My favorite scene in the hilarious new film “The Fall Guy” is the one where Emily Blunt (recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee for “Oppenheimer”) belts out the Phil Collins classic “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” as Ryan Gosling (recent Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee for “Barbie”) finds himself in a particularly dramatic — and dangerous — sequence of events.
As Blunt sang with all her heart, I couldn’t help but think of how perfect the timing was.
Forty years ago this very month, the famous power ballad had just completed a three-week reign on top of the Billboard Hot 100. “Against All Odds” was the title song from the romantic thriller starring Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward and James Woods. The Taylor Hackford-directed movie was met with solid reviews and healthy ticket sales. But its most notable success was Collins’s song, which quickly took the Billboard chart by storm.

This article marks Part 18 of the Gold Derby series analyzing 84 years of Best Original Song at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at the timeless tunes recognized in this category, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the winners.
The 1985 Oscar nominees in Best Original Song were:
“The Power of Love” from “Back to the Future”
“Surprise, Surprise” from “A Chorus Line”
“Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister)” from “The Color Purple”
“Say You, Say Me” from “White Nights”
“Separate Lives” from “White Nights”
Won: “Say You, Say Me” from “White Nights”
Should’ve won: “Separate Lives” from “White Nights”
If 1984 is a merely frustrating year of Best Original Song at the Oscars – given the lack of “Purple Rain” love and Stevie Wonder having defeated four marvelous songs with a decidedly inferior track – 1985 is a flat-out aggravating affair, a year featuring not one or two but five ho-hom pieces,...

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!

Stevie Nicks is many things: Goddess Of Rock, style icon, survivor, and today is her 64th Birthday. We could never hope to give her all of the proper respect she deserves, but here's a small tribute to her legacy of cryptic lyrics, ethereal stage presence, and shawls.
So many shawls ...
1. - "Landslide." The greatest song ever written. Timeless, and one of the most covered songs of all time, from The Dixie Chicks to anyone learning the guitar ... or performing drunken karaoke.
2. "Sisters Of The Moon" - Hands down the best track from Tusk, the chances that Stevie would write a song named "Sisters Of The Moon" were always pretty good.
3. "Gypsy" - One of the definitive Fleetwood Mac songs, and one of the greatest music videos ever made.
4.
5."Silver Spring" Such a beautiful song, it was originally supposed to be included on Rumours but was left off because there just...

In addition to her classic films, she's also my favorite music video artist of the 80's. "Little Bit of Heaven" is the 2nd greatest music video of the decade, and if you've never experienced it, you can check it out here. The homoeroticism drips off the screen.

The beauty of iTunes is that you can shop a la carte. The interesting thing is when you purchase an older song and find yourself wondering if anyone else has ever done it before or after you. Let’s use the power of the Internet to find out. List the songs you’d like to think someone else has bought. If you see a track on someone else’s list that you own, let them know they’re not alone. This is a shame-free zone. To prove it, here’s my list:

London -- British singer and drummer Phil Collins has used his personal website to announce his retirement in a bid to clarify recent speculation over his career.
In a post titled "Breaking News," the London-born multiple Grammy award winner said he wanted to explain his reasons "for calling it a day" in response to articles claiming he was quitting the music business.
"Many of the articles printed over the last few months have ended up painting a picture of me that is more than a little distorted," Collins, 60, explained in the message posted Monday.
He said he is stopping music so he can be a full time father to his two young sons "on a daily basis" – not because of bad reviews, bad press or because he doesn't "feel loved."
Speculation about a possible last act for Collins was sparked by an interview in April's issue of FHM magazine in...

In five short days, the four remaining contestants of American Idol's ninth season will hit the stage and tackle "Songs of the Cinema" under the watchful eye of guest mentor Jamie Foxx. Still, judging from the list of 34 potential genre tracks Idol has posted on iTunes (and listed after the jump), the theme could just as easily be called Tragic Treacle Week. I mean, come on now, how are these cats supposed to sound "current" or "relevant" tackling tracks like "Eye of the Tiger" or "Beauty and the Beast" or that Tina Turner jam with the word "Thunderdome" in it?...

"American Idol" announced during the Top 5 results show that the next theme would be Songs of the Cinema and the mentor would be one Jamie Foxx of "Ray" fame. He was also last year's Rat Pack theme mentor.
We were initially trepidatious about this theme because in the past it has yielded many bad performances of "Against All Odds," but then we remembered Paige Miles' debacle and felt relieved that we wouldn't have to sit through that song again. The worry came back, however, when we saw this week's list of song choices.
"Idol" might as well have called this Cheesy '80s Songs week or Kenny Loggins Songs week. The list is like six songs long and most of them are completely unusable by the Idols for various reasons -- there's nothing to be done but karaoke (most of the list), other Idols have killed them ("Over the Rainbow,...

Jamie Foxx will serve as American Idol’s celebrity mentor next week, as he takes hopefuls through their ’songs of the cinema.’
No, you’re not mistaken, Jamie was on the show last year too….in 2009 he mentored the final five hopefuls for their rat pack themed week. In top 7 week last year the show also ran with the movie songs theme and we find ourselves wishing that Idol bosses would come up with an original idea/theme/mentor….just for once!
The approved list of songs (via iTunes) is a diverse one with four Disney tunes alone. We can see Crystal performing ‘Moon River’ with Lee taking on ‘Kiss From A Rose.’ We’d love to hear your son suggestions, so leave your comments below.
“(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” by Bryan Adams
“(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes...
