Between 1979 and 1983, 117 violent and gritty social realist pictures were produced in Taiwan, which eventually came to be known as Taiwan Black Movies. One of the most iconic is definitely “The Lady Avenger”, both because it is an exploitation movie directed by a woman, but also because it uses exploitation as a medium in order to make realistic social comments.

After shooting the scene numerous times, she has a fight with the director and leaves the scene, but since she is in the middle of nowhere, she has to hitchhike her way home. A political science-fiction thriller based on the book of the same name, 3 Body Problem offers more than what meets the eye. It is not every day that we will come across something as thought-provoking as this series. The least it is going to do is underscore the meaninglessness of the human condition and what gives rise to misanthropy. But again, it makes me wonder about the distinction between nihilism and misanthropy. I do feel that, as of late, we need more movies and series that challenge our inflated sense of self as human beings. The way we have evolved into beings of colossal destruction, I can’t help but feel the lack of a solution to this endless cycle. As cavemen, we evolved to solve the ‘me vs. you’ problem and successfully built ourselves into a society; however, we never really learned how to adapt to the ‘us vs.

A familiar sub-genre of time travel-movies has characters going into the past to see a loved one who has died. Writer and director Ned Benson gives that idea a musical twist In The Greatest Hits. Harriet (Lucy Boynton) was in the same car crash that killed her boyfriend, Max (David Corenswet), two years before. Now whenever she hears songs they listened to together, she is carried back to the first time they experienced that music. Weighed down with grief, every night she listens to LPs, labeled “Tested” and “Untested,” searching for a way back to a moment she can alter to save Max’s life. Or, as her potential new romance, David (Justin H. Min), tells her, “So you just sit in this room, go back in time and hang out with your dead boyfriend.”
Yes, she does, and it’s an intriguing premise. Benson deftly combines the time travel,...

As one redditor aptly put it, Bowen Yang got “Stefon-ed” Saturday night. And by that they meant that a joke found its way onto the cards that Yang wasn’t expecting–and he could not keep it together.
That it came during a “Lisa From Temecula” sketch was the icing on the cake. You may remember that the Ego Nwodim character made her debut last season in the ten-to-one spot of the Pedro Pascal-hosted episode, and was an immediate fan favorite–in part because Yang and the rest of the players in the sketch broke.
In that case, the cast was thrown off by some unexpectedly strong table shaking. In this case, it was apparently a last-minute line change.
All seemed to be going as planned as Nwodim reprised her “Lisa From Temecula” character for the third time, requisite table-shaking and all. That is, until toward the end of the...

The Try Guys will perform ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ and they’ll let their fans rewrite Shakespeare’s story
The Try Guys have tried everything from spicy noodles to corsets to labor pain. On August 10, the trio will attempt something a little bit different by performing William Shakespeare‘s Romeo and Juliet — with a twist. Instead of sticking to the script, The Try Guys will let their fans reinterpret The Bard’s iconic tragedy.
The one-night performance of Romeo and Juliet will feature Zach Kornfeld as the titular Montague prince, with Keith Habersberger playing his Capulet counterpart. Eugene Lee Yang will show off his versality by portraying many of the play’s other characters, including Mercutio, Paris, Friar Lawrence, and Juliet’s nurse.
Based on those casting choices, we’d expect all three Try Guys to end up dead at the end of the night. (Spoiler alert!) But that may not be how the show plays out. As fans watch the performance through interactive streaming platform Kiswe, they’ll...

The table isn’t shaking but Ego Nwodim does have a steak salad in front of her.
Nwodim has been part of the repertory players on Saturday Night Live since season 46 in 2020, having joined as a featured player in 2018.
She has played Dionne Warwick and Edith Puthie, but over the last year she has broken through in her star turn as Lisa from Temecula, a lawyer whose predilection for overcooked meat has implications for the stability of her dining environment.
When I sit down to lunch with Nwodim, days after what turned out to be the season finale of SNL, which was forced to cancel its final three shows of the season as a result of the writers strike, she’s aware of what she just ordered. “I can see this is pretty well done,” she says. “I’m using my core as to not shake the table.”

