Surprisingly funny.. first two episodes... then - UPDATED review
24 January 2020 | by MovieCriticOnlineSee all my reviews

I will preface my review by saying that it is an acquired sense of humor, but one I find hilarious, especially the lead, Awkwafina.

The show is up to my alley with the random scenes and characters with out there situations.

Awkwafina plays a slacker living at home with her dad and grandma with the latter being hilariously cast. The dad seems maybe as the only miscast actor. And yes, some of the characters are obviously over the top, but Awkwafina somehow pulls off what I normally would be annoyed with because of her sense of humor and delivery. I like the mix of "I don't give a crap" and New York street attitude coming from her.

The first two episodes were funny. Let's see where it goes.

Worth giving a try and I am a super harsh critic.

UPDATE: I am on Episode 5 now and the energy from the first two is gone. It seems more forced also, which makes the humor fall flat. The writing also seems to suffer. I think they ran out of good ideas. It felt rushed, but at the same time a bit slow if that makes sense. Whatever worked in the first two episodes is vanished is the recent episodes. The last episode spent too much on the father, which isn't a compelling character. It's getting worse by the episode, which is not a good sign.

Let's see what happens next, but NOT going in the right direction, which is a shame with so few good sitcoms these days.
