spirited investigator Dan Hartman who balance action-packed crime-solving with newly found domesticity.
Christopher Fife will pen the project which Mendelsohn and Julie Weitz will executive produce. The show already has a script commitment plus penalty at NBC.

Songs On Screen: All week HitFix will be featuring tributes by writers to their favorite musical moments from TV and film. Check out all the entries in the series here. When we talk about underrated directors, it's hard not to mention Walter Hill. Hill is an underrated director, the way Michael Ritchie and Peter Yates were underrated directors, the way Roger Donaldson, Joe Dante, and Fred Schepisi are underrated directors. They’re all underrated because it’s only when you look at their filmographies that the numbers start to total up and you realize, boy, he directed a lot of really good movies. In Hill’s case, that list includes "The Warriors," "48 Hours," "The Long Riders," "Southern Comfort,: "Hard Times," "Trespass," and "Wild Bill." Some great. Some solid. (My personal favorite of those is Hard Times, a pulpy film about bare-knuckle boxers in the Great Depression.) There were clunkers...

All Hallow's Eve. Fright Night! The Americanisation of British culture continues apace with yet another Halloween special on The X Factor.
As ever, our friends at ITV have published the list of songs to be performed, as well as the artist who performed the version being covered.
Halloween classics 'Bat Out of Hell' and 'Thriller' are of course present and correct. 'Highway To Hell' is also suitably screamy.
'Relight My Fire' is the Take That/Lulu version rather than the Dan Hartman disco classic. We think it's allowed because Hell is fiery and that.
'Everybody (Backstreet's Back)' gets in because of its spooky video, rather than the song itself.
Similarly, we're guessing 'Mad World' gets a pass because of Gary Jules's dark reworking for Richard Kelly's 2001 classic Donnie Darko, but Jay James will apparently be doing the bouncy Tears For Fears original.

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.

Music can make an average ad great. So why, Robin Hicks asks, is music the last thing a creative thinks about when writing an ad?
My favourite TV ad of the year so far is the Let Yourself Go spot for Kangaroo Island.
When it didn’t win Mumbrella’s Ad of the Month for March (it came third) I felt aggrieved for the agency that made it. But less so a week later when it emerged that the agency had paid celebrities to tweet nice things about its work.
Let Yourself Go is a stunning spot with lots of pretty images. But it would probably have had a similar effect on me if I’d watched a blank screen for 60 seconds.
John Baker of Adelaide ad agency Kwp!, which made the ad, told me that the music (Rise by Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder) “is 50% of the communication”. For me,...

Coles has reworked a version of 70′s disco track ‘Instant Replay’ for the launch of its new credit card.
The Coles version of the Dan Hartman classic replaces the word ‘Replay’ with ‘Reward’, alerting its customers to the ten dollars they will save on groceries when using the Coles MasterCard.
The ad was created by Ted Horton’s Big Red Agency, and breaks at the same time as Woolworths launched an ad to fight back against Coles in the freshness stakes.
Jon Church, Coles’ comms director, said: “It’s a bit of fun and in an otherwise fairly vanilla personal finance market should stand out. It’s a great product which we’re keen to shout about and a good example of the Coles brand ‘quality that costs less’ message stretching beyond food.”...

Dance music legend Loleatta Holloway passed away yesterday at the age of 64. Among her disco classics are "Hit and Run" and "Love Sensation," the latter of which was used in Marky Mark's 90's smash "Good Vibrations." My favorite was her collaboration with Dan Hartman on "Relight My Fire." She will be missed. The news we've been anxiously waiting for has arrived. TNT has officially renewed Southland for a ten-episode fourth season. This Kylie flash mob at the Sydney Opera House is incredible. it builds slowly until it hits a crescendo of utter joy.

For every classic theme song, a dozen are seemingly forgotten. Here’s our list of ten movie tunes that deserve to be rediscovered…
It seems like every studio-released movie today comes pre-packaged with a shiny soundtrack (Iron Man 2's AC/DC fest is a riff on 1986's Maximum Overdrive).
Sometimes a big hit emerges from the mix, but most often, songs used to promote the film in another venue, say iTunes, quickly disappear into the ether.
Gone, but not entirely forgotten, most, if not all, of the following songs from movies have found their way to the afterlife of YouTube.

Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls features the usual perks of a Russ Meyer flick (including a star turn by Dolly Read), great rapid-fire editing, and boasts a script full of quotable lines by Roger Ebert.
