The two Atlanta rappers in Earthgang know their music has a tendency to cover a lot of ground. The duo, comprised of Olu (a.k.a. Johnny Venus) and WowGr8 (born Eian Parker), have spent the past few years reinventing Southern rap at a pace as dizzying as it’s been dazzling. For their second major-label album, Ghetto Gods, they decided to give listeners a road map. It started with shooting a sequence of five music videos to get across the sounds and themes on the project. “We’re so creative,...

Mereba contends with war on Azeb, the latest EP from the Spillage Village singer whose sound blends R&b, rap, and folk. The battles she describes could be anything: struggles for peace, for resources, for survival. On “News Come,” a standout on the project, she sounds ready to fight for all three. The hopeful anthem is crafted around the leisurely guitars of Mereba and Sam Hoffman, and made even brighter with electric and acoustic cello. Mereba calmly sings about the urgency of freedom, as if its arrival is imminent and she need not worry.

As if the overwhelming fan reaction wasn’t proof enough that Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour was headed for a massive first week on the charts, the album topped the Apple Music Pre-Add Chart during the week leading up to its release.
Sour saw more Pre-Adds than any other album from May 14th through May 20th. Pre-adds allow listeners to queue up an album to be added to their library when it’s released, offering a good indication of the albums that fans are most excited for. It’s a good...

(For much more on how that album came to be,...

Many people have found themselves back in their hometowns this year, grappling with a rapidly changing, unpredictable world from environs they’ve known all their lives. For Spillage Village — the musical collective consisting of chameleonic duo Earthgang; nimble rhymer J.I.D; soulful singer Mereba; producers Hollywood Jb and Benji; charismatic rapper Jurdan Bryant; and alt-r&b superstar 6lack — that meant heading to Atlanta, where the group formed and most of its members are from.

“Queen & Slim,” the film, traffics in sudden tragedy and symbolic terror as it portrays the violence of self-defense and self-awareness in stark, painful terms. It deserves an equally audacious score and soundtrack, a job that has gone to another Devonté Hynes, the British singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer and director in his guise of Blood Orange.
Hynes has been known for his other musical projects, the punky Test Icicles and the dreamy Lightspeed Champion. But as Blood Orange, Hynes has found himself at the axis of abstract soul and ambient electronic pop with a lyrical edge that is as deeply emotional as it is bracingly inventive. Plus, in the last several years, Orange has been in the pink of top-tier production and writing assignments for the likes of Mariah Carey, Solange, Mac Miller, Fka Twigs, Haim, Florence and the Machine, Carly Rae Jepsen, Kylie Minogue and Blondie. He’s...

Vince Staples teams with 6Lack and R&b singer Mereba on his nostalgic new song “Yo Love,” which appears on the soundtrack to film drama Queen & Slim.
Staples and 6Lack trade verses on the cut, reflecting on the joys and fears of early relationships over a jazzy guitar sequence. “I been beaten black and blue/Story of my life, tell me something’ about you,” Staples rhymes. “Where you from? Did you stay or did you run?/You ever thought about a daughter or a son?”