If Loot co-creator Alan Yang had his way, Season 2 of the Apple TV+ series would drop tomorrow.
“When the group gels, that’s when you’re having fun. This season, I feel like we hit such a groove, and not only that, we deepen all these relationships,” Yang said Sunday during Deadline’s Contenders TV panel for the show. “I’m so excited for people to watch this next season. I wish it were coming out now because we have some new episodes coming in and it’s the best stuff the show’s done.”
Yang teased some of what’s in store for the upcoming sophomore season: “There’s an episode about Joe’s parents. There’s an episode going into Sofia’s love life and all of these stories become ways for these characters to become richer and richer and richer. That’s not even mentioning the stuff that Molly’s doing,...

Kelvin Yu, who adapted Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel, American Born Chinese, for Disney+, said Yang’s characters belong with the other legends in the Disney pantheon. That includes Disney’s own princess and their Marvel slate.
“I went to Disneyland on Friday with my son,” Yang told Deadline’s Dominic Patton at Contenders TV. “It’s Captain America over here, Ariel over here, Moana. The Monkey King and Guanyin and these characters deserve a place on that shelf.”

Yang’s graphic novel was an adaptation of the classic Chinese story Journey to the West, which has also inspired many films, including a series by Stephen Chow. The Monkey King (Daniel Wu) is a mythical character, comparable to those American legends.

In the cold open for the latest “SNL,” the long-running NBC show basically channels how we’re all feeling when it depicted “the first warm day of the year,” as an event that basically brought out every lunatic in New York.

Saturday Night Live went apolitical for its cold open, instead riffing on the return of warm weather to New York — something that also means the return of all the “freaks, crazies and weirdos” to Central Park.
Taking a break from Trump, Biden and Fox News, SNL instead chose a satire on the most annoying New Yorkers to be found in the park as the temperature rise: The older man doing an aggressive power walk, the perverts with binoculars, the woman learning to rollerblade, the park employees getting high on the job, the lady on her phone loudly trying to explain to someone where she is, the grown man with a drone, and the guy with a clipboard “who wants to know if you have a second for a good cause.” And there is a crazy man with a microphone, along with a woman who “will be debating the nonsense that...

If 2017's “Steel Rain” was an idealistic, rather narrowed down look at the quest for Korean reunification and the forces that may come between that, then its sequel, “Steel Rain 2: Summit” is the broader, more refined version of the same vision. It may be entirely unrelated to its predecessor but it is hard to avoid making comparisons, especially given both share the same ambitious end goal. However, where the latest instalment thrives is in its dedication to acknowledging the rest of the cogs in the cluttered machine that is the strained inter-Korea relations, and the ways that all sides can manipulate each other in the quest for fiscal, and non-fiscal, power and gains.
“Steel Rain 2: Summit” is available from Echelon Studios

Patrick Harrison, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ longtime top official in New York, has been let go by the organization, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The exit of Harrison was communicated to the Academy’s roughly 1,000 Tri-State area members in an email sent last Friday by Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang. The official began his career in 1991 as an assistant to the Academy’s executive administrator and left in 1995 to work on awards campaigns at Miramax. He then returned to the Academy in February 2001, serving as director of New York programs and membership until July 2022, when he was promoted to VP member relations and global outreach.
“Since we met with you in October, there have been some changes in the Tri-State operation,” Kramer and Yang’s missive acknowledged. “As some of you know, Roger [Mancusi, Harrison’s deputy] left the Academy in the fall, and Patrick has been on leave.

Awkwafina may be heading under the sea for “The Little Mermaid” and fighting Dracula in “Renfield” this spring, but at heart, the BAFTA nominee is still Nora from Queens. Season 3 of the star’s Comedy Central series, aptly titled “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens,” will premiere on April 26. The season comes over a year after the show’s sophomore outing ended in October 2021.
Originally premiering in January 2020, “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens” stars the “Farewell” actor as a fictionalized version of herself, in a family drama set in her home neighborhood of Flushing, Queens. Bd Wong stars as her father Wally, Lori Tan Chinn as her grandmother, Bowen Yang as her cousin Edmund, and Jennifer Esposito as Wally’s girlfriend Brenda.

