Much to the surprise and delight of all the designers on “Making the Cut,” no one was eliminated in season three, episode four, “One Day, One Team.” So all seven contestants returned to design again in episode five, “Festival Wear”: Curtis Cassell, Rafael Chaouiche, Georgia Hardinge, Sienna Li, Jeanette Limas, Markantoine Lynch-Boisvert, and Yannik Zamboni. All sunshine and puppies and roses, right? Unfortunately, the judges’ momentary mercy curdled like milk in the sun. Let’s get into it.

“Festival wear has become big business for fashion retailers,” Tim Gunn explains. “Many large brands are creating year-round festival lines. In fact, for the Millennial and Gen-z demographics it’s becoming tangential to resort wear.” We’re talking hippie Woodstock looks, Afropunk, all those wild desert utopia Burning Man costumes. The sky is kind of the limit with this one.

At one point in the development of “Making the Cut” with Amazon Prime Video, executive producer and host Heidi Klum decided to ask the online retail behemoth if they could have a jet for the show.
Not some dinky Gulfstream, mind you. Like…a jet jet. A real, big jet.
“We were kind of hoping to get a big Amazon plane, because I was already thinking about commercials we can shoot — like Tim [Gunn] and I hopping out of a plane with Amazon boxes, delivering them to people,” Klum said in an interview with IndieWire. “My brain was going 100 miles an hour. A plane would have been nice with sewing machines in there, like ‘Ok, your first assignment is not in New York, it’s in Paris. But guess what?’ You open a plane, they go in there, and there are sewing machines everywhere. You’re not laying back and enjoying the flight,...

Just how hard was it for Heidi Klum and her fellow “Making the Cut” judges, including supermodel Naomi Campbell and designer Nicole Richie, to decide between German designer Esther Perbandt and her black aesthetic and L.A.-based Jonny Cota with his more commercial outfits at the end of the Amazon show’s first season?
“It was until 3 a.m. in the morning kind of hard because we all had our favorites and we all were fighting for who we believed should win,” says the model and Emmy-winning former host of “Project Runway.” “But it really was a super close call and I think everyone would have been happy with Esther winning. Naomi and I were going more for Esther and the other judges were more for Jonny, even though I love Jonny too.”

“Making the Cut” premiered over five weeks from March 27 to April 24. Now that the season is over, what did you think of the competition? And if you haven’t seen it yet, are you planning to binge all 10 hours now that the whole thing is available to view? Either way, you can scroll down for our recaps of each and every episode, every assignment, every elimination, and of course the coronation of the ultimate winner (you can watch that interview at the bottom of this post).
This fashion competition series brought together 12 designers from around the world to vie for a $1 million grand prize and a mentorship with Amazon Fashion. And streaming on the global retailer also gave the show the opportunity to sell each week’s winning looks worldwide after episodes debuted. So this show wasn’t just about the art of design, it was also about the business of retail.

“Standing next to Esther in the very final judgment was the most gut-wrenching moment of my life,” says “Making the Cut” designer Jonny Cota about waiting for the judges’ verdicts with Esther Perbandt at the very end of the first season finale of the Amazon series. “The thing is, I love Esther. I don’t want her to not win, I just want myself to win, so all time stopped and we just waited and waited. It felt like it was the longest decision ever. But wow, it was thrilling.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Cota above.

It all came down to this. Three designers went into the “Making the Cut” finale episode, “The Winner: The Next Global Brand,” but only one could win the $1 million grand prize and a mentorship from Amazon Fashion. So did Sander Bos, Jonny Cota or Esther Perbandt prevail after the judges made their decisions about their pop-up shops, their business plans and their final collections. Read on for our minute-by-minute recap of what happened and perhaps what should have happened when all was said and done.

Amazon’s Making the Cut crowned its first winner on Friday in a two-part finale that brought the remaining designers back to where their season-long journey began.
Jonny Cota, Esther Perbandt and Sander Bos returned to New York City to showcase their final collections in fully realized pop-up shops. While Bos’ candy coated display was a success in its own right, it fell short of expectations, resulting in a third-place finish for the 24-year-old Belgium native.

It was sad to see Sabato Russo go in episode five of “Making the Cut,” “Streetwear,” in which he ignored Tim Gunn‘s advice and paid the price for that decision when the judges deemed his looks too safe and not really streetwear. Winning looks from each episode will also be available for purchase on Amazon in the “Making the Cut” store. Designers whose looks don’t “make the cut” will be eliminated during the course of the season until only one winner remains. Designers will travel to the world’s fashion capitals of New York, Paris, and Tokyo, where they will complete challenges that will test their design skills and business savvy.