“Fire Island” is about to, uh, catch fire at this year’s Emmys. The telefilm, which aired on Hulu last June, is certain to be nominated for Best TV Movie and could well win that top honor. The flick follows a group of Lgbtqia+ friends who head to Fire Island Pines for their annual trip full of sex, fun, and drugs. But when their usual trip is disrupted, they have to make this final trip their best ever. Joel Kim Booster does double duty as both writer and star of this heartfelt film, which he loosely based on “Pride & Prejudice.” Andrew Ahn directs while Margaret Cho, Matt Rogers, Conrad Ricamora, and “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang all costar.
Booster play Noah, who is out just for fun and frolic until he makes a promise to best friend Howie (Yang) that he won’t have sex again until Howie breaks his dry spell.

Bowen Yang is a three-time Emmy nominee for “Saturday Night Live”: twice in Best Comedy Supporting Actor (2021 and ’22) and once in Best Variety Writing (2019). However, he has yet to claim a golden statue for NBC’s flagship sketch comedy series. That could all change this year, thanks in part to his recurring performance as controversial New York Representative George Santos.
Yang first donned Santos’ trademark black-rimmed glasses and dark suit-and-sweater-vest combo during the January 21 episode hosted by Aubrey Plaza. “A cinematographer is a visual psychiatrist–moving an audience through a movie […] making them think the way you want them to think, painting pictures in the dark,” said the late, great Gordon Willis. As we continue our year-end coverage, one aspect we must highlight is, indeed, cinematography. From talented newcomers to seasoned professionals, we’ve rounded up the examples that have most impressed us this year.
Aftersun (Gregory Oke)
It’s been seven months since I unassumingly saw Aftersun at an unspeakable morning hour in the Director’s Fortnight sidebar at Cannes, and I haven’t stopped thinking about that polaroid shot. Just after a photo is taken, the camera cuts to a long, still take of the polaroid image slowly apparating. It’s the shot I’ve thought about most this year (and not just because it’s clever). In narrative context it delivers a heavyweight moment. But in...

We're nearing the end of 2022, and with just a couple more episodes to go before 2023, we're through roughly one-third of the 48th season of "Saturday Night Live." While many are undoubtedly anticipated the co-hosting duo of Steve Martin and Martin Short next weekend, "Nope" star Keke Palmer just set a new bar by hosting the best episode of the season so far. Much like cast member Kenan Thompson, the comedic chops of Keke Palmer were honed on Nickelodeon in her younger years, following her breakthrough performance in "Akeelah and the Bee." So it should come as no surprise that Palmer felt perfectly at home in host hosting debut on "SNL," and I feel like we could be looking at a potential new inductee into the Five-Timers Club as her career continues to blossom.
Alright, let's dig into Keke Palmer's episode of "Saturday Night Live."

The first time Kimmel fronted the telecast, he managed one of the most bizarre incidents in Oscar history, “Envelopegate,” and while newly installed president Janet Yang didn’t mention that debacle, she did praise Kimmel for his abilities in navigating live TV.
“We felt like we needed someone who could definitely handle the show,” Yang told THR at the Nov. 16 Academy Women’s Luncheon. “We’ve experimented with a couple of other ways of approaching it — having no hosts, having multiple hosts — but we felt Jimmy was the perfect person to ground the show this year.”

Ahead of the premiere of Saturday Night Live season 48, the late night comedy show lost eight of its castmembers, the biggest cast overhaul in a generation.
At the end of season 47 in May, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney and Pete Davidson signed off of the sketch series for the last time. Their departures were followed by Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor and Aristotle Athari in the summer and, finally, Chris Redd in September.
A few weeks before season 48 premiered in October, SNL shored up its ensemble with four new castmembers, who would join the show as featured players for the 2022-23 season: Marcello Hernandez, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker.
According to standout Bowen Yang, having the new castmembers around has been “so seamless.”

Standing beside Sza and Keke Palmer is enough to overwhelm anyone, but especially Saturday Night Live’s Bowen Yang. In the latest promo clip for the Dec. 3 episode hosted by first-timer Palmer with Sza returning for her second stint as musical guest, the comedian even manages to forget his own name.
Yang introduces himself first as Brown Yang, then Bowen Yung, then Brown Yung – moving further and further away from his actual name. An increasingly concerned Sza watches, bemused, as Yang goes on to identify himself as Cohen Yang and Andy Cohen.

Since a couple of years, it has stopped being unusual to have horror movies in the competition sections of A-list festivals. And although the time of highbrow classification of films according to their genre is luckily behind us, now it’s the matter of finding the balance in quality of the ones and the others. Not counting some excellent decisions, it seems like the programmers and curators of the red carpet festivals haven’t seen that many genre films in their lives.
For a horror film lover, watching Kim Jin-young’s “The Other Child” in Tallinn Black Nights’ First Feature Competition feels like a chain of déjà-vus. An adopted child arrives, strange things start happening, is it the child or someone else… So, we need to talk about Isaac (Song Ha-huyn). The Try Guys are going live.
In their first event following the ousting of Ned Fulmer, the now-trio Keith Habersberger, Zach Kornfeld, and Eugene Lee Yang will cap off this season of culinary chaos series Try Guys Without a Recipe in a live cook-off.
Habersberger, Kornfeld, and Yang will go head-to-head Dec. 17 to see who can make the best churro with no recipe—just a chef’s demonstration to model after. Unlike previous Without a Recipe competitions, which had winners declared by panels of judges, this one will crown its champion based on real-time votes from live viewers.
Those viewers will pay between 19.99 for a basic ticket and 49.99 for a “VIP bundle” with access to a post-show stream and a limited-edition T-shirt. The whole production is being broadcast by Kiswe, a New Jersey-based interactive video company founded in 2013.
The Try Guys have done live in-person events before, but this is their debut live digital broadcast.

In October, “Saturday Night Live” aired a sketch lampooning the recent drama surrounding video content quartet the Try Guys, best known for the wholesome image they cultivated working at BuzzFeed. Weeks before, one of the quartet’s members, Ned Fulmer, was removed from the company after his extramarital affair with an employee came to light, causing a stir on social media among fans of the group. The “SNL” sketch parodied the intense reaction that the news caused, with Brendan Gleeson playing a CNN reporter who devotes airtime to explaining the scandal.
In a recent Hollywood Reporter interview, the three remaining Try Guys — Keith Habersberger, Eugene Lee Yang, and Zach Kornfeld — responded to the sketch, calling the experience of being parodied on the comedy series surreal.
“Well, obviously being parodied on ‘SNL’ was something we didn’t really ever anticipate out of our careers,” Habersberger said. “We never thought we were...

The fall of 2022 was a trying one for the Try Guys.
That’s when the Fab Four of digital content suddenly found themselves at the center of a maelstrom of bad publicity. It all began after it came to light that one of them — Ned Fulmer, 35, who billed himself as the happily married “wife guy” of the group — had been carrying on an inappropriate relationship with an employee who starred on their spinoff series, Food Babies.
The other three — Keith Habersberger, 35, Zach Kornfeld, 32, and Eugene Lee Yang, 36 — took swift and decisive action against Fulmer, first with a Sept. 27 Instagram post announcing he was “no longer working” with them; then with an Oct. 3 video posted to their YouTube channel (which boasts over 8 million subscribers) explaining “what happened,” later parodied on Saturday Night Live.

The Korean War has been a fertile ground for epic war features over the past few decades. Predominantly these have emerged from South Korea where the war is part of the national subconscious. Chinese cinema had tended to focus more on the impact of World War 2 and its aftermath until the release of “The Battle at Lake Changjin” in 2021. A huge success at the box office and another in the current trend of “Melody” blockbusters that incorporate patriotic themes in amongst the entertainment. With the endeavor requiring three directors, it comes as no surprise that the sequel was shot back-to-back to make the most of the production costs.

The skit skewered a recent video the guys - Eugene Lee Yang, Zach Kornfeld, and Keith Habersberger - released explaining their decision to fire their fourth member, Ned Fulmer, after it was revealed that he had a workplace affair. While the sketch makes light of the trio's response to their friend and coworker's infidelity, Twitter users are calling out the NBC series for taking aim at the remaining Try Guys rather than Fulmer. (Popsugar reached out to the Try Guys' representatives for comment on the sketch but did not receive an immediate response.)
In the skit, Bowen Yang, Mikey Day, and Andrew Dismukes play Yang, Kornfeld, and Habersberger, who appear in a breaking-news segment on CNN hosted by Gleeson, who appears as a reporter well-versed in the drama.

When SNL spoofed the Try Guys cheating scandal, the real punchline was the media for covering such a dumb story at all in light of everything else in the world (see: the SNL Cold Open.)
The segment opened with Ego Nwodim as a CNN anchor speaking to White House correspondent Colin O’Doherty (Brendan Gleeson). Gleeson leans into his earpiece as if he’s about to deliver breaking news and he does — but it’s not the kind Nwodim expects. O’Doherty keeps talking about the “Ned Fulmer Situation,” referencing...

Saturday Night Live held nothing back in this week’s (8 October) cold open.
In the gameshow-set sketch, SNL cast member Bowen Yang skewered Elon Musk, Kanye West, Joe Biden, and even Chris Pratt in the space of a few minutes.
The pretend host of a gameshow called So You Think You Won’t Snap, Yang attempted to get “contestants” to “snap” simply by reading out facts gleaned from recent news stories.
First up was Biden, who was mostly roasted for being 79-years-old. “Did you know that when Joe Biden was born we didn’t have highways?” Bowen asked.
For Chris Pratt, it was the trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie that left him vulnerable. Pratt stars as Mario the Italian plumber in the upcoming film, though it’s hard to tell from the recently released clip. “He’s supposed to be Italian! That’s like his whole thing!” Chloe Fineman...

“Saturday Night Live” parodied the intense social media reaction to the drama surrounding popular online comedy group the Try Guys with a sketch that featured parodies of the group’s remaining three members.
Episode host Brendan Gleeson, who was on the show to promote his upcoming film “The Banshees of Inisherin,” starred in the sketch as a CNN White House correspondent reporting on important developments in America’s relations with Russia. But — much to the befuddlement of anchor Ego Nwodim — Gleeson interrupts the report to announce that the Try Guys have responded to the controversy surrounding Ned Fulmer, who was fired from the group after admitting to a “consensual workplace relationship” with a producer of the group’s online video series.
“It’s obviously an evolving story, but CNN can confirm that the Try Guys have released an official Youtube video clapping back at ex-Try Guy Ned Fulmer, the wife guy-Try Guy,...

Buzzfeed’s The Try Guys — the men who make videos of themselves trying just about anything — became a target of Saturday Night Live tonight when their latest cheating scandal was spoofed on the late-night show.
The piece began with Ego Nwodim playing a CNN anchor who tosses it to field reporter Colin O’Doherty (Brendan Gleeson). He’s supposed to be reporting on the White House, but keeps getting interrupted by breaking news regarding The Try Guys and the “Ned Fulmer Situation” — a reference to the real-life scandal that broke up the group after Fulmer supposedly cheated on his wife with a Try Guys staffer.
Laura doesn’t know these guys. Naturally, Colin is aghast. “How do you not know The Try Guys?” he asks. “These are the Buzzfeed pranksters who try stuff, like trying fingernail polish, or weird hair cuts. They even tried eating bugs.”
